Revenge, Inc. is the second and final story in Scooby-Doo #21, by DC Comics. It was preceded by Revenge of the Mudman.

Premise[]

A group of villains have banded together for revenge against Mystery Inc., and they have a hypnotic gun to trap the gang in their worst nightmares.

Synopsis[]

A group of five villains whom Mystery Inc. had previously caught group together under the name Revenge, Inc., plotting revenge against Mystery Inc. using a hypnotic weapon. Later, as Mystery Inc. drives through the street, a photographer invites them into his home to take a picture of them. Though they find the flash very bright and the photographer soon disappears, they think little of it and return to their lives. As Velma leaves the scene, she notices a strange man holding a sign reading, "WAKE UP! The end is near."

Velma updates Mystery Inc.'s online case logs on their most recent case, but notices an entry she did not write, accusing Mystery Inc. of interfering with police investigations. Shaggy and Scooby visit a diner, but notice they are not getting full no matter how much they eat. Finally, Fred and Daphne's group visit a movie theatre, but the ticket seller transforms into a monster and runs away with the cash. They chase her into an alley, but a police officer intervenes, accusing them of terrorizing an innocent woman.

Suddenly, the police officer and other townspeople transform into monsters themselves, chasing Fred and Daphne away. They reunite with Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby and barricade themselves in the diner as the monsters try to force themselves in. However, Velma notices the man with the sign among the crowd, not transformed into a monster like the others. She also remembers the music playing earlier and sees an advertisement for the "Wake Up Breakfast Special." She realizes she is dreaming and shouts at Mystery Inc. to wake up.

They wake up in the house where they took the picture, realizing the camera was a hypnotic weapon that placed them in a nightmare trance. The man with the sign was a product of her subconscious mind, telling her she was in a trance. In the next room, they spot and recognize the five perpetrators, celebrating their success. So, Shaggy and Scooby enter, disguised as photographers, and offer to take a picture of them to commemorate the plan. They activate the hypnotic camera, subduing them and handing them to the police. In their trance, they are in a world with their greatest fear, Scooby-Doo.

  • Their former villain costumes seems to be a spoof of the Ghost of Redbeard, the Mummy of Ankha, Charlie the Robot, the Green Globs and Dracula.
  • It is implied that Velma lives elsewhere than in the Mystery Inc.'s shared home as previously established by DC Comics.
  • Yell II, the movie Fred and Daphne go on a date to in their dream, is a spoof of "Scream II" that was a blockbuster at the time of this comics' release.
  • Though Daphne never uses her typical catchphrase "Jeepers" in this comic, she does use a variant, "Creepers."
