Premise[]

Shaggy finally gets the chance to win an arcade toy he has wanted since childhood.

Synopsis[]

On Shaggy's request, Mystery Inc. stops at Pizza O'Possum's Party Emporium, an arcade and restaurant chain. Shaggy is excited to win the arcade's top prize, Pizza Pup, which he was wanted since childhood but could never get enough tickets. However, the store's manager, Grandpa Gary, states that business has been dwindling. A child, Lydia, explains that an animatronic, Pizza O'Possum, has come to life and started attacking visitors to the arcade. Gary retired O'Possum due to lack of customer interest, and O'Possum has apparently come to life for revenge. Promised Pizza Pup as a reward, Shaggy resolves to investigate the attacks with Mystery Inc.

Shaggy and Scooby order pizza, meeting an employee who delights in the Pizza O'Possum attacks as it keeps the "bratty kids" away. Meanwhile, Daphne, Velma, and Fred search the arcade, where Velma explains that her childhood previous video game addiction has left her scarred with calluses, causing her to since fear video games. After searching the storage room where Grandpa Gary kept O'Possum, they find a stack of phone books that Lydia used to reach the Battle Boppers game, the only game rewarding enough tickets to win Pizza Pup.

Mystery Inc. prepares a trap for O'Possum. Velma faces her fear of video games by playing Battle Boppers, which lures the animatronic into appearing. While the other members of Mystery Inc. are initially able to restrain it, Velma, too focused on the video game, does not activate the trap as intended, and O'Possum attacks Fred's group. However, as Velma wins the game's jackpot prize, O'Possum is distracted and seeks the tickets, but Shaggy knocks it unconscious with a mallet.

Fred rips off the animatronic's head, revealing it is not a human in a costume. However, Shaggy catches Lydia controlling the robot from inside a photo booth. She sought to scare away competitors as she saved up enough tickets to win Pizza Pup. She targetted Battle Boppers as it was the only game that rewarded enough tickets to win Pizza Pup in a single playthrough. Though Lydia is too young to be arrested for any crimes, the employee calls her mother to inform her of her daughter's actions. As Lydia is escorted away, Grandpa Gary gives Pizza Pup to Shaggy as promised.

Notes/trivia[]

  • This episode was aired in a death slot on Boomerang in the United States.
  • Perhaps because of the irregular format, this and The Curse of Half-Beard's Booty was the last to air (despite the intention of Professor Huh? Part 1 and Professor Huh? Part 6 3/4 being written as the finale), which has been the case in other countries, too.
  • This episode and The Curse of Half-Beard's Booty were a test for a potential season 3 set up, with Jeff Mednikow given creative control over them. In doing so, story editor, Jon Colton Barry, found their personalities to be too off-model and does not consider them to be canon.
  • This episode is the only one in Be Cool, Scooby-Doo! to not feature a cold opening, as well as the only one to contain two segments (this and the next).
  • This episode is the another instance in the Scooby-Doo franchise where a child that turns out to be the villain calls the gang "meddling grown-ups", in a spoof of the usual "meddling kids" line. The first to do so was Jimmy in the What's New, Scooby-Doo? episode Gentlemen, Start Your Monsters!.

Miscellaneous[]

  • Disguises: Shaggy and Scooby as partygoers (no costume change).
  • Traps: Mystery Inc. restrains Pizza O'Possum with sticky hands, then Velma knocks it unconscious with a mallet (failed)
  • Clues: Stacked phone books.

Cultural references[]

  • This episode is based on the Five Nights At Freddy's video game franchise, which is set in Fazbear's Pizza. Additionally Scott Cawthon, the creator of the franchise, based Fazbear's Pizza on Chuck E. Cheese, a real-life American restaurant chain.
  • Battle Boppers seems to be based on Space Invaders (1978), a shoot-'em-up arcade game.

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • None known.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

Others: Awwww. So cute.
Shaggy: (Running back) No. I've changed my mind. Give him to me!
