Premise[]
Mystery Inc. visits a town with a legend of a monster called Big Red, but when they catch the monster, the townspeople seemingly do not want the culprit caught.
Synopsis[]
Mystery Inc. gets lost while driving in the fog, but reach their vacation destination, Monsterville, a fishing town known for its lobster demon, Big Red, who had been terrorizing the town since 1955. Upon reaching the town, they meet a group of skateboarders who call the town the "dullest place in the Northern Hemisphere" and the town manager, Burt Eastman, who confirms the town is haunted. They also meet the town's oldest citizen, Hester Scarlett, who claims Big Red appears every day by the docks.
Mystery Inc. visits the docks where they see the townspeople try to fight Big Red as it climbs onto the docks. They scare it away, but Mystery Inc. is unconvinced of the costume. As it exits, Big Red's costume gets caught in the ladder, so Mystery Inc. unmasks it, revealing Hester Scarlett. However, the townspeople pretend not to see as Scarlett escapes.
Mystery Inc. looks for clues to investigate why the townspeople ignored the monster's unmasking. As they search town, the townspeople, recognizing the threat Mystery Inc. poses to their plot, try to scare them away, but are caught every time. Eventually, Mystery Inc. discovering their plot, interrupts them at a town meeting.
They deduce the town had been using the legend of Big Red to attract tourists, relying on tourism as the water became contaminated, making fishing no longer viable. In 1955, the town asked Scarlett to design the costume and pose as Big Red, then renamed themselves from Mackerelville to Monsterville. Admiring the scheme, Mystery Inc. assisted the skateboarders in creating a scarier, more convincing costume, scaring a group of tourists as they arrive in town.
