Daphne, Velma, Shaggy and Scooby arrive at Fred's home, worried about the number of net traps he has installed. As they ring the doorbell they are ensnared by a new one. They confront Fred about his net obsession, which he denies - just as a cupboard opens and covers him with nets. He finally realizes he does have a problem. Velma says that Fred needs to get away from nets for a while, and Daphne has the solution. She has been invited by her uncle Sandy to his new beach resort in Florida.
  +
  +
As the Gang arrive at the resort, everyone sees that it is decorated with a large number of nets. This starts triggering Fred's obsession, but Velma says that Fred should concentrate on not touching any of them. Uncle Sandy greets Daphne and welcomes them all and Shaggy notices that the resort is named after Daphne's uncle. Sandy says it's a complete coincidence - he didn't do it on purpose. As he continues talking, almost everything he says includes the word "net", which puts Fred even more on edge. He finally breaks when the woman checking them in introduces herself as Annette, prompting Fred to exclaim "You're not a net, you're a person. You're not a net, you're not a net!", and then run screaming from the lobby.
  +
  +
Daphne and Velma check in, allowing Scooby and Shaggy to look for a welcome buffet. As they look around, Scooby notices Shauna, a dog belonging to Kiki Brownstone. They are somewhat attracted to each other - Shauna blows Scooby a kiss and he waves back.
  +
  +
Fred runs back into the lobby, and Velma worries his panic is net related, but he is actually running from the Beach Beastie, which bursts through the doors and takes the form of a shark. It attacks and steals a woman's brooch, while taking other forms including a three-headed Hydra. When Shauna looks threatened Scooby moves to protect her, but when Fred throws a net at it the net passes straight through. Velma has an idea, and she and Daphne try to cut off the flow of water by closing the glass doors. Realizing what they are doing, the Beastie retreats back outside to the ocean.
  +
  +
Fred has an epiphany in the wake of his failure to snare the Beastie - nets can't do everything. He swears off nets for good. As he walks away Daphne realizes Scooby isn't with them. Shaggy spots him with Shauna, and in a fit of jealousy declares that she will break his heart.
  +
  +
Daphne talks to Uncle Sandy and he tells her this is the third attack - and also part of the reason he invited her to the resort, asking for the Gang's help. Shaggy tries to distract Scooby from Shauna with food. An offer of one Scooby Snack is ignored, but Scooby accepts an offer of two - and gives them both to Shauna. Kiki and her husband, Grafton finally return for Shauna, leaving Scooby with an angry and bewildered Shaggy.
  +
  +
In Uncle Sandy's office, the Gang get information about the attacks - they all involved the theft of jewellery. He tells them some people think it is Malcom La Rouge, an infamous pirate. La Rouge supposedly buried his treasure where the resort now stands, but the locals caught him, and dug it up. They also sunk his ship which he went down with, swearing revenge. His lust for jewels has lived on, bringing the water to life as the Beastie. Or maybe the man who owns the resort next door is faking the monster and trying to run him out of business. Uncle Sandy also theorizes that maybe he is behind it, and wants the insurance money - he never really trusted himself... Shaggy theorizes that Uncle Sandy is crazy!
  +
  +
The Gang split up to look for clues, but Scooby abandons Shaggy when Shauna appears. Fred and Daphne are on the beach, but Fred is preoccupied with nets rather than finding clues. Daphne tries to find a place with no nets, but beach volleyball and beach badminton both involve nets. They go towards a restaurant, but the delivery truck has a picture of a net on the side, and Fred again runs off panicked when he sees a woman wearing fishnet stockings.
  +
  +
Velma checks out Uncle Sandy's competition, and talks to the owner, Kurt. He reveals his business has been booming since the Beastie started attacking Uncle Sandy's resort. He shills the attractions at his resort, including Aquatica, a dancing water show that is currently closed for repairs. He is annoyed at how long it is taking Brownstone Industries to finish the repairs.
  +
  +
Shaggy is having lunch on the beach and offers a handful of shrimp to Scooby - who we see is actually a sand sculpture. Shauna's owner, Kiki arrives and the two talk. She doesn't know why she is still here, and she can't convince her husband to leave, even after the Beastie attacks. They both cry once they realize how lonely they currently are - all Kiki has to keep her company is her priceless diamond necklace. In the wake of the latest attack, Velma finds something unusual - and wonders if it is hair gel.
  +
  +
The Gang regroup to discuss the clues they have discovered, and Velma starts putting some of them together. She goes to her computer and starts a search. That night the gang are at a luau, where Uncle Sandy shows an instruction videotape about doing the Limbo. However, the Beastie soon attacks, in the form of an octopus. It follows Scooby, Shaggy, Kiki and Shauna, and tries to steal Kiki's diamond necklace. The rest of the Gang arrive, brandishing torches. Fred questions using them against a water monster, just as the Beastie extinguishes them. Shaggy throws a trashcan lid at the Beastie, and it bounces off. It follows Shaggy, and Velma takes the opportunity to borrow Kiki's necklace and use it as bait.
  +
  +
Velma gets the Beastie's attention and it follows them. Unfortunately, she was hoping Fred and Daphne would have come up with a plan to catch it - but they hadn't. The three of them try to hide in a water ride, but the Beastie quickly finds them. Scooby and Shaggy help them escape and as the monster reforms Velma notices something inside it. They run away and Velma tells Fred they need a net. Fred tells the others to meet him on the beach and races off, looking for one.
  +
  +
Fred goes back to the now deserted luau, grabs the videotape, and starts to make a net out of it. On the beach, the rest of the Gang is running from the Beastie. Fred turns up and tells them to lure it under the tree his is in. Velma lures it with Kiki's pendant, and Fred drops the net, this time catching the monster. The Beastie is revealed to be Kiki's husband Grafton, who was using a suit that manipulates water using water jets and magnetic gel. The reason Fred's first attempt to catch it with a net failed was because he didn't hit the suit at the monster's core.
  +
  +
Grafton used his company's technology, while Aquatica was being repaired, to steal his wife's pendant. He had previously stolen it to bail out his failing company, and realized he needed to steal the replacement before Kiki discovered it was a fake. The other thefts were just cover for this last heist. Grafton is arrested and Kiki stands by him, and leaves taking Shauna with her. Scooby is heartbroken and apologizes to Shaggy for ignoring him all this time. Shaggy forgives Scooby and cheers him up with a two for one coupon at the Grand Sandy Candy store.

