Scary Christmas is the fourteenth episode of season 1 of Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!

Premise

Daphne just wants to be able to celebrate her birthday, which is right on Christmas Eve, while Fred is determined to solve a Christmas mystery. Unfortunately, all he can get is one with a Pterodactyl, which has nothing to do with Christmas.

Synopsis

It's Christmas time, and two boys are placing milk and cookies for Santa. One of the boys keeps asking questions about Santa. Suddenly they hear something on the roof and think it's Santa. They run upstairs and look out the window to see something on their chimney, they think its Santa, but it's actually a Pterodactyl.

The Gang is celebrating Christmas in a town called Rockwellvile, which takes its holiday celebration very seriously. Shaggy and Scooby are training to keep their metabolisms up for all the eating they do this time of year. Fred decides that they check how Daphne is doing with the mystery machine decorations. When they open the door they see Birthday decorations and Daphne yelling surprise. Daphne explains that it's her birthday, she also says that she never had a real birthday party because it was always overshadowed by Christmas. Daphne wants today to be about her birthday even though Fred explains that he brought them to the ultimate Christmas place to solve the perfect Christmas mystery and save Christmas. They gang questions Fred about his methods.

Then the 5 o'clock even news carol is heard saying that someone saw a Pterodactyl. Velma thinks the Pterodactyl has something to do with the archeological dig they saw earlier. Fred denies it saying it could have been a Ghost Reindeer until Velma points it out and it flies down and attacks. The gang rushes into the Mystery Machine and tries to drive away but the Pterodactyl grabs them and flies away with them. Fred then loses it by ejecting the luggage rack and activating airplane mode. After they land, Velma asks Fred what they should do about their non-Christmas related mystery. With Fred stating that he knows exactly what to do.

The gang visits an orphanage where a sad kid looks outside the window. Velma protests Fred's decision because she thought they were going to the archeological dig and asks how an orphanage could be connected to a Pterodactyl. So the gang visits the archaeological dig, where they see a bright light and hear a loud sound coming from the mine, they see that its actually a man named Dr. Mezmit who thinks that the gang are new volunteers and hands them digging tools. Velmas asks Dr. Mezmit what he's digging for which he explains that they found a preserved Pterodactyl nest with preserved eggs that are priceless. Unfortunately, a cave-in happened and now the nest is buried. Dr. Mezmit also says that the Mayor has also shut the archaeological dig down, then an elf named David arrives who was one of Dr. Mezmit volunteers who escaped the cave-in, he's great with machinery, but lacks confidence. David says that he tried to get more people to come and volunteer from the Christmas party, but they are all too scared to come. But Dr. Mezmit reassures David the gang is enough volunteers. However, the gang wakes away and takes off their uniforms claiming they are done here. Fred states he knows exactly where to go next.

Which is back at the orphanage, but Velma protest that it's the Mayor's Office. Fred tries to say otherwise but is sprayed in the face by Daphne with party string. Shaggy and Scooby decide to eat the big feast, so Fred makes a deal that he'll help Daphne celebrate her birthday, and Shaggy and Scooby train for the feast if they help him with the mystery. Fred helps Shaggy and Scooby by turning the Mystery Machine into a gym, which Shaggy and Scooby use to help get the gang to the Mayor's Office. While on their way their Daphne asks who wants to be the clown and then the Pterodactyl attacks.

Shaggy and Scooby try to run but it makes the Mystery Machine go too fast. The Pterodactyl then grabs a carriage and drops it in front of the Mystery Machine, it then runs right into a tour bus and flies away. At the Mayor's Office Velma asks Mayor Riker why he closed down the archeological dig, which he explains it wasn't worth the risk because Rockwellvile prides itself by celebrating Christmas and that the dig brought the Pteordacyle here. He also says that the money for the dig went to the orphanage because it was mostly on their land. He also says that every year they put a giant tree in the town square and hang a gift on it for every person in town which is a big operation. Fred states that he and the gang are here to help.

