The gang has just finished shopping at a store called Copsco where Fred has bought a trace evidence collection kit, Shaggy and Scooby then asks if Fred got lasagna but he says no. The gang then notices Daphne with a beard, Fred tries to ask Daphne about it but Velma tells him to ignore it. As they are driving Fred tries to ignore the beard but he can't and stops the van to asks Daphne about it. She answers that she has a beard because she wants a beard. Shaggy then notices the TV set for the show Poddle Justice which is Scooby's show and he has a crush on Lady Annabelle. Shaggy suggests that they look at the set which Fred agrees.

On the set, the gang notices how spooky the building is until they hear that some of the TV crew is quitting because of the Gargoyle attack. Velma recognizes the director as Daniel Valentino who is famous for making real and authentic films. He explains he's working on the TV show because his last four movies came in late and were way over budget, so the studios don't trust him anymore so the TV show is the only job he could get and is his last chance to finish a project on time. The assistant director reveals that they were a day behind because of the Gargoyle attack which confuses Fred. Daniel reveals that one of the Gargoyles came to life and attack the set. Fred volunteers to help solve the mystery which Daniel agrees on and introduces them to the assistant director, Carli, who will show them around.

  +
Carli shows the gang around the set when Shaggy notices the spooky Gargoyle decor. Carli says that they picked the building because the gothic architecture was perfect for their episode. Daphne asks if people actually live in the building which a voice says that they do. A man named Mr. Sullivan appears and talks about how the Gargoyles are a working of art and protests against the TV crew keeping him up at night with their loud noises. Carli tries to explain that they had an agreement with the tent board, but Mr. Sullivan shrugs it off and leaves. Carli then leaves and the gang decides to solve the mystery. Shaggy tries to leave but gets stuck to one of the Gargoyle statues, after he gets unstuck Fred and Velma find some strange slime on the statue and claim its a clue. Daniel then arrives and questions the gang if the goo is a clue which they nervously agree on. Daniel then introduces them to the crowded service table which has a lot of food on it to which Shaggy and Scooby eat. Suddenly Scooby notices Lady Annabelle, Shaggy asks Scooby to go talk to her but he is nervous. So, he tries to introduce him to her but Scooby hides behind a camera.

On the TV set, the crew is about to shoot a scene for an episode where Lady Annabelle and Dr. Hudson notice a knife in the ceiling and roll on the floor. After the scene, the director suggests doing it again, but Charlene refuses claiming she feels like an idiot. Shaggy then tries to get Scooby to talk to Lady Annabelle again when he does he chokes on his words then the Gargoyle appears.

  +
As everyone runs away in fear of the Gargoyle it soon notices the gang and chases after them. It follows them into a boiler room. After being backed up to a dead-end Daphne chases the Gargoyle away using steam from the pipes and the gang escapes. The rest of the TV crew quit and hand over the walkie talkies to Daniel. When the range enters the scene Shaggy questions about why they would decorate the building with monsters on purpose where Velma explains that the use of Gargoyles dates back to ancient times. An old legend states that in the 600s a monster named Gargouille was ravaging France, Saint Romanus a brave and fearless defender slayed the monster. The creature was then mounted on a newly built church to scare off evil spirits. From then on Gargoyles not only served to drain water but were though to protect the building and its inhabitants themselves, their gruesome visages can still be seen all over Europe. Carli then arrives and says that she tried to convince the crew to stay but wouldn't listen and states that they might have to shut down production. Velma reassures Daniel that the gang can be their crew and Carlie goes to the actors back. The gang then splits up to look for clues. Scooby then eats some food and tries to talk to Lady Annabelle but he gets food on her when he talks which makes her leave, much to Scooby's dismay.

Outside on a balcony, Fred asks Daphne to check the Gargoyle statues for more of the slime from earlier while he, Shaggy, and Scooby go to take samples from the Gargoyles. Shaggy and Scooby then have a disagreement on who should take the Gargoyle samples when the Gargoyle behind Shaggy turns out to be the real Gargoyle. After trying multiple attempts to warn Shaggy about the Gargoyle, Scooby simply shows the Gargoyle to Shaggy and they run across different Balconys and into a room in the building. When the Gargoyle enters the room Shaggy and Scooby trick him by putting on a comedy show but when a man in a towel shows wandering what they are doing in his apartment the Gargoyle realizes the trick and a musical chase scene happens.

