Season one[]

The spirit of El Bandito was the disguise of Gustavo, the owner of a gift shop in the town square of Mercado, Mexico. The monster was the supposed ghost of legendary bandit Benito Ureno, commonly known as El Bandito, and Gustavo was pursuing Ureno's lost treasure. The purpose of the disguise was to scare away townspeople during the Day of the Dead celebrations so he could look for the treasure inside El Bandito's mausoleum. During the attacks, the ghost stole El Bandito's bandana, a disguised map leading to the treasure.

The ghost was first seen attacking two teenagers while they were watching clouds. When Mystery Inc. visited Mercado for the Day of the Dead celebrations, the spirit of El Bandito attacked Shaggy and Scooby while they toured the town. It later attacked the entire group when they searched the cemetery, chasing them away from El Bandito's mausoleum. However, when they returned and searched the tomb, El Bandito shut them inside, trapping them inside the airtight mausoleum to suffocate. Mystery Inc. managed to break out of the mausoleum just before they ran out of oxygen.

Mystery Inc. finally confronted the monster, who was terrorizing innocent guests at the town square. After a physical battle over the bandana, Fred finally defeated the monster by cutting down a large El Bandito decoration, which fell on top of the monster. Gustavo was unmasked, exposed, and handed to authorities for his crimes. Fred used the bandana to find El Bandito's treasure, which was claimed by the town mayor.
