The Sword, the Fox, and the Scooby-Doo! is the fifteenth episode of season 1 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?
Premise[]
While in Japan, Mystery Inc. runs into Mark Hamill, who is having a class reunion. A mystery presents itself when a Fox Monster kidnaps one of Hamill's old teachers.
Synopsis[]
The Nile C. Kinnick High School in Japan hosts a class reunion of its alumni, including actor Mark Hamill. However, the event is attacked by a fox monster, who kidnaps one of Hamill's former teachers, Mr. Berle. Soon after, Mystery Inc., while touring Japan, encounters the fox monster on the road, who drives the Mystery Machine off the road and on the edge of a bridge. Hamill appears and rescues Mystery Inc., preventing them from falling off the bridge. Sharing their experiences with the fox monster, they collaborate and begin investigating the monster.
They decide to return to the scene of the crime, the restaurant where the event was hosted. They found the place ransacked, and finding a hole made in the ground by the monster, they found a historic level underneath that had been sealed off for decades. There, they meet Hamill's classmate, Kelly, who envied his success as an actor; her jealousy and anger leads Mystery Inc. to flag her as a suspect. Suddenly, Scooby encounters the fox monster, who chases Mystery Inc. around the lower floor.
Though they escape the fox monster, they are trapped under rubble, so Scooby digs a tunnel to escape the wreckage. They travel to Griddly Tunnel, a tunnel rumoured to be haunted by the ghost of a samurai. There, they meet Coach Roachner, Hamill's former physical education teacher. They follow the tunnel to a Shinto temple and note the fox statue in the temple. As the temple was dedicated to the Shinto god Inari Okami, Hamill recounts legend that states that an ancient sword was dedicated to the god.
The fox monster reappears and attacks Mystery Inc., though they succeed in escaping its pursuit. Mystery Inc. deduces that the fox monster is looking for the sword. At that moment, Hamill finds the sword simply concealed in a broomstick. Using the sword as bait, they prepare a trap for the fox monster.
Mystery Inc. leaves the sword in plain sight, just underneath a large bell. Though they succeed in luring the monster with the sword and dropping a bell on it, the monster burrows underground, escaping the trap. In addition, now armed with a sharp sword, the monster attacks Mystery Inc. Hamill decides to battle the fox monster with his own toy sword; though initially at a standstill, Hamill uses a diversion tactic, then disarms the fox monster. Unarmed, the monster attempts to retreat, but runs face-first into the bell, knocking itself out.
When they unmasked the fox monster, it turned out to be Coach Roachner. During the class reunion event, Roachner discovered the Shinto temple where the sword was purported to be located. He tried to acquire the sword for himself to sell, but was stopped by Mr. Berle, who wanted to contribute the historic antique to a museum. So, Roachner developed the fox monster disguise to abduct Berle, as well as scare other people from interfering with his search efforts at the temple so he could locate the sword for himself. After Roachner is handed over to authorities, Berle is found alive and the sword is put on display at the museum, where Hamill, Shaggy and Scooby play with flashlights, using them as lightsabers.

Cultural references[]
- Hamill's background of going to high school in Japan is true. Mark Hamill's father, William Thomas Hamill, was part of the U.S. Navy, leading Hamill and his family to move frequently. When Hamill was in high school, his family was stationed in Japan, where Mark ended up graduating from Nile C. Kinnick High School in 1969.
- Kinnick was originally located in Yokohama, Japan (about 25-miles away from Tokyo), which is how the school got the nickname of "Yo-Hi." In 1959, the school was renamed after a Navy Aviator named Nile Clarke Kinnick Jr. and was relocated to the United States Fleet Activities Yokosuka-naval base in Yokosuka, Japan (about 22-miles from Yokohama).
- A number of references to the Star Wars franchise are made during the episode, including light saber fights, Jedi mind tricks, and a trashcan resembling R2D2.
- The Fox Monster's design shows some influence from Totoro, a giant animal spirit from the 1988 Studio Ghibli animated feature My Neighbor Totoro. (In the movie's 2005 English dub, Frank Welker provided Totoro's vocal effects.) Foxes also have a strong association with the supernatural in Japanese folklore.
- Hamill mentions a god recognized in Shinto religion, Inari Okami. However, the story of the legendary sword is fictional, though swords are commonly shown in depictions of the god.
- Hamill also references the events of a previous episode, What a Night, for a Dark Knight!.
Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]
- None known.
Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]
- Shaggy said that they took one of Mark Hamill's photos while flying with Wonder Woman, as a reference to The Scooby of a Thousand Faces!. However, they flew with Wonder Woman at night, and it is daytime in the photo.
