The Cursed Cabinet of Professor Madds Markson! is the seventh episode of season 1 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?

Premise[]

The gang spend a night in the haunted and soon to be demolished Savanna Hotel in Las Vegas, where they find celebrity magicians Penn & Teller.

Synopsis[]

Touring Las Vegas, Mystery Inc. is offered one million dollars to stay in the supposedly haunted Savanna Hotel for one night, which was scheduled for demolition the morning after. Upon meeting magician duo Penn Jillette and Teller, they enter the hotel, only for the exits to be immediately sealed off. Via video conference, the challenge host, reclusive billionaire Hugo Hauser, explains that the hotel is haunted by the ghost of magician Madds Markson. In the entrance hall, they quickly encounter the ghost himself, who chases them out of the entrance hall but disappears.

Beginning their investigation, they find the Madds Markson Theater. Inside the theater, they witness the ghost performing his signature act, the cabinet transformation, in which he steps into a large cabinet and he is transformed into a rabbit-like monster. The rabbit chases Mystery Inc. out of the theater and through a casino, and while they manage to trap the rabbit inside the freezer, it vanishes.

Mystery Inc. decides to confront Hauser in his penthouse. However, they witness via a window Hauser being attacked by the rabbit, and when they enter, both Hauser and the rabbit are missing. With sufficient evidence to incriminate the culprit, they decide to set a trap to capture the monster.

They use a snare trap in the theater, but the trap is accidentally triggered by another person, historian Tess Flemmings. The trap failed, the rabbit monster appears and attacks Mystery Inc. During the physical struggle, the rabbit knocks Fred into the explosives used for the demolition, setting the timer to one minute remaining before detonation. To escape the demolition, the members of Mystery Inc, along with the monster, use a makeshift catapult to launch themselves out of the hotel just before it implodes. They unmask the monster.

The monster is revealed to be Teller. Teller wanted to organize a magic trick to impress Penn. So, he fabricated a haunting at the Savanna Hotel; he dressed up as both Hauser and the rabbit monster, and the ghost was a life-sized puppet hanging from tracks along the ceiling. To simulate the rabbit monster attacking Hauser in his penthouse, he created a shadow play using cardboard cutouts and train tracks. Penn praises Teller for his elaborate illusion. They offer Mystery Inc. the million dollars as a reward, but Fred declines the money. Suddenly, Penn and Teller mysteriously disappear.

Notes/Trivia[]

Cultural references[]

  • The escape from the hotel's demolition in progress and explosion is reminiscent of a scene in the film Die Hard, when McClane jumps from an exploding building.
  • The trick Teller pulled off with cardboard cutouts on a model train set is exactly what Kevin McCallister pulled off in the film Home Alone, as part of a fake Christmas party setup to ward off burglars Harry and Marv.

Miscellaneous[]

  • Disguises: Scooby-Doo and Shaggy as maids.
  • Traps: A snare trap.
  • Clues: Train tracks, an acryllic fingernail embedded in a wall.
  • Jeepers: 1

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • None known.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • The hotel is scheduled to be demolished the following morning, but the casino is still filled with slot machines, one of which still contained money.
  • Fred is wrong when he says Teller was last out of the casino. The Madds Markson Monster can be seen as one of the first out the window.

Quotes[]

Penn: Seen it a million times.

Daphne: (translating Teller) Don't worry. I speak mime. He's saying that he was being chased by that horrible monster and hid in this cupboard.

Fred: Now let's see who the ghost of Professor Madds Markson really is!
All: It's, it's. Huh?
Velma: Yeah. I don't know who this is.
Tess Flemmings: My name is Tess, Tess Flemmings.
All: Tess Flemmings?
Tess Flemmings: (Penn helps her out of the trap) Thanks, Mr. Jillette.
Scooby: Tess who?
Tess Flemmings: I'm a Las Vegas history buff. I sneaked into the hotel to get some last footage of the place before it's controlled demolition. And thanks to you meddling kids and magic legends Penn & Teller I got some great footage.

Daphne: Really impressive Mr Teller. But why? Why did you do it?
Teller: Because I wanted to pull off a magic trick big enough to impress Penn.
Scooby: Huh? Did you know he could talk?
