Space Station Scooby is the twenty-sixth and final episode of season 1 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?

Premise

Bill Nye and Mystery Inc. have to save Neil deGrasse Tyson, who is trapped on an international space station with a monster tardigrade.

Synopsis

On the Multinational Space Station, scientists Jacques Pierre and Pierre Jacques perform genetic modifications on tardigrades, but one of the tardigrades, upon being injected with a particular gene, grows to a gigantic size and attacks the scientists. Meanwhile, Mystery Inc. is invited by Bill Nye to travel aboard his experimental space voyager to the station. However, upon arriving at the station, they find the area ransacked; meeting with another scientist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, they discover that the station was attacked by a tardigrade monster. They also meet Aiko but are unable to find Olga.

While Velma and Aiko study the tardigrades, the others search for Olga. Shaggy and Scooby split from the group to eat the space rations, but they encounter the tardigrade monster. In the chase, Shaggy deploys the escape pod but forgets to get in it, launching the empty escape pod empty. Upon reuniting with Fred's group, they discover a rag left behind by the monster.

They then decide to use a robotic tracker to follow the monster's tracks. Using the device, they find Olga in hiding, but discover that the monster is travelling via the ventilation ducts. Shaggy and Scooby crawl through the ducts but encounter the monster; they are chased out of the space station and into the space outside. Mystery Inc. helps Shaggy and Scooby return to the station, but in the process the monster takes Nye's spaceship keys and research notes. They decide to prepare a trap.

Rigging a long corridor with ropes and a net, they successfully lure the monster into appearing and knock it into the trap. However, in the process, Scooby accidentally pulls the airlock lever, expelling the monster out of the space station and towards the Earth's gravitational field. They then set out to rescue the monster using Nye's voyager, capturing it but causing the spaceship to freefall towards Earth. Nye stabilizes the aircraft and Fred uses a remote-controlled Mystery Machine to replace the front landing wheels that were damaged. Landing safely on a runway, they unmask the tardigrade.

The monster turned out to be Jacques Pierre and Pierre Jacques, who faked their own killings. Discovering that tardigrades were solar-resistant, they intended to smuggle the tardigrade material back to Earth to be used as sunblock. In order to desert their posts at the space station, they created the tardigrade disguise and faked their own deaths. Though they initially intended to use an escape pod, after Scooby accidentally launched the escape pod, their only option was to steal the voyager, first stealing the keys from Nye. After the investigation, Shaggy and Scooby are rewarded with a large supply of space food, and Velma asks Nye why he built his own spaceship.

Continuity

• At one point, Fred uses a remote control to operate the Mystery Machine, a feature added to the vehicle by Steve Urkel. Fred mentions, however, that the vehicle was blown up before. These events occurred in When Urkel-Bots Go Bad!

• Both Bill Nye and Neil deGrasse Tyson know of Steve Urkel.

Notes/Trivia

• This episode was listed as episode 14 in the DVD instead of episode 26.
• When Neil deGrasse Tyson is talking about the future and the kids who might be going to Mars, he breaks the fourth wall by pointing to the viewers.
• For unknown reasons, the theme song is missing the trumpets track in this episode only.
• In the Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! episode In Space, Fred makes the comment that they were invited in the space shuttle by Velma's old science mentor. While not true then, that is exactly what happens in this story as Bill Nye invites Mystery Inc. on his experimental shuttle.
• During the episode both Neil deGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye quote science facts and probabilities, often at each other. The facts are:
  • Nye: "Altitude has a direct effect on the relative strength of the four inner molecular forces that determine any given boiling point."
  • Tyson: "Did you know that in space, not only can no one hear you scream, they can't hear you explode either?"
  • Nye: "[The trap is] based on an enneract, which is a nine-dimensional polytope."
  • Tyson: "Hey, did you know there may be planets out there made of diamonds?"

Cultural references

• The episode's primary setting, the Multinational Space Station, is a parody of the real-life International Space Station.
• During the first chase sequence, Shaggy and Scooby run through a room with a cutout of the St. Peter's Basilica in the background. This room likely belongs to Olga, the station's Russian astronaut.
• The slow-motion shot of Fred, Daphne, Velma and Bill Nye walking towards the Space Voyager is a reference to a similar shot in the movie The Right Stuff.
• Nye and the gang finding the space station apparently abandoned is reminiscent of the opening to Disney's The Black Hole, where the crew of the USS Palomino find and board the apparently abandoned USS Cygnus.
• The sequence when the gang chase the Tardigrade Monster in the NX-NYE and capture it before burning up in the Earth's atmosphere mimics the ending sequence of the space-themed James Bond film, Moonraker.
• The ending sequence when the NX-NYE's landing gear fails and they land using the Mystery Machine is a reference to the ending of the Thunderbirds premiere episode, "Trapped in the Sky".

  • Scooby's tail moving inside his space suit is a reference to the Chestburster in the movie Alien.
  • Neil DeGrasse Tyson references the tagline from Alien: "In space, no one can hear you scream."
  • When the Tardigrade Monster approaches a terrified Shaggy and Scooby at the airlock and snarls at them, it mimics the famous scene in the Alien franchise of an Alien snarling at Ellen Ripley.
  • Blasting the monster out of the airlock replicates the ending of Alien.

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches

• Just before Neil deGrasse Tyson shows the Gang footage of the monster, the "NYE 1" logo on Velma's spacesuit momentarily disappears.
• During the final scene on the launchpad, the shuttle tower cables are extended into the air but there is no shuttle. It is likely a reused frame from the beginning of the episode, but with the NX-NYE removed.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities

• The method with which Pierre Jacques and Jacques Pierre faked their own deaths or created the inflating tardigrade is unexplained.
• In the same scene where Neil de Grasse Tyson says that in space no one can hear you scream, or explode, we hear a number of sound effects in the vacuum of space.
