Velma is the first episode of the first season of Velma.

Premise[]

Velma has horrific hallucinations every time she tries to solve a mystery, a result of her mother suddenly disappearing. However, when her schoolmates start being murdered, and she is one of the main suspects, Velma realizes that it is up to her to solve the case.

Synopsis[]

We see Velma's messy bedroom as she says that this is her origin story, and how she assembled the "greatest team of spooky mystery solvers ever."

The bell rings at Crystal Cove High. In the locker room the girls are showering and discussing that pilot shows of TV series have more gratuitous sex and nudity than the rest of the series. A fight breaks out between Daphne and Krista over the discussion when a figure appears out of the steam, carrying a crowbar. The figure breaks up the fight by hitting Daphne, then asks her how she feels about race-bllnd casting. The figure is revealed to be Velma who opens her locker where Brenda is apparently hiding. Brenda collapses on the floor and everyone sees that she is dead and her brain has been removed.

At the Crystal Cove Police Station Velma is handcuffed to the table in an interview room. An unseen person with a withered hand grabs her shoulder, asking "Who killed Brenda?" As Velma mutters "You're not real" over and over, Donna and Linda Blake enter the room and ask her, "Who's not real, sweetie?" The three engage in small talk and Velma states it's been two years since she visited Daphne's home - which was around the time her mother disappeared. Velma is disdainful of the Blakes' crime solving abilities and gets up to leave, but she is told, at gunpoint, to sit back down as she is a suspect in Brenda's murder. Brenda's body was found in her locker, and Velma states that she was only lurking around because she wanted to shower alone - without Daphne and her fake friends. She then says "I could kill them all!" Donna tells her that they know she couldn't kill Brenda, but they know they need Velma's help to find the real killer. Velma muses that that's a mystery and she doesn't solve mysteries anymore. They give Velma 24 hours before they arrest her.

Velma leaves the station and bumps into Fred, who is just entering. Fred doesn't remember his schoolmate because he claims to have an illness - not being able to recognize people who aren't hot. Daphne arrives and tells him Brenda is dead. Fred is devastated - as Brenda was his backup plan in case Daphne became too clingy. Velma tells them she didn't kill Brenda, but the withered hand grabs her and a voice asks "And how are you going to prove that, Velma? You don't solve mysteries anymore." Again Velma chants "You're not real", which makes Fred ask, "Who is this weirdo?"

At Velma's house her father is making dinner and discusses Velma's predicament with her. Velma believes people think she did it because she was voted "most revengy" in the school yearbook - as a result of which she has plans for them. Aman thinks it's simply because she's a weirdo and doesn't hang out at Spooner's Malt Shop like normal kids. Velma notes maybe she would if he hadn't got a waitress there pregnant. The waitress, Sophie, is in the room with them and states she is also the owner of Spooner's and that people think Velma is a murderer because she is a creepy loser. As Aman takes photos of a naked and obviously pregnant Sophie, with a new camera, she says that will change when Velma becomes a glamorous waitress at Spooner's.

At Spooner's a memorial service is being held for Brenda. Daphne says how much better a best friend Brenda was compared to Velma, who is serving food to Linda and Donna. Daphne discloses to all that Velma is the main suspect, holding up the police file. Linda is shocked, saying that information was private. Velma drops the ketchup on their table and to their annoyance walks off eating the Blakes' fries.

Her shift over, Velma walks into the alley behind Spooner's and throws her uniform in the dumpster. She notices someone is there and discovers Fred, who bumps into her, knocking her glasses off. Fred says he is trying to be the man his father wants him to be, but he's been crying ever since Brenda died. His childhood memories cause Velma to remember the first mystery she ever solved - her mother smoking cigarettes. Velma finishes her recollections with the last time she ever saw her. Her mother's car was found with only her glasses and Velma's present inside. She put on her mother's glasses and vowed not to open the present until she found her. However, the guilt that her mother went out because of her resulted in Velma's scary hallucinations. And those hallucinations always return any time she tries to solve any mystery.

A car appears in the alley, headlights blazing. Fred runs away as the car approaches. It stops in front of Velma and Norville gets out, relieved to have found her. She hadn't responded to his voicemails. He had sent Brenda to Spooner's to discover why it was so popular, suspecting it was drugs, and gave her his camera. Norville is certain she was murdered to prevent suspicious photos from getting out. Velma recalls Sophie's new camera and Norville theorizes she took it from Brenda after killing her.

Back at Velma's house, Aman and Sophie are asleep, and Velma is shocked by the photos she sees on the camera - pictures of babies dressed up as vegetables. Aman wakes up and explains that those photos paid for the camera. Clearly this isn't Norville's camera, but solving that triggers her hallucinations. Sophie wakes up and revives her and explains the secret to Spooner's popularity. She lets teens have sex in the bathrooms. Aman tells Velma that Diya left them, but Velma refuses to believe it, because that means she didn't love them. This, though, leads Velma to recall the bad things she did, including destroying her mother's left eye with a water jet, drawing all over the manuscript of her novel, "The Stabbening", getting drunk on her mother's "inspiration juice" and breaking her laptop. Suddenly Velma reaches an epiphany - her mother left because she hated them and she needs to stop feeling guilty and move on. She puts her mother's unopened present in the dumpster

The next morning, Velma turns up at school a changed woman - literally. Fred supports her by telling everyone that she is not capable of murder, however Daphne is unimpressed. Later, in the girls bathroom, Velma is taking off her makeup when the lights go out. When they come back on she is surrounded by Daphne and the cool girls. Daphne says if Velma wants Fred she can have him. A discussion about Fred ensues, including how he doesn't let anyone has see him naked.

The discussion triggers a revelation and Velma tells Norville to drive her to Fred's house. Velma thinks Fred killed Brenda because she photographed him in the bathroom at Spooner's. She breaks into the house but her hallucinations return when Norville rings her. Norville brings her back by telling her he "like likes" her. Velma then finds Norville's camera, which includes a photo of Fred, who enters the room. He explains that he hasn't gone through puberty yet. That is why he needed the photo, and did the unthinkable to Brenda, and will now do the same to Velma... As he walks towards Velma two shots ring out, hitting him in both legs. It's the Blakes. They are happy Fred is the culprit, but he tries to explain he meant paying her to keep quiet, not killing her.

Norville drives Velma back to her house, and once there, she takes her mother's present back out of the trash. Velma tells him that she still needs to solve Diya's disappearance, but then they both notice cockroaches swarming at her other dumpster. Norville opens it revealing Krista's dead body and her brain has also been removed.

Quotes[]

Krista: (Daphne and friends are discussing sex and nudity on TV while naked in the shower) Oh, I actually kinda love it. Sex sells, and in today's overcrowded market you need a hook.
Daphne: Um, the only hook a good show ever needs is good storytelling.
Krista: Then why was your favorite part of the Riverdale pilot when Betty and Veronica kiss?
Daphne: Well, because it was instantly called out as tired in the scene.
Krista: No, it's because it was hot!
Daphne: You can have it both ways.
Krista: No you can't. Just admit, we are all secretly perverts!
