Scooby-Doo! Haunted Holidays is the second in a series of direct-to-video short films based upon Hanna-Barbera's Scooby-Doo Saturday morning cartoons. It was released on October 16, 2012.

Premise[]

Scooby-Doo and the gang participate in a Menkle's Toy Store's holiday parade where they discover the abandoned haunted clock tower with a troubled past. A sinister snowman haunts the streets and accompanied with a large blizzard, threatens to close down the toy store for good.

Synopsis[]

Fireworks burst over a parade in front of Menkle's Toy Store. A brass band precedes Santa's float, as it passes the store. Daphne and Velma are on the float dressed as Santa's elves, and throwing candy to the enthusiastic crowd. Fred is standing with the store's owner, Havros Menkle and his nephew, Fabian. Havros is worried about his store as sales are down and he might lose everything. Fabian apologizes to Fred for his uncle's abrupt behavior, explaining it's the stress of the situation.

Shaggy and Scooby are in the crowd, and call to Velma to throw them some candy. Shaggy catches his, but Scooby misses the candy cane thrown to him, and it lands in the yard of a creepy old mansion. The lure of the candy is enough to get them into the yard, but as they pass a snowman it turns to look at them. Scooby grabs the cane and the pair swallow a large heap of food in one gulp. Shaggy thinks the growling he hears is his stomach but it is the snowman, threatening them with three mouths holding sharp icicle teeth. The pair race out of the yard with the snowman following, and the chase disrupts the parade.

The snowman exhales a blizzard, that causes character balloons to fly away and parts of the float to break off. It hits Scooby with a blast and encases him in ice. Shaggy runs back to save him, and Fabian ushers Mystery Inc. and Santa into the store and locks the doors. The snowman recedes into the blizzard and Shaggy frees Scooby by shattering the ice. Fabian calls it the Sinister Snowman, and says with it outside they will have to close the store.

As Fabian walks away the actor playing Santa complains to the Gang about the role. He is sick of the waving at kids and being jolly every year. He opens the door and walks out into the blizzard until he can no longer be seen, stating he was "the voice of Dignity Smurf". A loud growl , followed by the actor telling something to stay away from him is heard, and then silence. Reluctantly, Fred closes and re-locks the store doors.

The Gang take the lift to see Havros, and get out in the clock tower - which is full of frozen elf figures. They find Havros' office but he just tells them to get out and closes his door. Fabian walks up and again apologizes for his uncle's behavior. The store's cleaner, Clete, walks up to them and says they are stuck here because of the blizzard, the phones are dead, no one is coming to save them and they need to watch their backs. He walks away as abruptly as he arrived.

Fabian then tells the gang about Vladimar Harstikor and the curse of the Sinister Snowman. Harstikor used to live in the mansion over the road and wanted to be left alone. However, when the toy store opened with it's giant glockenspiel he became bitter and in a snowstorm he and his evil soul transformed into the snowman - 20 years ago today. That night, the glockenspiel stopped and has never worked since. Fabian is sure Vladimar has possessed his uncle and the curse will destroy the toy store.

The Gang head out into the blizzard to investigate the old mansion. They split up and in the attic, Fred finds some fireworks, and asks Daphne if he can keep them. She tells him no as they both notice canisters of silver iodide nearby. Shaggy and Scooby check out the basement - where Shaggy finds some toy train tracks and they encounter the snowman. They run and it shapeshifts, scuttling after them like a spider. Velma, searching nearby finds a postcard, but a fleeing Shaggy and Scooby run into her, knocking off her glasses. The three run away and find Daphne and Fred, and all of them flee from the mansion.

The Gang strategize with Fabian, as his uncle and Clete secretly watch them via closed circuit TV. Havros tells Clete to "finish this". Shaggy and Scooby are disguised as toy soldiers and blend into the giant ones in the store. They spot evidence the Snowman is in the store, and tell the others who are in the lift on the way to the boiler room. However, when the lift doors open the Snowman is waiting and encases Fred, Daphne and Velma in ice.

Shaggy can't raise Fred on their walkie talkies and they are quickly found by the Snowman. It chases them but they lose it and arrive at Santa's village - where they are surprized to find Santa. The Snowman then chases the three through the toys. Santa grabs a remote control car and tells "Norville" to save his friend. Shaggy uses the car to help Scooby escape. They lure the Snowman into the stairwell, where they go up to the clock tower. Santa bolts the door behind them, but the Snowman freezes it and threatens to breaks through. Santa thinks they can attract help if he can get the glockenspiel working, and starts repairs.

Fred struggles to free Daphne, Velma and himself from the ice and manages to get the lift doors to repeatedly close on it. The ice finally shatters, freeing them and they set off to find Shaggy and Scooby. Santa has finished his repairs and starts the glockenspiel, just as the snowman, who has finally broken through the door, attacks him. But when the snow clears Santa has disappeared, and the glockenspiel is working. The sound of the bells enrages the Snowman, who chases Scooby and Shaggy around the working display. As the Snowman is about to catch them, a mechanical elf tries to hit the large bell, but the Snowman's head is in the way. As the clock strikes 12 the Snowman collapses from repeated blows.

