- Tug is voiced by a young Scott Menville who had previously made his acting debut as the voice of Wilbur in the Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo episode Snow Job Too Small. He subsequently went on to voice Red Herring in A Pup Named Scooby-Doo and Shaggy Rogers in Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue!
- Tug slightly resembles Popeye's son Junior from Hanna-Barbera's Popeye and Son as he has short blond hair, a round face, and is of a tall, lanky stature.
- Some of his and the other cadets' inventions and mishaps are reminiscent of Ernest Goes to Camp.
- Like many aspects of this film, his name is a play on words. Roper is a famous last name and footwear brand, but it also implies that he's a leader who commands respect from the other cadets through his competency.
