Scroogey Doo is the tenth episode of season 2 of Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, and the thirty-sixth overall.

Premise[]

In 1843, three ghosts come to scare Ebenezer Scrooge, which leads the Velma of that era to question her dedication to a life of mystery solving.

Synopsis[]

Around the year 1843, Mystery Inc. visits London so Velma could speak at the Science and Reason Symposium. There, they meet moneylender Ebenezer Scrooge to exchange their money for British currency. They meet Scrooge's overworked clerk, Bob Cratchit, who has six children. Upstairs, they meet Scrooge, who claims he was attacked by the ghost of his late business partner, Jacob Marley. As Mystery Inc. begins to investigate the ghosts, they meet Scrooge's maid, Ms. Blackwhite, and doctor, Dr. Buggly.

While searching for clues, they encounter the Ghost of Christmas Past. Though the ghost attacks them, she speaks personally to Velma, though no one else can hear her. The ghost shows Velma a scene from her childhood, in which she was about to solve some of the world's greatest problems. However, she chose to join Mystery Inc. instead, giving up a career as an innovator to investigate crimes. The ghost tries to convince Velma that she wasted her potential for the "spirit of mystery." In the present day, Velma discovers that the ghost also appeared to Scrooge to convince him that he threw away his lover to pursue money.

While investigating further, they found that Cratchit begged Scrooge to give him money so he could treat his son, Tiny Tim's, illness. However, Scrooge has refused, only paying for his own health. While outside, Velma encounters the Ghost of Christmas Present. She finds that Velma, being concerned with investigating the ghosts, has missed the symposium. The ghost tries to convince Velma that the other members of Mystery Inc. are selfish and did not care about her passions, only using her intellect to solve mysteries for the sake of the "spirit of mystery." In the real world, Fred discards a coin, not knowing it is a clue, and the Ghost of Christmas Present attacks Mystery Inc.

After escaping the ghost, Velma denounces Mystery Inc., believing the ghosts that she was wasting her potential by being in the gang. She encounters the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, who shows her a scene of the future, in which Mystery Inc., now elderly, unmasks Velma as a culprit. The future Velma was angry that she wasted her potential, so she turned to crime as revenge against Mystery Inc. Velma, horrified by the scene, begs the ghost to stop, pledging to change her ways. However, in the real world, she helps Mystery Inc. capture the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come just before it could attack Scrooge.

The ghosts are revealed to be disguises used by Dr. Buggly. Buggly wanted to convince Scrooge to give Cratchit money so he could pay for Tiny Tim's illness. He used hypnotism to simulate the ghost encounters, convincing Scrooge to change his miserly ways. However, he also used the attacks in an attempt to convince Velma to stop investigating, telling her she is wasting her potential. He learned hypnotism from Gubmah Hab, whose name was on the coin that Fred discarded.

Velma speaks at the symposium, explaining how she solved the mystery, and receives a standing ovation. She realizes she can be both a loyal investigator in Mystery Inc. while also pursuing her own interests as a scientist. She also realizes that Mystery Inc., despite what the Ghost of Christmas Present said, helped Velma gain the confidence to speak at the symposium. However, because Mystery Inc. foiled Buggly's plans, Scrooge never changes his ways. As such, Tiny Tim never receives the medical treatment he needs.

Notes/trivia[]

  • This is the second Christmas special of the series, after Scary Christmas.
  • The illnesses Dr. Buggly diagnosed Scrooge with included "Chapped Lipititus" (chapped lips), "Hypogenerosia" (being less than normally generous) and "trypophobia" (an aversion to the sight of irregular patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps).
  • This episode was aired one day after the death of Heather North.
  • This is a rare episode in which Velma poses as bait for a trap instead of Shaggy and Scooby.

Miscellaneous[]

  • Disguises: None.
  • Traps: Velma sleeps in Scrooge's bed to lure the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, then Mystery Inc. subdues it.
  • Clues: A coin with the name Gubmuh Hab inscribed on it.

Cultural references[]

  • The title is a combination of Scrooge and Scooby-Doo's name.
  • The episode is a retelling of Charles Dickens's novel A Christmas Carol.
  • Daphne holds a coin that says "Gubmuh Hab" on it. "Gubmuh Hab" is explained as being "bah humbug" spelt backwards, which is a reference to Scrooge's famous line, "Bah Humbug."

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • When Velma was explaining Dr. Buggly's motives in Latvia and talking about Gubmah Hab, she is briefly seen wearing modern clothes.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • The future shown to Velma by the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is one where the Wright Brothers invent the airplane many decades later. However, as the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is the disguise of a human, he could not have known about the Wright Brothers inventing the airplane.

Quotes[]

Scooby-Doo: I'm 455 dog years old.

Future Velma: (Unmasked as the monster)
Yes, it's true. I could have changed the world but there never was time for my dreams. I wasted my life solving mysteries. Too many people got credit for things I invented. I had the idea for the airplane twenty years ago! And I would have destroyed the Wright Brothers precious plane if it wasn't for you meddling really old people!

Dr Buggly: If you kids hadn't meddled, he'd be doing good in the world.
Bob Cratchit: Wonderful work kids, you've doomed us all.
