Scoobypedia

The Comic Book Convention Caper is the first of two stories in Scooby-Doo #12 by DC Comics. It was followed by Gnome Alone?

Premise[]

When Mystery Inc. visits a comic book convention, someone steals a copy of Civic Building of Mysteries #58, one of the rarest comic books in the world.

Synopsis[]

Mystery Inc. visits a comic book convention and meets one of its organizers, Chuck. However, as they browse the various comic books, the room fills with smoke, scaring the guests, and during the chaos, a costumed thief steals a comic book and disappears. Comic book vendor Merton reveals the book was Civic Building of Mysteries #58, a very rare comic book with only two copies, serving as the first part of a two-part series. The second part, issue 59, remains with Merton as the thief dropped it escaping.

Searching the scene, Fred and Daphne find the thief's costume which they discarded escaping. Shaggy deduces the culprit is mirroring the story of Closet of Secrets #118, in which the thief constantly switched costumes to confuse victims. Mystery Inc. keeps searching, but a costume party full of costumed guests makes it harder to find the culprit. Nevertheless, Shaggy and Scooby find and buy a copy of Closet of Secrets #118 to anticipate the culprit's next move. As Shaggy reads, he bumps into a man, whom Scooby suspects.

Soon, Scooby catches the costumed man as he attempts to steal Civic Building of Mysteries #59, suspecting him because he was the only costumed man not going to the costume party. The culprit is revealed to be former comic book writer Murray Felton, who was fired for lazily recycling his own stories. He hoped to steal the rare comic books so he could plagiarize its story and sell it as his own. Mystery Inc. hands him to authorities.
