The Nightmare Ghost of Psychic U! is the fourteenth episode of season 1 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?
Premise[]
While stopping at a school for psychics, Mystery Inc. meet Whoopi Goldberg.
Synopsis[]
At the Max Fielding Psychic University in the Poconos Mountains, television host Whoopi Goldberg, Flavius, and other psychics conduct a seance to locate a lost dog. However, a large, humanoid monster appears instead. At the same time, the members of Mystery Inc. travel through the mountains, and while they intend to go to a different destination they get lost and arrive at the university. They meet Goldberg at the door, who reveals she is studying at the university to become a psychic in order to help find lost animals. However, at the entrance hall they are attacked by the nightmare ghost. The ghost somehow predicts their attempts to escape and somehow close the doors and windows.
Goldberg and Mystery Inc. successfully escape the ghost in the room of alumni. They discover that Williams, the headmaster, intends to shut down the school due to the ghost. However, according to the words of the school's founder, Maximillian Fielding, he is forced to keep the school open even in spite of the monster attacks.
At this point, Mystery Inc. splits up. Daphne, Fred and Velma investigate the ghost, and although they initially find no incriminating clues, they discover a secret room hidden behind a crooked painting. Inside, they find ski equipment and brochures, indicating that the perpetrator had been attempting to transform the school into a ski resort. However, before they could investigate further, they are trapped in the room, and snowmaking machines blow large amounts of snow into the room via the windows. Daphne, Fred and Velma are unable to barricade the windows and the snow fills the room.
Shaggy and Scooby assist Goldberg in studying for her final exam for graduation. After eating pancakes, they play "psychic hide-and-seek," only to encounter the nightmare ghost. They are chased into the library, and after evading it they help Goldberg practice her psychic abilities, namely hypnosis. However, she senses the Daphne, Fred and Velma in danger, and successfully rescue them behind the crooked painting, buried in snow. They also find Fieldings' last will and testament, which would, if the university were to shut down, grant the property to his closest relative. Investigating the archives, they identify Flavius as a confirmed descendant of Fieldings.
After the nightmare ghost attempts to fill the halls with snow, Fred decides to set a trap for the ghost. Goldberg, Shaggy and Scooby attempt to locate the center of the hedge maze where the trap is set. However, while they encounter and are chased by the nightmare ghost in the maze, Goldberg's flawed intuition leads her down the wrong path, leading to a dead end, though she does find a lost dog at the location. Shaggy runs through the walls of the maze, eventually reaching its center with its signature giraffe statue. The ghost follows them, but anticipating its appearance, Fred, Daphne and Velma aim snowmaking machines at the monster, freezing it in a layer of ice, trapping it.
The nightmare ghost turns out to be the cafeteria lady. The cafeteria lady was, in reality, one of Fieldings' descendants and would have been the most suitable heir to the school. She wanted to inherit the school and turn it into a ski resort, so she disguised herself as the nightmare ghost to scare its attendees away and force the school to close. Being known for her ability to ski on stilts, she made use of stilts to make the monster appear taller. After the cafeteria lady handed to the authorities for her crimes, Mystery Inc. attends Goldberg's graduation ceremony. For her help in solving the mystery, Goldberg's portrait is going to be placed in the room of alumni.

Cultural references[]
- Whoopi's paranormal interest is a reference to her role as Oda Mae Brown in the movie Ghost, which was released on July 13th of 1990.
Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]
- Snuggly Puggly being a parody of Scooby from A Pup Named Scooby-Doo is not always consistent going off-model outside of close-up shots of Wuggly Puggly's photo.
- The Nightmare Ghost's penny-shaped eyes lose detail when it blocks Mystery Inc. and Whoopi's path.
Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]
- Once the engraved text beneath Maximillian Fielding's portrait is shown, it all disappears in subsequent scenes.
- Fred, Velma and Daphne did not enter the secret room in their winter clothes, but come out with them on.
- Shaggy and Whoopi also have their winter clothes on when the entire inside of the building is covered in snow, but with virtually no time to retrieve them after finding Maximillian Fielding's will.
- If Burt Friendly's cameo is supposed to be considered seriously, then he would have been an old man in Revenge of the Swamp Monster!.
- At one point, Velma claims that the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has used psychics in investigations. However, this claim is contested and unsubstantiated by any confirmed cases.[1][2]
