According to a legend told in The Curse of Kaniaku, the Spirit of the Sea is a spiritual being that turned a cook into Kaniaku, a crab demon, for failing to prepare a recipe.
Physical appearance[]
The Spirit of the Sea was personified as a seiryƫ (azure dragon), featuring several rows of scales, a lined underbelly, and long horns.
Personality[]
The Spirit of the Sea was depicted as both benevolent as malevolent in the legend; on one hand, it gave the cook a chance to fulfill his desires; on the other hand, it condemned him to eternal damnation as punishment for circumstances that were ultimately out of his control.
History[]
Early life[]
According to the legend, the cook asked the Spirit of the Sea to give him the perfect recipe to make a princess fall in love with him. The Spirit of the Sea entrusted him with the Golden Scroll, but warned him that he had to prepare the dish perfectly or he would be cursed for eternity. The cook began preparing the dish, but bandits broke into his home and stole the golden scroll before the cook could finish it with the last ingredient. As such, the Spirit of the Sea turned him into Kaniaku, a crab demon. The golden scroll was stashed at a disreputable inn but remained lost for centuries, and the recipe on it became known as the Norowareta Reshipi (lit. Cursed Recipe).
Legacy[]
Over seven hundred years after the legend supposedly took place, a kimono tailor, Mr. Kagawa, disguised himself as Kaniaku to attack a businessman, Mr. Uehara. After Mystery Inc. caught Kagawa for his crimes, Fred accidentally found the golden scroll containing the Norowareta Reshipi.
