Seancé is the fourth episode of the second season of Velma.

Premise[]

Lamont has put Norville and his friends in a Saturday morning detention - hoping to evoke a Breakfast Club moment. He then uses cameras placed around the school, for a Japanese reality show, to spy on them. The teens, however, decide to hold a seance instead as Daphne, Amber and Fred believe Norville is genuinely being haunted by the ghost of Victoria Jones.

Synopsis[]

Velma, Daphne, Norville, Amber, Fred, Gigi, and Olive arrive at school for their Saturday morning detention. Velma expresses disapproval of Daphne's conversion to Wicca. As the students go to the library for their detention, Aman tours the school, envisioning the days of his adolescence. Lamont, also wanting to fulfill his nostalgic fantasies, bases the detention on The Breakfast Club and watches the students via surveillance footage. Meanwhile, Aman tours the school and finds the school newspaper room, where he finds an article reminding him of the time he got his first internship at a law firm.

After a brief discussion, the students decide to hold a seance to communicate with Victoria's ghost, as they believe Norville is possessed by her. Velma, not believing in Amber's witchcraft, agrees to perform the seance to prove it is not real. After distracting Lamont from watching the surveillance footage, they gather items needed for the ritual. Velma gathers Bunsen burners from the chemistry laboratory to use as candles, and Fred finds a locket that belonged to Victoria. However, Lamont is caught by Blythe, who sends him to detention with the students while she watches them. Lamont explains to the students that his detention during childhood was fun, but fainted after smoking and missed the other events that happened in the detention room.

Lamont decides to distract Blythe from the other students by performing a legendary dive from Back to School. However, he fails at performing the dive and lands headfirst on the hard pool deck, injuring himself. While Blythe treats his injuries, she reveals to him the truth about the detention, revealing it was not as fun as Lamont remembered it. In truth, Aman fell from a statue and broke it, and to avoid being expelled for vandalism, he instead faked an injury and sued the school for negligence. While he won the case, he developed guilt from abusing the law.

Meanwhile, Velma and Daphne attempt to perform the seance. However, the seance fails to summon Victoria because of Velma's "negative energy," as Velma is only participating to prove it does not work. Daphne convinces Velma that spirits exist, pointing to a spiritual encounter she experienced during a Beyoncé concert. So, instead of conducting a seance, Daphne convinces her to perform a celebration of that spiritual encounter, which she calls a seancé. Reciting the lyrics to Beyoncé's song Haunted, paranormal events suddenly occur; lights flicker and wind blows objects around the room. Fred discovers an inscription on the locket, stating that Victoria did not love anything or anyone. Velma throws a book at what she believes is the ghost, but is, in reality, Amber.

Velma accuses Amber of staging the paranormal encounter, explaining that the lights flickering and wind can be easily faked with the electrical box and air conditioning unit. When Daphne comes to Amber's defense, Velma lambasts her for continuing to believe them, calling her an "idiot who ignores facts and science," though she instantly regrets her words. However, Blythe interrupts their argument and sends the students home, concluding detention.

Fred, picked up by William and Diya, finally accepts that Victoria is not the loving woman he believed her to be. Velma attempts to gain Daphne's forgiveness, but Daphne still refuses to speak with her. Lamont, helping Norville return the Bunsen burners to the laboratory, decides to stop attempting to relive the past with his fantasies. However, Norville notices a file in Mr. S' desk. The file has the name "Dane Dupree" highlighted as one of the staff members of the Crystal Cove Insane Asylum, an anagram of "Edna Perdue." This indicates that Perdue may be alive.
