Velma Makes A List is the fourth episode of the first season of Velma.
Premise[]
A third murder reveals a pattern - the victims are all hot girls. Crystal Cove only has the money to allocate police protection to the five hottest girls, and Velma gets the job of making the list. Of course, the Mayor and Sheriff then realize it's cheaper to get Velma to teach the hot girls how "not-to-be-hot".
Synopsis[]
As Velma talks about her pride in never fitting in, the town decide to have a two-week murder-free celebration. Unfortunately, the social hierarchy remains the same, with the haves remaining at the top, and the have nots like Velma remaining at the bottom. The celebratory mood quickly goes goes sour, when someone subsequently reveals that another body was found with their brain removed.
At the town hall, the Mayor goes onto inform the townsfolks that Fred will be exonerated as he was in prison when the third murder occurred. Mr. Jones however looks upset as he had turned Fred’s room into a skating rink.
Since the Mayor knows that the real murderer was still on the loose, and the authorities also knew that they can’t protect every single student. Hence, they developed the HOPE (Hotties Only, Pukefaces Excluded) initiative. Which states that they would rank the five hottest girls and give them a security guard. Velma is furious, but in the end winds up getting tasked with creating the list and dealing with the potential candidates doing everything possible to be on it.
Thus, desperation takes center stage, from plastering pictures on corridors to pole dancing on football goalposts, the girls vying to be on that list will stop at nothing.
Norville offers to help and then suggests Fred as an option to create that particular list.
Fred Jones subsequently receives a the book Feminine Mystique, but he naively confuses it with the X-Men’s Mystique character.
Daphne is then placed under house arrest for safety reasons, and Norville visits her. Someone throws a rock-like object through Daphne’s window. Eventually, Daphne vaguely recalls herself as a baby, being abandoned at the place where the Geode’s came from, which turns out to be the Crystal Cove Mines.
Meanwhile, Velma takes her list to the Mayor, who suggested she teach girls not to be hot. She agrees as it would see them break free from the shackles of the male gaze.
The hot girls visit Velma’s house for “Uggo lessons”. Eventually, the girls end up going to school completely unrecognizable. However, when Velma presents their new looks to the Mayor, they are back to square one. The girls refuse to be transformed, as they believed definitions of womanhood could be different. When pressed, one of the girls even goes as far as to say that Velma’s own definitions of womanhood and beauty, are just as restrictive if not more the effort they go through to look attractive. Thus, as a group they decide that none of them will be changing themselves.
Norville and Daphne end up at the Crystal Cove mines, and Norville admits he tried to make himself into Daphne to get Velma to like him. Daphne however tells him that there is someone apart from Velma out there for him. Eventually, Norville grows more scared, and tells Daphne that he refuses to enter it, so he is going home. He then tells her that if wants a lift back, she should follow him.
Unbeknownst to them, that as Norville and Daphne drive off, a mystery man is on the other side of a vent. He gripps the grills and laughs smugly.
Elsewhere, Velma’s stepmother’s water breaks, and Velma tries to get help, but everyone around her just stands around with their phones and captures the incident unfolding instead.
Later, Fred shows up at the Dinkley house and presents a bouquet to Velma. He said it was because the mystique book opened his eyes to inner beauty. However, Velma rebuffs Fred and tells him that she now finds him gross.
