Scooby-Doo, Where Are You Now! is an hour-long television special that aired on The CW celebrating the fifty-second anniversary of Scooby-Doo.

Premise[]

The gang talks about their favorite cases and how they were filmed in the Warner Bros. studios, but the backlot has its own monster problem. While solving the mystery, the gang celebrates the legacy of the franchise.

Synopsis[]

Mystery, Inc. arrive at the Warner Bros. Studio to film a "reunion" special, though Velma notes they've never actually been apart. An interview with Janel Parrish is intercut with greetings to the gang by other animated characters and interviews with both live action characters and real people discussing the franchise.

The studio experiences a brief blackout and a spooky presence; Janel calls the producer, Bryn, who claims it's a simple "electrical problem" and quickly moves on to the rest of the reunion special, including a reel of awkward auditions in which the gang "hadn't quite nailed [their] characters just yet." Scooby's vocal coach, Bram Penobscot, recalls working with Scooby to make his voice less human and more dog-like.

Janel tries to ask the gang about Scrappy-Doo, but their discussion is interrupted by the appearance of the Snow Ghost, a live action monster apparently modeled on the cartoon character. Bryn admits that she asked the gang to come to the studio as the Snow Ghost has been terrorizing them all week, shutting down all of the productions. Scooby, Shaggy, and Velma are initially reluctant to investigate, but Scooby and Shaggy are convinced after learning the ghost has ransacked the snack table, while Velma finds it preferable to meeting Scooby's heretofore unknown illegitimate children, as Janel planned.

Weird Al Yankovic fondly recalls his time with the gang, but says that they partied too hard for him, particularly Velma. Olivia Liang recalls training Shaggy during her time as a martial arts instructor. Velma visits Carter in Warner Bros.' costume department to look for clues; he shows her a matchbook labeled "Bungalow 15" that he found after a costume was stolen. Meanwhile, Daphne and Fred investigate near the Gilmore Girls set, where they meet Captain Caveman, with whom Daphne has an upcoming date. They find a loudspeaker, which Fred suspects is a clue, despite Daphne's doubts.

Lazlo recounts being cast as the sixth member of Mystery Inc., a mechanic who would repair the Mystery Machine when it broke down, and learning at the show's world premiere that she had been cut from the series. She says that she's now happily employed as a roadkill collector. The Snow Ghost chases Shaggy and Scooby through the props department.

Arlo Davidsonman discusses being Scooby's spit-bucket handler; the bucket he shows is labeled "Bungalow 15." Fred crafts an elaborate trap for the Snow Ghost under the Warner Bros. water tower, involving Shaggy and Scooby dressing as characters from the Banana Splits, as "anyone who lays eyes on them can't help but chase them." They successfully trap the ghost, and Bryn unmasks it to reveal Lazlo, whom none of them recognize, though Velma mistakes her for an extra from season one. After Lazlo's prompting, Daphne remembers that she was cut because "the test audiences hated" her.

Lazlo explains that she intended to terrorize the studios to scare the productions into taking their business elsewhere, then when that plan failed, she simply tried to ruin the reunion special, which she considers a success. Bryn counters that she made the special more exciting than the "lame" and "awkward" games and interviews Bryn had planned. Daphne and Velma explain that Lazlo made her voice appear to be coming from all around the sets using loudspeakers, and appeared and disappeared using movie magic. Velma admits to being confused by the "Bungalow 15" clues, but Bryn explains that it's the title of an upcoming movie that has been giving away promotional swag.

Janel calls security to take away Lazlo, then cues DJ Teen Titan to play the What's New, Scooby-Doo? theme for a finale dance party including Bryn, the Snow Ghost, the security guards, The Great Gazoo, and Captain Caveman.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • In the Unmasking memories, it says that Al the Drug Smuggler was unmasked in 1990, when it was actually 1988. Likewise, Mitchell from the Gas Station was supposedly unmasked in 2014, when it was actually 2015.
  • László is a Hungarian men's name, but Lazlo is a woman, played by an actor of Italian descent.
  • Lazlo is supposedly a character from the series, yet she's live action rather than a cartoon like the gang.

Quotes[]

Fred: Well, here we are. Warner Bros. studios, home of Hanna-Barbera.
Daphne: They've shot so many great reunion specials here. Now we get to have our own reunion special!
Velma: But how is it a reunion if we haven't spent a day apart in 52 years?

Daphne: Hey Velma, remember when we shot the scene where you lost your glasses? It was right over there.
Shaggy: And then that other scene when you lost them again, over there. And over there...
(clips of Velma losing her glasses)
Velma: Okay, I get it! Velma's thing is she's always losing her glasses. I only wear them because they make me look cool.

Tony Cervone: The characters really are archetypes, you know, like Fred is the muscle, and Daphne is the heart, and Velma is the brain, and – and Scooby and Shaggy are the stomach!

Tom Sito: One of Joe Barbera's maxims was "If you ain't got a big, sloppy dog, you ain't got comedy."

Bryn: Next week we're filming the Friends Reunion reunion. The fans really miss those characters from the original Friends Reunion.

Janel Parrish: But I'd like to get serious for a moment and talk about... Scrappy-Doo. (the gang groans)
Velma: Ay-ay-ay...
Scooby-Doo: Really?!
Velma: Oh boy.
Daphne: Yeah, more like Scrappy-Don't!
Fred: You know, Scrappy wasn't really part of the gang...
Scooby-Doo: Yeah!
Shaggy: He started saying these horrible things about Scooby in these AOL chat rooms.

Scooby-Doo: (with a pronounced speech impediment) Yeah, exit stage left.
Bryn: Whoa-whoa-whoa, watch it. Snagglepuss is extremely litigious.

Batman: Good work, Scooby gang, cleansing the world of the scum that haunts America's swamps, abandoned carnivals, and manor houses. I know my good friend Bruce Wayne appreciates it too. And you did it all without the help of an elderly butler.

(The Mystery Machine sputters and stops)
Lazlo: Looks like we got a busted radiator belt. Sorry, can't fix it till tomorrow. Guess we'll have to stay in that weird old motel. What did I tell you, Fred? You gotta stop riding the clutch!
