The Dreaded Remake of Jekyll & Hyde! is the thirteenth episode of season 2 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, and the thirty-ninth overall.

Premise[]

The gang returns to Mammoth Studios, where Sandy Duncan is remaking her Jekyll and Hyde movie. However, the Hyde monster is also back, trying to stop filming.

Synopsis[]

Mystery Inc. returns to Mammoth Studios in Hollywood, where Daphne has been hired as a stuntwoman for a new film. However, while driving through the set, they are attacked by a Hyde monster, who attempts to push set pieces onto the Mystery Machine and threaten them to leave. After the monster leaves, they meet a film director, as well as an actor, Bill Billington, whose costume is identical to that of the monster. Finally, they meet Sandy Duncan, also acting in the film.

Duncan explains that they are filming a remake of the Jekyll and Hyde film she made with Mystery Inc., but a Hyde monster has been terrorizing the set. Collaborating to investigate the monster, they meet with another actress, Tabitha, playing a small role in the film. As they split up from the rest of Mystery Inc., Daphne and Duncan meet the writer, Bob, who argues over the director's changes to the original story. They then begin filming a fight scene with Daphne battling two actors.

Meanwhile, Tabitha gives the other members of Mystery Inc. a tour of the Egyptian-themed movie set, but is suddenly kidnapped by a mummy emerging from a sarcophagus. They decide to follow the mummy through a hidden trapdoor, where they find a hidden area. There, they are attacked by a large mechanical dinosaur, who chases them onto a lake before its power cable unplugs from the outlet, deactivating the robot. However, a manta ray suddenly appears and chases them away. Reuniting with Daphne and Duncan, they discover that the studio owner has placed an insurance policy on the film and stands to earn a fortune should the film fail. Suddenly, they witness the Hyde monster abducting Billington.

After following the monster and later escaping its pursuit, Velma finds blueprints which fell out of the monster's pocket. Velma identifies the blueprints as that of the studio from 1930. Consulting with the person who previously posed as the Hyde monster, Zalia Z. Fairchild, they deduce that the monster is pursuing the studio's old films, which have been lost for decades and can only be found with the blueprints. Locating the vault containing the films, they decide to use it for their trap.

As part of the trap, Mystery Inc. decides to create their own film, in which Shaggy holds the blueprints in his hand. This successfully lures the Hyde monster into appearing, seizing the blueprints and attempting to flee. However, Mystery Inc. activates the trap, launching the Hyde monster through the various set pieces and attacking him with the various mechanisms, including the dinosaur and manta ray, before finally capturing the monster in a net.

The Hyde monster turned out to be Tabitha. Tabitha found the blueprint and was aware of the hidden lost films. She intended to locate and sell the films so she could start her own studio and become the star of her own films. However, before she could locate them, the area became occupied by the film production. So, Tabitha disguised herself as the Hyde monster to terrorize the film production, driving them away from the back lot so she could find the films. To ward suspicion off herself, she faked her own abduction using a mechanical mummy. After Tabitha is handed to authorities, Mystery Inc. attempts to finish their film, but they accidentally destroy the set in an accident.

Continuity[]

  • The episode has characters and callbacks to The New Scooby-Doo Movies episode Sandy Duncan's Jekyll and Hyde, making it somewhat of a sequel. As such, it is the first episode that makes good on the original premise of this show, that it is a spiritual sequel to the former.
    • Sandy Duncan and Zalia Z. Fairchild, both from the original episode, appear in this episode.
    • Still images from the original episode are shown on a bulletin board.
    • At one point, the director expresses his desires to remove the "damsel-in-distress" aspect of the original script. This refers to a scene in which Daphne was kidnapped by Mr. Hyde in the original episode.
  • The mummy in this episode is the same design that appeared two episodes ago in Liza Koshy's video (The Internet on Haunted House Hill!). This could mean that this episode was intended to air before that one, as Liza's video was referencing old monsters that the gang already faced in the series.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • Daphne announces the celebrity guest.
  • The episode is itself a remake of and sequel to the The New Scooby-Doo Movies episode Sandy Duncan's Jekyll and Hyde.
  • The director's appearance somewhat resembles that of famous real-life director Peter Jackson.
  • Sandy Duncan correcting Scooby on saying "cursed" is a reference to a running gag from A Pup Named Scooby-Doo where when Scooby repeats something a character had said in his speech impediment and said character corrects him on how to say it.

Miscellaneous[]

  • Disguises: Mystery Inc. as belly dancers, astronauts, and aliens.
  • Traps: Shaggy lures the Hyde monster with the blueprints, then Mystery Inc. captures him with a complex trap.
  • Clues: The studio owner's insurance policy documents and 1930 blueprints of Mammoth Studios.

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • When the cafeteria woman closes the shutters on Shaggy and Scooby, they are seen open again seconds later.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • This episode is a sequel to Sandy Duncan's Jekyll and Hyde, implying the two series are set in the same universe, however, the gang are shown not to know some other The New Scooby-Doo Movies guest stars like Batman and Speed Buggy. If not an inconsistency, then it would suggest that either:
    • Those specific episodes happened prior to any TNSD encounters.
    • The shows are set in slightly different universes, where some, but not all, of these encounters have occurred.
