Premise[]

Mystery Inc. travel to Tokyo, Japan, where they have to stop the Black Samurai from conquering the world.

Synopsis[]

In ancient Japan, a warrior asked renowned swordsmith Masamune to craft a sword of great mystical power. Masamune agreed, but he warned the warrior that the process will only take a year, and Masamune's apprentice Muramasa subsequently offered to make a similarly powerful sword in half the time, to which the warrior accepts. However, Muramasa's evil nature was imbued into his creation, the Sword of Doom, and transformed the warrior into the Black Samurai. When Masamune finished his creation, the Sword of Fate, he presented it to the Green Dragon, who fought the Black Samurai, and imprisoned him in the Sword of Doom before hiding it and marking its whereabouts within a riddle written on the Destiny Scroll.

In present-day Japan, Mr. Takagawa, the curator of a museum of ancient history in Tokyo, and Kenji, a janitor, witness an exhibit of the Black Samurai seemingly come to life. The next day, Mystery Inc. arrives at the prestigious Mirimoto Academy near Tokyo for a martial arts tournament that Daphne was invited to participate in. Upon their arrival, the gang meets Daphne's friend Miyumi, the academy's head Miss Mirimoto, Mirimoto's bodyguard Sojo, and Takagawa, who warns Mirimoto of the Black Samurai's quest to steal the Destiny Scroll. Though the warrior leads an army of ninjas in attacking the academy and seemingly steal the scroll, Mirimoto reveals he stole a copy and presents the real one to the gang.

After Shaggy and Scooby solve the riddle, Mirimoto sends the gang to find the Sword of Doom before the Black Samurai gets it. The gang reaches an uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean, where they are attacked by the island's natives and the Black Samurai's ninjas, but the gang defeats them. After retrieving the Sword of Doom and returning to Mirimoto, the Black Samurai is unmasked as Sojo, who reveals she staged the tournament to bring Mystery Inc. to Japan to help her find the Sword of Doom so she can resurrect the Black Samurai and take over the world and program the ninjas, which are revealed to be robots with the fighting styles of her tournament's competitors. Moreover, Miyumi betrays the gang to side with Mirimoto, who subsequently captures most of Mystery Inc. and Takagawa, but Daphne passes the Sword of Doom to Shaggy and Scooby, who escape on a jetpack. Though they are pursued by the robots, who steal the Sword of Doom, the pair are rescued by Matsuhiro, a sushi shop owner and samurai who agrees to train them in his ways.

Once Shaggy and Scooby complete their training, Matsuhiro sends them to the Green Dragon and the Sword of Fate to gain his help in stopping the Black Samurai once more. Meanwhile, Kenji unknowingly frees Mystery Inc. and Takagawa, who build an EMP device to stop the robots. A repentant Miyumi attempts to take the Sword of Doom, but Mirimoto retrieves it so Sojo can free the Black Samurai from it. Mirimoto attempts to control him, but the Black Samurai refuses and defeats her and Sojo before subduing the others. Soon enough, Shaggy, Scooby, and the Green Dragon arrive to fight back. With Matsuhiro's aid and the Green Dragon's power, Scooby uses the Sword of Fate to destroy the Sword of Doom, breaking the Black Samurai's curse and rendering him mortal again. Before dying, the samurai thanks Mystery Inc. for freeing him from his curse.

Sometime afterwards, the gang attends a ceremony, where a statue of Scooby was erected in honor of him saving Japan. They invite Miyumi to join them on their travels, but she declines in favor of focusing on herself.

Notes/trivia[]

  • There is no theme song in this movie.
  • Even though this film was released in 2009, it has a 2008 copyright. This suggests the movie was produced and completed in 2008, around the same time as Scooby-Doo! and the Goblin King, but was pushed back so Goblin King could be released in time for Halloween.
  • This is the final DTV movie to be released with Casey Kasem voicing Shaggy; it is also his final time voicing Shaggy altogether.
  • This is the final Scooby-Doo production animated in the same style as What's New, Scooby-Doo?.
  • This is the final direct-to-video film series to having animation service and produced by Lotto Animation. Subsequent releases would be produced by Digital eMation.
  • Daphne's martial art skills are finally displayed in full.
  • The plot by Miss Mirimoto is very similar to Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost, released ten years before. Mirimoto and Ben Ravencroft staged a mystery to attract the gang to find an artifact of power, only to have the summoned spirit turn on the summoner.
  • When Shaggy, Scooby, Daphne, and Velma each say their catchphrase in a row, Fred retorts how he still doesn't have one. Later on, however, he would say "Hold the phone" for a while (which was incorporated from Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated).
  • This is the last direct-to-video movie to have the Zooming Hanna-Barbera logo at the end of the film.
  • This is one of the few times where Shaggy and Scooby are willing to save the day from a villain.
    • This is also marks the first time Shaggy and Scooby used actual weapons and engaged in battle face-to-face with the villain in the final showdown.
  • Miss Mirimoto and Miyumi's names are a case of artistic license since such names do not exist in the Japanese language.
    • Real-life Japanese names which are nonetheless similar to them are Morimoto and Mayumi.

Miscellaneous[]

Cultural references[]

  • The story of Hachikō by the Shibuya Station is real.
  • The tale involving Muramasa and Masamune is based on Japanese mythology.

  • The gauntlet of booby traps in the cave contains some visual references to Raiders of the Lost Ark.
  • Scooby and Shaggy riding the Green Dragon in flight from Mount Fuji to Tokyo is similar to Chihiro riding on Haku's back in his dragon form in the Japanese anime movie Spirited Away.
  • Shaggy saying "there's a party in my stomach" is a reference to "Yo Gabba Gabba".
  • Miss Mirimoto bears a resemblance to Avatar's Azula, voiced by Grey DeLisle.
  • The Black Samurai resembled Bishamon from Darkstalkers, albiet with an inverted color scheme.
