- This article is about the What's New, Scooby-Doo? incarnation. For the LEGO Scooby-Doo! Haunted Hollywood incarnation, see Verona Dempsey (LEGO).
Verona Dempsey was a tailor and amateur sleuth. She was a rival to Velma Dinkley, wearing clothes in inverse colors. Verona had the same initials "V.D." and her own catchphrase, Jinkers (a parallel to Velma's Jinkies). However, she posed as the ghost of a lighthouse keeper, being responsible for the crime she appeared to investigate.
Appearance[]
Dempsey is a young woman with chin-length blonde hair, a pale complexion, frameless rectangular glasses, and cherry-pink lipstick. Her clothes have the same color scheme as Velma, only inverted — a red, short-sleeved turtleneck sweater, an orange waistcoat, an orange, short-pleated skirt, long red socks, and orange sneakers.
Personality[]
Dempsey initially appeared to be a competent investigator with uncanny observation and deduction, using advanced technology to search crime scenes and find evidence. She began a rivalry with Velma as they competed to catch the culprit first, though she still remained relatively cordial. As such, she spoke to Velma in a level-headed but patronizing way while charming the other members of Mystery Inc. and giving Daphne long underwear. Velma developed a bitter inferiority complex towards her and began to resent her, motivating her to investigate the crime so she could prove herself to be better than Dempsey.
Though appearing to investigate the Creepy Keeper, she herself was later revealed to be the perpetrator. As she sank various ships to sabotage competing business, she was an aggressive economic competitor who used illegal and unethical means to promote her own business. Her actions devastated a town in Wisconsin, causing several businesses to close.
After being caught, Velma proved that the people Dempsey suspected were mere storm chasers. She declared herself victorious over Dempsey by discovering this before she did.
History[]
What's New, Scooby-Doo?[]
Season three[]
Dempsey disguised herself as the ghost of a lighthouse keeper to use a lighthouse by Lake Michigan, turning out the lighthouse during storms to cause cargo ships to crash. The disguise was based on an unnamed lighthouse keeper that intentionally sank the Dauntless to scavenge its wreck. The owner of a tailor shop, she only allowed her own imported materials to enter the port while other local businesses were devastated due to the loss of imports. While she attacked, she pretended to investigate her own crime, meeting Mystery Inc. and casting suspicion on a group of storm chasers. She developed a rivalry with Velma as they competed to be the first to capture the culprit. However, she remained cordial with the other members of Mystery Inc., giving Daphne high-quality long underwear that would later save her life.
Mystery Inc. and Dempsey both appeared at Crusty McPete's boat rental to investigate. Later, after Mystery Inc. discovered the Dauntless as a ghost ship operated by a skeleton crew, Dempsey prepared a net trap to capture the perpetrator, Crusty McPete. After McPete was handed to authorities, Mystery Inc. assumed that he was also responsible for the Creepy Keeper. However, Velma later realized that he never admitted to the crime, while noting that Dempsey was somehow able to import fabrics despite the Creepy Keeper. With this, Mystery Inc. returned to the lighthouse, confronted and captured the monster, and exposed Dempsey as the culprit. Dempsey was subsequently handed over to the authorities.
