Uncle Scooby and Antarctica is the twelfth episode of the second season of What's New, Scooby-Doo?, and the twenty-sixth overall.
Premise[]
While trying to bring a penguin named Little Pete back to Antarctica, the gang stumbles upon a fish creature that has imprisoned the man who could locate the penguins under the ice.
Synopsis[]
At the Cape Dart Way Station in Antarctica, a fish creature attacks the scientists there, throwing Dr. Armand Zola into the icy water. Meanwhile, Mystery Inc. visits Shaggy volunteering at his local zoo. Scooby has befriended a penguin named Little Pete, but the zookeeper, Zelig, plans to return it to its natural habitat in Antarctica. He invites Mystery Inc. to accompany the penguin there, and Captain Corvina Cloyd flies them there, but upon arriving at the Cape Dart Way Station, they find it mostly deserted with the power off. The only remaining witness, Zola's assistant Monroe Hopper, explains that a fish creature attacked the station abducted Dr. Zola. The power is restored by Sergeant Linda Rauch, an engineer assigned to the station.
Mystery Inc. investigates the ice field outside the station with Cloyd, but find no penguins. Cloyd believes that the construction of the research station has displaced the local penguin population. While Cloyd leaves to prepare the airplane for takeoff, Mystery Inc. searches further, only to encounter the fish creature. The creature attempts to abduct Fred, but the other members of Mystery Inc. rescue him, with Little Pete warding the monster away by making it fall into the water.
While searching further, they find Dr. Zola frozen in a block of ice. They return to Cape Dart Way Station to thaw him with blow dryers, where they learn from Cloyd they cannot leave the continent for another two days due to a hailstorm. Suddenly, the power is shut off again, rendering them unable to thaw Zola. As they go outside to investigate, they are attacked by the fish creature again, and Scooby falls into the water, dragged deeper underwater by currents. However, Little Pete rescues him, keeping him away from the fish creature. On the way up, Scooby grabs a short rubber tube from the creature.
Back at the station with the power restored, Cloyd laments the ice being broken by the fish creature, desiring to depart as soon as possible. Rauch also expresses her desires to leave to Maui, escaping the Antarctic climate. Mystery Inc. prepares a trap to capture the fish creature, with Shaggy and Scooby posing as octopuses above a hole in the ice to lure the monster into appearing. This trap only attracts a seal, and the real monster appears behind them. After a prolonged chase, Mystery Inc. finally lures the monster into a cage which is then closed and lifted above the ground in a crane.
The fish creature is revealed to be Hopper. Back at the station, Hopper explains that Zola masterminded the act, having himself frozen in ice to preserve his body. Zola intended to awaken in the next century so he could share his knowledge in the distant future. He ordered Hopper to pose as a fish creature to scare the other scientists away while Hopper carried out this operation. Velma reveals that the rubber hose was part of a scuba suit Hopper used to swim deep underwater.
Suddenly, Zola awakens, having been fully thawed, though he is disappointed that he was awakened after just three days in the ice. However, he scraps his plan, turning to cloning instead of self-preservation. With Zola's help, Mystery Inc. locates the penguins and returns Little Pete to his habitat. As they prepare to depart, Rauch reveals that she has been transferred to Maui, leaving with Mystery Inc. on Cloyd's airplane. Finally, Cloyd expresses her desires to return to Antarctica to protect the ice sheet.

Notes/trivia[]
- The episode title is a play on the titles "uncle and aunt" so it sounds like "Uncle Scooby and Aunt Arctica".
- "Uncle Scooby" was also an affectionate nickname, his nephew, Scrappy-Doo, called him.
- The Mystery Machine does not appear.
- In closed captioning, Zelig is called "Zella".
Miscellaneous[]
- Disguises: Shaggy and Scooby as octupuses; Mystery Inc. and Little Pete as snowmen.
- Traps: Shaggy and Scooby lure the monster into appearing, then Mystery Inc. traps it in a net attached to a crane.
- Clues: An air hose.
Cultural references[]
- Fred quotes the title of John W. Campbell's 1938 story Who Goes There. which is about an Antarctic monster. It was the basis for the films The Thing from Another World (1951), The Thing (1982), and The Thing (2011). The 1951 version altered the setting to the Arctic Circle.
- Armand Zola is a likely reference to the Marvel Comics villain Arnim Zola, who transfers his mind between robotic bodies to avoid death.
Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]
- In one scene, the fur on Daphne's hood is white instead of purple.
Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]
- Fred kicks the monster back into the hole it came from, but the monster is shown to be by the coast line in the next scene.
- The hole the monster makes changes shapes. First, it is round, then it is a square, then it is an odd-shaped hole, then it is round again.
- When the monster appears during the trap sequence, Shaggy and Scooby Doo are wearing squid costumes. However, when they are dropped onto the snowmobile, they are not wearing them anymore.
- Captain Cloyd states that the sun will not rise until July, but this is incorrect. Antarctica is located in the southern hemisphere where July is midwinter, meaning that there should be no sun at that time.
