She Sees Sea Monsters by the Sea Shore is the ninth episode of the first season of What's New, Scooby-Doo?

Premise[]

The gang goes on a trip to the islands, where they spend their vacation until they encounter a sea serpent known as Motoshondu.

Synopsis[]

A German family on their holiday is attacked by a large creature called the Motoshondu, which completely destroys their boat.

The Mystery Gang is enjoying a beach vacation. Since Shaggy and Scooby are munching on snacks, Fred was playing solo volleyball, and while Velma is digging for treasures in the sand, and Daphne is surfing the waves on her surfboard and in her bikini. Suddenly, a Sea Turtle accidentally swipes Shaggy’s sandwich and swims off and frightens him, but Velma reassures him that sea turtles are harmless, because Fred knows there's danger out on the ocean since Daphne is surfing out there. Daphne encounters Stink Eye, a local surfer, who demands her to leave the waves to the locals, so she challenges him to a surfing race, but has a pedicure, and has this as her ride, and wins, and knocks Stink Eye into the water, and surfs onward, and continues, just as a giant sea monster, Motoshondu, appears out of nowhere from the waves, and heads toward her, and attacks her. Turning around to see the creature, Daphne, freaked out by this, flees, surfs up and down, and manages to escape from the beast, but gets her surfboard bitten off in half, and lands in the water to float to shore.

Coming to the shore, Velma examines the bite on the surfboard and exclaims that it's bigger than a shark's bite. Although, she denies the fact that there would be a monster in the waters. The German family disagrees and says that a monster is lurking in the ocean.

They are taken on a helicopter trip by Sharky, a local, where they investigate the ocean. They are then taken by Crunchy on his boat to get a closer look at an odd formation of rocks where boats have been breached over the years. They are abruptly confronted by Motoshondu and crash into the formation of jagged rocks, and their boat sinks. They are saved by Sharky in his helicopter.

The gang decides to investigate the island and visit Aqua Land. There, they meet marine biologist Maura Ravenmane, who explains to them about the wildlife in the waters and how she protects the animals, especially turtles. She claims that being on water would make her seasick. Meanwhile, Shaggy and Scooby become friendly with an orca as they have lunch.

When trying to find "Crunchy," they discover his shack empty. But Velma discovers a life jacket with the name Charles Granville, and Fred finds a large television screen in the back projecting images of fish and sea life swimming around. They find a dingy missing and come to the conclusion that he probably went out to confront the monster by himself and would probably be in a lot of danger.

So, the gang sets out with some high-tech equipment acquired from Maura to try to find "Crunchy." Velma is keen to point out that she didn't come. Motoshondu appears once again and breaks their boat. The gang is forced to investigate underwater with their gear and equipment, which Shaggy and Scooby are reluctant to do.

While exploring underwater, the gang stumbles upon a shipwreck graveyard, likely caused by the treacherous rocks. Fred devises a plan utilizing the wrecked boats. However, due to the monster's enormous size, they're unable to capture her and are forced to return to the surface. Motoshondu is violently beached on a massive wave. Upon unmasking, the creature reveals himself to be Charles Granville, aka "Crunchy," who had been employing a submarine-like vehicle to frighten people away and protect the sea turtles' mating grounds from human harm, as Velma observes.

Just as the gang is about to unwind and enjoy their vacation at the timeshare villa, their relaxation plans are disrupted by the arrival of a family of four, who are also booked to stay in the villa as part of a timeshare arrangement. The gang is consequently forced to vacate the premises.

Notes/trivia[]

  • This episode's title is a parody of the well-known tongue twister, "She sells seashells by the seashore."
  • At no time during this episode does the gang wear their normal outfits, as they spend most of the episode in their beach clothing. For instance, Daphne was barefoot and wearing her bikini from Scooby-Doo! and the Legend of the Vampire and sarong for most of the episode, except when she and the gang wore scuba gear and wetsuits.
  • Shaggy, Fred and Daphne were barefoot for the entire episode, even away from the beach.
  • The Mystery Machine is not in this episode.
  • Daphne's surfboard has the same colour scheme and pattern as the Mystery Machine.
  • The gang discovers an underwater graveyard of ships, which resembles the scene in the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episode, A Clue for Scooby Doo.
  • The Motoshondu's mechanical innards resemble the inside of the Monster in the later released direct-to-video film, Scooby-Doo! and the Loch Ness Monster.
  • Midway through the episode, the audience is given a clue as to the answer to the mystery: when the Big Blue Mama goes airborne, his arched, solid bottom is visible, proving the images the Gang has been seeing on the “glass bottom” were faked.
  • Unlike most culprits, Crunchy's motive is benevolent as he sought to protect an endangered species.

Miscellaneous[]

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • When the monster snaps Fred's lasso and he and Velma fall into the sea, Daphne comes to them on her jet ski and she is shown to be in full scuba gear. But when the shot changes and the camera switches to above, all of her scuba gear is gone; including her flippers.
    • Another mistake occurs when the lasso is broken. As Fred and Velma fall, the rope, rather than falling as well, hangs in mid-air for a second and then disappears.
  • In the "Rockaway Beach" chase scene, Velma goes from not having her glasses in distance shots to a close-up with her wearing her glasses. The next time she's seen in the chase scene, her glasses are gone again.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • Velma is able to locate things near her without her glasses before diving, despite not being able to tell the difference between Scooby and Motoshondu underwater after her goggles were knocked off by the sea turtle.

Quotes[]

Velma: Jinkies, my goggles. Scooby, can you help me find my prescription goggles?

Shaggy: OK, OK, I got about as far as "The monster is a mini-sub" before you, like, totally lost me!
Velma: It's simple. Crunchy is an ecology extremist. He wanted to protect the turtles mating grounds and he used the monster to do it.
Shaggy: Hey, I thought Professor Ravenmane was the big turtle lover.
Professor Ravenmane: I am. (Stink Eye and Crunchy step aside, and Professor Ravenmane appears) But no legitimate member of the Conservation Community would condone this dangerous and irresponsible behavior.
Fred: Besides, we knew that Maura couldn't be the monster. She'd get seasick.

Crunchy: And if it weren't for you meddling mainlanders, I'd have gotten away with it, too.
