The Movieland Monsters! is the twenty-sixth and final episode of season 2 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? and the fifty-second and final episode overall in the series.

Premise[]

The gang helps Carol Burnett beta test her brand new virtual reality Movieland world. However, their VR experiences are disrupted when they are attacked by an anomaly who is clearly not part of the movie.

Synopsis[]

Mystery Inc. is invited to help test Carol Burnett's virtual reality simulation, in which all the worlds are based on classic films. With the help of the four workers developing the game, Burnett and Mystery Inc. enter their first world, based on the romantic drama film Casablanca. Set in Casablanca during the Second World War, they visit Rick's Café Américain, where Burnett plays protagonist Rick Blaine. After briefly recreating one of the scenes, however, they are attacked by a ghost-like monster, who was not meant to be part of the simulation. They escape onto an airplane, but the ghost then appears on the plane as the pilot, forcing them to jump off.

Because they are in a simulation, they land safely without taking damage. Arriving in the world of epic Western film The Searchers, Burnett now plays the role of Ethan Edwards, a Civil War veteran searching for his abducted niece. Trekking through the desert, they arrive at a saloon and Carol asks the bartender for glasses of water. However, they are attacked by the ghost monster again, who poses as the bartender, a cowboy, and three gamblers. Velma deduces that while the ghost monster took countless forms, all have the same general appearance.

Escaping to the world of A Night at the Opera, Burnett plays as businessman Otis B. Driftwood. Velma explains that because all versions of the ghost monster appear similar, all are being operated by one person who is sabotaging the simulation with a virus. However, they are attacked by a horde of ghost waiters, who chase them through a door into the world of another film.

Arriving in the Land of Oz from The Wizard of Oz, Mystery Inc. and Burnett plays the major characters from the film; Dorothy and Daphne both choose to play Dorothy. They decide to follow the golden brick road, but Daphne and Burnett are captured by flying monkeys. The other members of Mystery Inc. follow them to the castle of the Wicked Witch of the West. Confronting the witch, they find that the witch is really the ghost monster in disguise. Upon being doused with water and melting, the ghost monster sheds its witch disguise and chases Mystery Inc.

Mystery Inc. and Burnett decide the only way to stop the monster is to return to the start of the film, where Dorothy's house crushes the Wicked Witch of the East. Walking backwards along the golden brick road, they reverse time and return to the start of the story. When the ghost monster appears, they move forward again, crushing the monster under the house. They crush the ghost several more times, incapacitating it to be unmasked.

The ghost turned out to be the simulation's lead programmer, Gemma, though the other programmers, Tammy, Todd, and Cal, were also involved in the scheme. After Mystery Inc. and Burnett end the simulation and return to the real world, the programmers explain that they enjoyed working with Burnett and were upset the project was finishing, so they sabotaged the program to postpone it. Burnett forgives them, stating that she would continue working with them for future projects, including her next project which would include the ghost monster. Concluding their investigation, Mystery Inc. and Burnett sing the closing theme song of The Carol Burnett Show.

Cultural references[]

  • The following classic movies are parodied in this episode:
    • Casablanca (1943)
    • The Searchers (1956)
    • A Night at the Opera (1935)
    • The Wizard of Oz (1939)
  • All the classic movies parodied were made by either Warner Brothers or MGM.
  • Each of the movie worlds are shown in a specific aspect ratio, some of which are accurate to their respective movie's aspect ratios:
    • Both Casablanca and A Night at the Opera are shown in approximately 4:3, which are accurate to the original films[1][2].
    • The Searchers is shown with a very wide aspect ratio (approximately 10:3), which is not accurate as the original film was in 1.85:1[3].
    • The Wizard of Oz is shown in widescreen ratio, which is not accurate to the original film, as its intended aspect ratio is 1.37:1[4]. However, widescreen versions of the film are available.
  • The episode ends with the closing theme song of The Carol Burnett Show. At the end of the song, Burnett tugs on her ear, as she did on her show, which was a message to her grandmother. This song replaces Scooby's typical catchphrase "Scooby-Dooby-Doo."

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • None known.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • Oddly, Boomerang Turkey did not show the second act of this episode (as demonstrated by the fact that there is a Western scene shown in the credits that was not aired, and the episode only was 14 minutes long). Boomerang Turkey had also done this previously with "Scooby-Doo and the Sky Town Cool School!"
  • Both the Region 1 and Region 2 DVD releases give the title of this episode as "The TV and Movieland Monsters!" in the episode listing.
