The Legend of the Gold Microphone! is the ninteenth episode of season 2 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? and the forty fifth overall.

Premise[]

Reverend Run (Joseph Simmons from Run DMC) is trying to open a hip hop youth center on the site of the Artemis Supper Club. However, when it is haunted by the ghost of its previous owner, the gang becomes involved with the search for a gold microphone.

Synopsis[]

Two construction workers work on the electrical wiring in a hip hop youth centre to prepare it for its grand opening. However, they are attacked and chased out of the building by a ghost musician. Later, Mystery Inc. arrives at the youth centre to attend its grand opening, but find the venue deserted, with no people other than Reverend Run, who states that he has attempted to prepare the building for its grand opening, but it was cursed.

Run explains that he has built the studio as a homage to hip hop culture on the site of the Artemis Supper Club, a venue that was destroyed in a fire. The owner, band leader Tabb Tatters, did not survive the fire, nor did his drummer, Bones McCann. After meeting with a real estate agent Pat Peterson, attempting to acquire the land for his new projects, Mystery Inc. and Run encounter the ghost of Tabb Tadders, who appears and summons the skeleton of Bones McCann to attack them.

While the skeleton focuses on chasing Shaggy, Scooby, and Run (participating in a musical standoff), Fred, Daphne, and Velma search the venue for clues, immediately finding a computer that was on despite the building's power outage. After reuniting with the others, they escape the monsters by accidentally finding a hidden speakeasy, where they find a metal detector which only detected non-ferrous metals. Encountering the monsters once more, they escape to an exit leading them to the public library.

At the library, they research the history surrounding Tadders and McCann. They find that Tadders was known for having a golden, jewel-encrusted microphone, which was hidden and lost since the fire. Returning to the speakeasy, they briefly search the scene before finding the golden microphone behind a mirror, opened by creating a rhythm indicated on the mirror. While Velma returns to the library for further research, the other members begin to prepare a trap for the monsters, using the microphone as bait.

Scooby and Reverend Run appear on the stage, with Scooby holding the golden microphone, which lures the ghost and skeleton into appearing. Next, Daphne presses a button to make the ghost of Tadders disappear, revealing it is only a hologram. Then, the members of Mystery Inc. pass the microphone to each other to prevent the skeleton of McCann from taking it. Finally, the skeleton is hit by a sandbag, subduing it so Run could restrain it.

The skeleton of Bones McCann turned out to be the librarian from the library, really a treasure hunter searching for the golden microphone. She got a job as a librarian only recently so she could have access to the speakeasy tunnels to the hip hop center. When she got there, she created the hologram of the ghost of Tabb Tatters and disguised herself as the skeleton of Bones McCann to scare people away. She also kept sabotaging the wiring to stop the center from opening until she could find the microphone. She attempted to locate it with her gold-finding metal detector, but she couldn’t because the golden microphone was not really made of gold. It was painted gold and the gems are colored glass. After the librarian is handed over to the authorities, Run invites Scooby to perform at the grand opening event, delivering his lines into Tatters' microphone.

Miscellaneous[]

Cultural references[]

  • The rhythm Reverend Run uses to open the compartment holding the golden microphone is "Shave and a Haircut", often used as a sting in classic animation and used extensively in the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
  • Tabb Tatters appears to have been named and modeled after legendary jazz conductor and singer Cab Calloway.

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • None known.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • In the episode, newspaper clippings clearly show the name "Tabb" Tatters, but in the credits it is given as "Tab".
  • The newspapers also name the Artemis Supper Club as the Athena Supper Club.
  • One newspaper clipping, depicting the fire, misspells "incalculable" as "incalculabal."
  • During the first chase scene, Scooby knocks the head off the skeleton of Bones McCann, which would be impossible if the skeleton were a costume.
  • The speakeasy mirror contains five stars to indicate five beats, but Reverend Run taps on the counter seven times to produce the rhythm.