Scooby-Doo! and the Beach Beastie is the sixth direct-to-video short film based upon Hanna-Barbera's Scooby-Doo Saturday morning cartoons. It was released on DVD on May 5, 2015.

Premise

Mystery Inc. head to Florida for a vacation at a resort owned by Daphne's uncle Sandy. However, while they try to cure Fred of his net obsession they face a shape-shifting sea monster.

Synopsis

A old man is searching a beach with a metal detector. Just as he finds a diamond ring he is attacked by a monster, apparently made of water, the Beach Beastie.

Fred has an epiphany in the wake of his failure to snare the Beastie - nets can't do everything. He swears off nets for good. As he walks away Daphne realizes Scooby isn't with them. Shaggy spots him with Shauna, and in a fit of jealousy declares that she will break his heart.

Uncle Sandy also theorizes that maybe he is behind it, and wants the insurance money - he never really trusted himself... Shaggy theorizes that Uncle Sandy is crazy!

Cultural references

  • The working title was Beach Blanket Beastie, a play on Beach Blanket Bingo (1965), an entry in the Beach Party series of films starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. The character Annette may be a reference to this film, in addition to a pun that upsets Fred.

Continuity

Notes/trivia

  • Shaggy calls Scooby by his full name, which is 'Scoobert von Dooenheimer'.
  • Almost two years before its scheduled release date, Matthew Lillard made a post on Twitter and Instagram about it having his favorite line of Shaggy's, with a shot of the line from the script itself.[2][3]
    • Lillard also referred to it as Beach Blanket Beastie, which seems to have been its name at the time.
  • Warner's online ads claimed a Digital HD release would happen on the same day of the DVD it was included on (see below), but it has yet to be added to either iTunes or Amazon.
  • Fred's mansion looks quite similar to the Jones mansion from Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated.
    • Furthermore, the trap activated by ringing the bell could be a reference to a similar trap Fred used in The Creeping Creatures.
  • The whole plotline of the gang going to a resort owned by one of Daphne's uncles is similar to the plot of Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster.
  • The music during the exposition after the unmasking is from Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated.
  • The idea of the gang going to a resort somehow related to Daphne because Fred needs a break was later reused in a Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! episode Some Fred Time.
  • This was Adam West's last appearance in Scooby-Doo before his death two years later.

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches

  • None known.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities

  • Scooby's full name has already been clearly established as just Scoobert Doo, yet Shaggy addresses him as 'Scoobert von Dooenheimer'. This may hint at a planned retcon which was never implemented, or perhaps was just a throwaway gag.

Quotes

Shaggy: So, like, you named the resort after yourself?
Uncle Sandy: What? No. (sees a sign with the resort's name) Oh, right! It's the Grand Sandy, and my name is Sandy. Oh my gosh, what a coincidence. I can't believe I never noticed that before.

Annette: Hello, I'm Annette.
Fred: You're not a net. You're a person. You're not a net. You're not a net! (screams and runs off)

Velma: (to Fred and Daphne) Okay, so what's the plan?
Fred: What?!
Daphne: We thought you had a plan!
Velma: I did! It was "get the monster's attention and then hope Daphne and Fred could come up with a plan."