  +
Outside, Charlene calls her agent about wanting out of the show because of the Gargoyle. Mr. Sullivan then calls about the TV crew invoking the wrath of the Gargoyle when in reality he's just ordering a pizza. Lady Annabelle then calls her agent about wanting out of the show as well. The gang then prepares to analyze the Gargoyle samples in their custom lab in the back of the Mystery Machine. Velma states that the Gargoyles are made from granite and are hundreds of years old she then analyzes dust from the actual Gargoyle which was found in Daphne's beard and discovers something interesting in which Fred agrees. Fred then asks Daniel where the next shooting is which is on the roof where the gang decides to plan a trap for the Gargoyle.
  +
  +
While they are shooting the scene the Gargoyle appears and attacks. Fred then arrives in the Mystery Machine with a balloon attached to it where Shaggy and Scooby try to catch the Gargoyle with a net. Which causes the Gargoyle to get hit on the head and fall out of the van with Scooby. After a small skirmish, the Gargoyle knocks Lady Annabelle of the roof, and Scooby uses the Gargoyle to try and save her. They all crash to the ground and into a cement mixer causing wet cement to pour all over the Gargoyle. Scooby finally introduces himself to Lady Annabelle, but then the Gargoyle bursts out of the cement and tries to attack the dogs but the cement dries up and traps the Gargoyle.
  +
  +
In the daytime, Fred chisels the Gargoyle's head out of the cement and unmasks the Gargoyle who is actually Carli the assistant director. Velma explains that they didn't see it at first but all the clues pointed in one direction. The gang knew it couldn't be a real Gargoyle because the dust from the monster was plaster, not granite like the statues around the balcony. Plus in the legends, a real Gargoyle was supposed to protect its building not destroy it like their Gargoyle was doing. The strange slime on the lobby statues was grease that Carli used when she made molds of the Gargoyles for her costume. Carli reveals that she did it because she was invisible even though she did all the work around the set. She believed she should've been the director instead of Daniel, so she figured if she could get Daniel fired she'd finally get a spot in the director's chair. She tries to say that should would've gotten away with it but then corrects herself because the odds were against her in hindsight. Carli is then picked up by a crane and placed in the flatbed of a police truck that drives away with her. Shaggy then praises Scooby as a hero, but Daniel claims that his career is ruined because of the Gargoyle, but Daphne shows him a good ending to the show which makes Daniel happy. Fred then thanks Daphne for her beard but Daphne decides to just wing in the mustache instead.

Poodle Justice is the fourth episode of season 1 of Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!

Premise

Scooby gets to visit the set of his favorite TV show, where he meets the lovely dog actress star. Unfortunately, he doesn't have the courage to talk to her, and to make matters worse, a gargoyle is scaring everyone off set.

Synopsis

Police are swarming a building when suddenly a poodle detective named Lady Annabelle arrives along with her sidekick Dr. Hudson. A cop lets them into the crime scene where Lady Annabelle smells something and points right at a spooky building. Someone then yells "cut" revealing the whole scene was actually a setup for a TV show, and Charlene, who plays Dr. Hudson in the show, protests about her portrayal as a sidekick to a dog and leaves. Everyone takes 20 while the director protests against a Gargoyle statue casting a shadow in the shot. Suddenly the shadow flies away revealing the Gargoyle is alive and flying right for the director.

Notes/trivia

  • This is the first time one of the gang in BCSD has a love interest, most appropriately Scooby.
  • Lady Annabelle seems to be her name on and off the screen.
  • Velma breaks the fourth wall by mocking Mr. Valentino for working on a "silly mystery show, with a dog", which Scooby and Shaggy take as a personal insult.
  • Mr. Valentino breaks the fourth wall when he comments about being sucked into Velma's illustrative exposition about gargoyles.
  • The chase song, "Transylvania Polka", was reused from the direct-to-video film Scooby-Doo! Frankencreepy.
  • Scooby repeatedly tries to speak to Lady Annabelle, but either freezes up or runs away due to nerves. He finally introduces himself after saving her from the Gargoyle near the end of the episode.

Cultural references

  • The episode title is a play on the term "Social Justice".
  • Lady Annabelle and Dr. Hudson are parodies of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, respectively.
  • Copsco, the name of the crime scene supply store, is a parody of Costco.
  • After Scooby saves Lady Annabelle from the Gargoyle, he turns to her and introduces himself as, "Doo, Scooby-Doo", in a voice similar to how Sean Connery said, "Bond, James Bond".

Quotes

Daphne: I don't hear you questioning Shaggy about his beard.
Shaggy: Did you hear that chin-fuzz? You've officially been recognized as a beard.
Scooby-Doo: Oh, we're so proud!
Fred: Shaggy's a man.
Shaggy: Another first! Hahahaha. Take that uncle Dave!

FRED: One of the Gargoyle's did come alive.
SHAGGY: Like, that's great; let's make sure that WE stay alive!

TV Voiceover Announcer: "And Gargoyle Makes Three", brought to you by "Running For Your Life", a subsidiary of "For The Love of All That Is Precious Please Help Us".
