The High School Wolfman's Musical Lament! is the twenty-fifth episode of season 1 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?

Premise[]

Christian Slater's high school prom is getting a do-over because the original one was ruined by a wolfman. But will the wolfman return to spoil this prom? And with so many songs, will the Gang actually do a song and dance number?

Synopsis[]

Travelling to the theatrical road Broadway, Mystery Inc. decides to sing about their various experiences as mystery-solvers ("The Mystery Machine's on Broadway!"). However, while on the road, they are attacked by a werewolf creature, who tears the ceiling off the Mystery Machine and sends it sinking into a lake. The vehicle is later taken out of the lake by Broadway actor Christian Slater, who introduces himself as well as the werewolf ("Do-Over Prom"). According to Slater, his high school prom was ruined by the werewolf years ago, and while the school intended to do a do-over prom, the werewolf threatens to ruin the prom as well.

Mystery Inc. decides to visit Slater's performing arts school, where they discover that the venue has been completely destroyed by the werewolf. They meet Simone, a former student at the school, who wanted a separate prom for clowns. However, shortly after Simone leaves, the werewolf appears and chases Mystery Inc. in an extended chase. After Mystery Inc. escapes the werewolf, they discover the heel of a shoe sole that was left behind by the werewolf. However, Slater, who fell through a trapdoor during the chase, broke his leg and is now confined to a wheelchair.

Mystery Inc. and Slater then examine their suspects ("Red Herrings"), and Slater introduces three suspects in addition to Simone. The first suspect, the drama teacher, despises dance and would have reason to sabotage the prom. The dance teacher also despises proms as she does not approve of the type of dance used. Lastly, Timmy Thoms, Slater's former classmate, despises him and is jealous of his success. However, they find Thoms suspiciously running through the school. They decide to follow him, though Slater separates from Mystery Inc. as he is incapable of going down the stairs on a wheelchair.

Traveling through the boiler room, they are attacked by the werewolf, and though they meet back with Slater, find a tuft of hair at the crime scene, and escape, Slater falls down a flight of stairs in the process and suffers more severe injuries, now wrapped in a full-body cast. Meeting at the diner, Mystery Inc. and Slater review the clues in the diner ("Diners for Dinner, Dinner for Diners"). Deciding they have gathered sufficient evidence, they decide to set a trap for the werewolf at the prom's venue. With Slater, Shaggy, and Scooby successfully luring the werewolf into appearing, the other members of Mystery Inc. activate the trap ("Trappin' Man"). With the trap working as intended, the werewolf is trapped in a cage in the middle of the stage.

The werewolf turned out to be Slater; the person in the full-body cast was, in reality, Simone, who was bound to the cast against her will. Velma explains how she arrived at the conclusion that Slater was the culprit ("I Suspected Christian Slater From the Start"). When Slater first shook his hand with Velma, Velma discovered that he had blue paint on his hands, which came from tearing off the Mystery Machine's ceiling. The werewolf attack was masterfully-planned; he faked all his injuries so he could use Simone as a body double in a full-body cast, and he used a mixture of advanced stagecraft and audio recordings to simulate the werewolf when he could not physically attack Mystery Inc. as the werewolf.

Slater explains his motives for disguising himself as the werewolf and ruining the prom ("Beautiful Meddling Kids"). During the original prom, Slater was invited to dance by a classmate, Maryanne Mulrooney. Not wanting to dance with her, while also ashamed to decline, decided to disguise himself as a werewolf and destroy the prom. When a do-over prom was organized, Slater reused the disguise to avoid dancing with Mulrooney. Slater regrets his actions and seeks to apologize for destroying the dance. However, Mulrooney appears and accepts his apology, and they dance together with Mystery Inc.

Continuity[]

Notes/Trivia[]

Miscellaneous[]

  • Disguises: Velma as Little Red Riding Hood (during the door gag). Scooby as a music conductor helping the Wolfman play a solo; Scooby's wig suggests he's impersonating Leopold Stokowski.
  • Traps: A complex trap that ends with the werewolf trapped in a cage.
  • Clues: A tuft of fake fur and the heel of a shoe sole.

Cultural references[]

  • The title is based on the film High School Musical.
  • Slater played a wolfman in a sketch when he hosted Saturday Night Live on October 26, 1991.
  • During a chase scene, the werewolf wears a sheep outfit. This is a reference to the idiom "a wolf in sheep's clothing."
  • One of the suspects during "Red Herrings," the drama teacher, is seen holding a skull. This is a reference to an iconic scene in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare.
  • Velma's dance moves during "I Suspected Christian Slater from the Start" duplicate those of the showgirl character Red in the Tex Avery-directed animated shorts Red Hot Riding Hood (1943) and Swing Shift Cinderella (1945).

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • When Simone was in a full body cast she was dropped during the song Trappin' Man (A Man Called Fred) vertical towards the Werewolf however in the next scene her body is in a horizontal position.
  • In the elevator scene, the werewolf's tail disappears.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • The episode credits give the character's name as Timmy Thoms. The subtitles do the same. However, during the suspects song, Velma has spelled his surname "Toms" on the suspect list.
  • How could Simone be in the same middle school drama club as Kenan Thompson, who was born in 1978 and also the same high school year as Slater who was born in 1969?
  • In "Diners for Dinner, Dinner for Diners", Daphne says 'no full moon it seems' but at the end of "Do-Over Prom" there is clearly a full moon, which is even utilized in the scene.
