He claimed to have won Happy Trails's riding stable in a card game, a bet Happy refused to honor because he caught Stu cheating. Stu wanted to drive the stable out of business to make it easier to collect on his bet and turn the stable into a computer graphics center, so he created the projection of the Nightly Mare. He also used the confusion caused by the apparition to do other pranks, like let the horses loose.