The rest of the Gang arrive in time to unmask the Snowman - who is revealed to be Fabian. Havros and Clete arrive, with the police. Havros explains that Fabian has been stealing money from the store - the reason he has been acting strangely. Once they discovered this he sent Clete to get the authorities. Fabian wanted to get rid of his uncle and sell the store for the money.

Fabian used silver iodide in the firework rockets to cause the snowstorm and liquid nitrogen to make the Snowman's freezing breath. The first appearance of the Snowman, when Fabian was with them, was done by running the Snowman on train tracks. Ice nanites allowed the Snowman to shapeshift. And Vladimir didn't turn into the Snowman - the postcard Velma found reveals he moved to Miami beach.

Fabian is arrested any taken away by the police. Velma asks how Scooby and Shaggy got the glockenspiel to work, and Scooby says it was the actor playing Santa. However, they then see the actor, tied up in a dumpster blaming the snowman for putting him there. They look up to see Santa's sleigh flying away.

The next day, the Toy Store is festooned with Christmas lights and the working glockenspiel is entertaining the crowd. Inside the store it's business as usual, and Havros thanks the Gang for their help. Daphne, Velma and Fred are dressed as elves, and in Santa's Village, elf Shaggy is assisting Scooby, who is dressed as Santa.

Continuity[]

Notes/trivia[]

  • The opening sequence, while similar to previous DTVs and specials, has the gang based on how they looked in Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated; Daphne even has purple eyes. Velma however is missing her bows.
  • A couple of scenes uses the background music of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, including the exposition after the unmasking.
  • The gang wear their original winter clothing introduced in the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episode, That's Snow Ghost.
  • The Santa actor saying he "studied under the great Sunderman" is a reference to casting and voice director Collette Sunderman.
  • Fred, Shaggy and Velma are given the code names Ascot One/Ascot Boy, Fuzzface and Glasses Girl, respectively.
  • "Fred" is revealed to be a nickname of "Frederick".
  • The scene where Shaggy moves Scooby around in the remote-control toy car is a reference to the theme song of The New Scooby-Doo Movies (Scooby hits some toys and then spins around).

Cultural references[]

  • The score includes elements of several Christmas songs, including "We Wish You a Merry Christmas", "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas" and "Deck the Halls".
  • A Bugs Bunny toy sits atop the bunny plushes.
  • Santa Claus appears as a magical, omniscient figure.

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • Velma isn't wearing gloves in the close-up shot as she reads the postcard, but she is in the next shot when Scooby and Shaggy crash into her.
  • Scooby's Santa gloves at the end are brown, then a second later tan.
  • In the credits, Fabian Menkle's name appears as "Fabian Men".

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • Right after the snowman's first attack, the opening credits are shown, and within those 30 seconds, a blizzard has occurred.
  • The characters consistently refer to the bells and automata in the toy store's clock as "the glockenspiel". Although that is the word in German, in English a glockenspiel is a percussion instrument similar to a xylophone, whereas the machine seen in the episode is called a carillon.
  • Fred has to push a button to close the elevator doors and break the ice. In reality, elevator doors close automatically a short time after they open.
  • Daphne is in a different pose immediately after Fred breaks the ice.

Quotes[]

Santa actor: Oh, I hate Christmas!
Shaggy: Old dude, like, that is so wrong.
Scooby: Yeah, Christmas is wonderful!
Santa actor: I'm an actor. I hate it! Every year I gotta ride that float and wave and be happy and jolly and say, "Ho-ho-ho." Oh, makes me sick. I am so outta here.
Shaggy: No, wait!
Scooby: Don't go out there!
Santa actor: (opens the doors and walks out into the blizzard) I was the voice of Dignity Smurf. I studied under the great Sunderman!
Sinister Snowman: (growls)
Santa actor: No, no. Stay away from me... (screams)

Shaggy: Like, sometimes I think they keep us around because we make them look smart.
Scooby: And we eat all the leftovers.
Shaggy and Scooby: Mmmm, leftovers.
Fred: (by walkie-talkie) Will you stop talking about food and go check the basement?

(Fred and Daphne find a box of fireworks)
Fred: Hold the phone! Rockets! (excitedly) I love rockets. Can I keep 'em, Daphne? Can I? Can I?
Daphne: No, Frederick Jones, you cannot keep them; they're evidence.

Velma: My glasses – I can't see anything without my glasses. (retrieves them)
(the Sinister Snowman appears)
Velma: Now I wish I couldn't see at all!

Fabian Menkle: Yeah, well, I still would have gotten away with it if weren't for you meddling mystery solvers and your Christmas-crazy dog!
