There's No Creature Like Snow Creature is the first episode of the first season of What's New, Scooby-Doo?

Premise[]

The gang travels to a mountain resort for some skiing and to watch a snowboarding competition. They end up investigating rumors of a snow creature that is attacking the participants. When Velma catches a cold and Fred breaks his leg, it is up to Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby to solve the mystery.

Synopsis[]

When snowboarding athlete Chris Klug decides to take a last run down the slopes at a mountain resort, he is attacked by a snow creature. While he managed to escape the creature's grasp, he ran into a tree and was injured.

Scooby and the gang arrive at the mountain resort where the Wilkinson Snowboarding Open is being held. There they learn that Chris Klug was recently injured under mysterious circumstances.

They ask Chris himself, who told them about his encounter with the creature. Afterwards, they met Avalanche Anderson, who used to make snowboard movies and is one of Fred's childhood heroes.

Later that night, they overheard Nancy Chang the news reporter, who's talking on the phone. She seems desperate for more ratings, but has a hard time on the phone because of bad reception. They next spotted a mysterious man, heading for an abandoned ski jump, and decided to follow him.

They come face-to-face with the creature while investigating. Fred breaks his leg trying leading the monster away from his friend.

Fortunately, the trail manager Theodore Shushman, found him, and brings him back to the lodge.

While Fred is bedridden, the remaining gang members continue to investigate. They decided to check out Theodore's cabin, and learned that was a ski champion, until he collided with a snowboarder. They found Avalanche in the snow, claiming that he was attacked by the creature, and broke his leg.

With the creature's interest in professional snowboarders, Shaggy was entered into the contest as a decoy. In the meantime, Velma caught a cold. This left Daphne to go on her own to find clues in an abandoned ski jump, and found a strange device inside. Before she could figure out what it is, the creature attacks her again.

After she returns to the lodge, Fred devises a strategy to capture the creature by using Shaggy and Scooby-Doo as bait. This leads to a chase where the duo and the creature end up flying off the ski jump. The creature disintegrates upon impact at the bottom. Further investigation reveals that the creature was entirely constructed from transparent lucite, including its moving components which explains why Daphne could not melt it with her blow dyer. It was also being manipulated by a hidden individual positioned at the top of the ski jump. Just before this person could run away, an avalanche triggered by Velma’s sneeze brings him down to confront the gang.

The mastermind behind the creature is revealed to be Avalanche Anderson. Drawing on his special effects expertise and virtual reality technology, Anderson created and controlled the monster. While Shaggy remembered seeing Anderson hurt by his own creation, Velma clarified that they had actually found him hindered in the snow. Anderson explains that he had been attacked and was poised for a miraculous recovery. When questioned about his motives, Anderson admits that he had once been a top-tier snowboarder and pursued to reclaim that former glory. His scheme was to get rid of his rivals and recover his status as a professional snowboarder. However, Fred points out that Anderson's actions would ironically lead to fame, both through legal repercussions and the attention of the National Snowboarding Commission.

While watching other snowboarders, Shaggy learns from Chris that he’s still in the competition. Shaggy insists he won’t participate. But as he turns, Scooby, disguised as the Snow Creature, surprises him. Shaggy tries to flee, but Scooby tackles him, and they slide down the mountain together. Shaggy wins the competition, but the prize money is gone. They both laugh it off, with Shaggy saying, “Easy come, easy go!”

Continuity[]

Notes/trivia[]

Miscellaneous[]

Cultural references[]

  • The title plays off the Broadway song "There's No Business Like Show Business" from Annie Get Your Gun.
  • Bruce Wilkinson resembles and sounds like American politician and millionaire businessman Mitt Romney, who gained international recognition for his role in organizing the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.
    • Additionally, Chris Klug won his mentioned-bronze medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
  • In one scene, Nancy Chang asks "Can you hear me now?" while on her phone. The catchphrase from the Verizon Wireless commercials, featuring actor Paul Marcarelli who says it.
  • Fred distracting the creature with a flashlight is a reference to a similar scene in 1993's Jurassic Park wherein the character of Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) catches a Tyrannosaurus rex's attention using a flare. The scene's angle even mirrors that which occurred in the movie.
  • There are two references to Frosty the Snowman throughout the episode twice mentioned by Shaggy. When Shaggy sees the Snow Creature, he says that it's not a "Jolly Happy Soul" and later taunts the monster saying he has his "corncob pipe and button nose.".
  • The scene where Fred is in a wheelchair, holding binoculars and a phone, telling Daphne to get out of there, is a parody of an iconic scene in the 1954 film Rear Window starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly and directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
  • Fred at one point refers to the creature as Snow Miser, a character from the Christmas TV special The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974).

Adaptations[]

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • When Chris Klug lands after his first flip, his entire face is missing.
  • The Mystery Machine is empty when it cuts Nancy Chang off from asking her question to Bruce Wilkinson, and continues to be when Fred thinks he's watching a van that "looks" like the Mystery Machine on its own TV screen.
  • When the Mystery Machine makes a perfect parking, its windows are shiny so it's impossible to see inside. The windows of the cars on either side of the van are also shiny as well.
  • Elle only gets a couple of inches away from the right hand side of the screen and her snowboard and notepad already disappear, making it look like they've been cut in half.
  • When Shaggy wonders who's been controlling the Snow Creature robot, the lower half of his jacket is brown.
  • When Velma says about watching all those snowboarding movies got her thinking that Avalanche Anderson must have connections in Hollywood, her left foot is hovering over the chair the latter is tied to, instead of on the ground.
  • After returning to the lounge because Fred received an injury, there is a shot of Velma and Daphne from their backs next to Shaggy and Fred. When Velma passes Daphne, Daphne's foot pops into the foreground over the bed.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • Apparently an exception to the gang sharing a hotel room was made in this episode. Probably because they have separate bedrooms. Specifically, there's only one bedroom, another bed seems to be in the main room.
  • Daphne implies there was foul play in Theodore Schussman's accident, referring to his collider as a "so-called" snowboarder, when she read nothing else to support this.
    • It seems she may have been reading how it was written, which makes it the newspaper implying foul play for some reason.
  • It must have been a prestigious competition if it still went ahead with no sponsors, and with the expected million dollar prize money having been removed.
  • In the end, no film crews or audience are visible at the competition.
  • The abrupt conclusion of Shaggy winning may be funnier, but not at all believable.

Quotes[]

Nancy Chang: And how will these high-profile games be affected by the loss of Olympic bronze medalist, Chris Klug, under mysterious circumstances?
Bruce Wilkinson: Nancy, I'm sure with a million dollars at stake, the other competitors will be hungry for victory.
Fred: Chris Klug injured?
Velma: Mysterious circumstances?
Daphne: One million dollars?
Shaggy: Hungry?

Shaggy: But we, like, saw him wounded by the creature, didn't we?
Velma: No. We saw him lying in the snow. He told us he was attacked. Avalanche was about to make a miraculous recovery.
Chris Klug: But, Avalanche, why?
Avalanche Anderson: I used to be the best in the world. I wanted that back, and the only thing standing in my way was you! (to the gang) If it weren't for you interloping adolescents
Velma: —That's "meddling kids"!
Avalanche Anderson: —And that gluttonous mutt, I'd be famous again!
Fred: Oh, you'll be famous, alright — with both the authorities and the National Snowboarding Commission.