Meanwhile, Shaggy and Scooby play around with the present wrapping machine and accidentally get wrapped with a bicycle. The Mayor also says that a man named Alistair Leventhal has had to redesign the Christmas tree star three times. Fred decides they should go back to the orphanage against Velma's wishes. However, Scooby finds a trail of gift bows on the ground. Shaggy then notices that the Mystery Machine is missing and the gangs find more gift bows leading to the Pterodactyl dropping the van in two. The Pterodactyl then grabs Daphne and Scooby and flies away. With Daphne exclaiming that is the worst birthday ever. A chase scene then happens throughout Rockwellville and leads to the gang messing up the town and losing the Pterodactyl.

The gang laments on their faires with the Pterodactyl and ruining Christmas. A man then arrives an angrily demands to know what the gang did to his shop. Shaggy tries to explain the man claims he has no time for it as he has to finish making the star for the Christmas tree. This gives Fred a silver lining, he goes into the shop and says that the man is Alistair Leventhal. Shaggy likes all his Christmas work, but Allistair says he hates the holiday because he's an artist, so people pay him to make Christmas decorations. Fred wonders if the star Alistair is working on is for the tree, which he says yes as he finally got it right. Velma also adds how he redesigned the star a few times and judging by the dates he did the redesign in the past few days. Alistair claims he didn't know how big the tree was and says the Mayor will be surprised. This gives Fred and Velma an idea and the gang leaves. The Gang then decides to trap the Pterodactyl.

At the town-square, Alistair is telling the elves to put the star on right. When the star is on, the Mayor orders one of the elves to turn the turn lights on. Suddenly, the Pterodactyl appears, grabs the tree by the star, and flies away. Then the gang chases after the Pterodactyl in the Mystery Machine in airplane mode. They try to catch up but it keeps flying too fast. Daphne decides to use the birthday girls' weapon of choice: party string. It works, but then the presents begin falling out of the tree, so the gang catches them with Daphne's party sacks. But the Mystery Machine loses gas and falls out of the sky. Shaggy and Scooby keep flying using the treadmill. The Pterodactyl gets caught in Christmas decorations and the gang lands on the roof. They fall off, with all the presents landing under the tree.

The Mayor thanks the gang for catching the Pterodactyl and saving Christmas. Fred then unmasks the Pterodactyl who is revealed to be David. David was part of the volunteer team that discovered the Pterodactyl nest at the archeological dig, which included one perfectly preserved Pterodactyl egg. He also volunteered at city hall, and hid the egg by wrapping it like a present, which unfortunately got mixed up with the others. David decided he had to steal all the presents by taking the entire tree; enter the Pterodactyl. A whizz with mechanical devices, he built a working Pterodactyl that could carry off heavy objects, and only David had been at both the dig site and city hall since the cave-in. He left a trail of breadcrumbs with the gift bows. He also realized that, in order to successfully grab the tree, he needed help, Alistair Leventhal's help to be exact. Leventhal wanted out of Rockwellvile and David was his chance, for a cut of the money from selling the egg, Leventhal agreed to design the star at the top of the tree to match the specifications David needed to take it away which is why he redesigned it. David thought the gang was on to him, so he tried to take them away too. David and Alistair are then arrested and taken away.

As everyone is getting their presents, Fred gives one present to the sad kid from the orphanage. When he unwraps it, he finds the Pterodactyl egg. Since it was found on land owned by the orphanage, the money from its sale belongs to them, thus saving the orphanage. The Mayor then makes the gang guests of honor at the feats, which Shaggy and Scooby help themselves to. Then everyone sings happy birthday to Daphne.

Notes/trivia

  • The episode's title is a pun on the famous Christmas greeting "Merry Christmas".
  • This was originally intended to air for November 30, 2015.[2]
  • It's revealed that Daphne was born during Christmas. Due to her having beef with Christmas and trying to celebrate her birthday even before Christmas Day, it's not explicitly stated whether or not it's on Christmas Eve or on Christmas Day, but it's implied to be the latter.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities

  • This episode breaks the premise that press releases had given about the gang travelling during the summer, but series writer Jon Colton Barry said that this was before he and Zac Moncrief had started work on the show, and decided not to be exclusive, but to go back and forth between that idea and other parts of the year.[4]
