The Horrible Haunted Hospital of Dr. Phineas Phrag! is the third episode of season 2 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, and the twenty-ninth overall.
Premise[]
Kristen Schaal wants to be a mystery solver and happens to meet Mystery Inc. as they investigate a haunted hospital with the ghost of a 1950s doctor named Phineas Phrag. But is Schaal going too far, trying to emulate each member of Mystery Inc?
Synopsis[]
At the Eastside Hospital, the staff moves the patients out of the hospital to prepare for its permanent closure. However, an orderly encounters a strange monster hidden under a linen, which attacks the orderly. Mystery Inc., hearing of the monster attacks, visits the hospital to investigate the monster. According to Velma, the monster is the ghost of Dr. Phineas Phrag, a scientist who became a monster after drinking a botched solution he concocted in his laboratory. Phrag was rumoured to have disappeared and haunted the hospital since.
Upon their arrival at the hospital, they meet actress Kristen Schaal, who, as a monster hunter, intended to capture the Phineas Phrag Monster. After Schaal claims to have known Mystery Inc. since childhood, she decides to collaborate with the group to investigate the monster. They first find the orderly hiding in a room, alive but traumatized. Then, using night vision goggles, they find the hospital administrator packing things in his office. The administrator claims to be happy the hospital was closing as he would be able to retire with pay.
After splitting from the rest of the group to search for clues, Shaggy, Scooby and Schaal encounter the monster. After a prolonged chase, Mystery Inc. escapes from the monster using Schaal's grappling hook. There, they meet Big Bob McCallister, who claimed to have come to the hospital to visit his mother, only to find the hospital vacated. Mystery Inc. and Schaal help McAllister leave the hospital on a taxi, but McAllister points them towards a likely suspect, Dr. Wheeler.
Mystery Inc. finds Dr. Wheeler in the laboratory, who ominously warns them to evacuate the premises. As they continue to investigate, Schaal attempts to identify with each member of Mystery Inc., but fails to do the same job they are capable of. Further investigating the hospital, they find a large concrete core drill. Velma decides she has enough evidence to determine the culprit, but they are suddenly attacked by the monster. While the monster chases Mystery Inc., Schaal drives the Mystery Machine into the hospital. After the monster attacks the Mystery Machine, Schaal drives the vehicle out the building, sending it crashing to the ground below.
Mystery Inc. decides to set a trap to capture the monster. Though the trap succeeds in capturing the monster in a net, the monster simply tears out of the net, breaking free. The monster then chases Mystery Machine around the coring drill before Shaggy accidentally activates it, causing it to drill into the ground and reveal oil hidden underneath. Finally, Schaal uses a whip to fight against the monster, wrapping the whip around the drill, tricking it into holding the whip in its hand, and activating the drill, tying the monster to the drill. Mystery Inc. is then free to unmask the monster.
The Phineas Phrag monster turned out to be Big Bob McCallister. After making a phone call with McCallister's mother, Velma confirmed that she was never in the hospital, proving McCallister was lying about his reasons for being at the crime scene. Instead, McCallister disguised himself as the monster to shut down the hospital so he could drill the land for oil. After McCallister is handed over to authorities, Schaal poses as the monster and attempts to drive away with the Mystery Machine, but the vehicle no longer works properly after sustaining severe damage.

Notes/trivia[]
- Scooby announces the celebrity guest.
- There's a flashback to when the members of the gang were kids playing in a sandbox, it clearly takes place before the events of A Pup Named Scooby-Doo but after the flashback from the Dog Gone Scooby. Despite this, it was a missed opportunity not to have the designs look like those from the mentioned show.
- The door gag is subverted when the monster waits for Mystery Inc. in the hallway.
- This episode was the first episode aired in Australia, as the first part of an omnibus showing with The Phantom, the Talking Dog and the Hot Hot Hot Sauce!.
- This episode airs as the first episode of Season 2 in several different countries.
- The episode was produced as the first episode of Season 2 (201) with The Phantom, the Talking Dog and the Hot Hot Hot Sauce! being the second episode produced (202).
- The villain in this episode appeared in a "flashback" in the season 1 episode "The High School Wolfman's Musical Lament," meaning this episode was possibly originally intended as part of season 1 during production.

Miscellaneous[]
- Disguises: Shaggy, Scooby-Doo and Kristen Schaal as surgeons.
- Traps: A simple trap intended to capture the monster in a net.
- Clues: A large coring drill.
Cultural references[]
- The grappling hook that Kristen had may be a reference to what her former character Mabel used in the show Gravity Falls.
Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]
- None known.
Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]
- Kristen Schaal has blue eyes in the present day but black eyes in a childhood flashback.
- When Kristen Schaal, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo dress up as doctors, while they all wear masks they do not wear surgical gloves.
- At one point, Schaal burns a map using a magnifying glass and desk lamp. However, this is not possible as artificial light sources are not hot enough to burn paper.
- After Mystery Inc. first escapes the Phineas Phrag Monster, the culprit, Big Bob McCallister, appears immediately after. It would not have been possible for McAllister to remove his costume and travel up a floor to meet Mystery Inc. in such a short period of time.
- At one point, Schaal drives the Mystery Machine through a wall with an elevator door on it. However, no elevator is visible on the other side of the wall.
- Fred states that Schaal "drove the Mystery Machine through the fourteenth-floor window." However, she actually drove the vehicle through a wall.
