Shaggy finds crude petroleum inside the Gold City Mine.
Petroleum is a naturally occurring, black liquid found in geologic formations beneath the Earth's surface, which is commonly refined into various types of fuels. It consists of hydrocarbons of various molecular weights and some other organic compounds. The name petroleum covers both naturally occurring unprocessed crude oil and petroleum products that are made up of refined crude oil. It is also called Black Gold.

He created the Miner Forty-Niner disguise and worked to scare everyone away from the tourist stop so that he could buy the land cheaply and cash in on the previously undiscovered fortune. Mystery Inc. trapped the Miner and discovered Hank's plan after discovering that a jar of a black syrupy liquid, mistakenly identified by Shaggy as chocolate syrup, was really crude oil.[1]
While chasing the Ghost of Redbeard and his pirate crew through their lair full of stolen goods, Shaggy and Scooby encountered a ghost sword that floated in the air and attacked them. Shaggy attempted to battle the sword with a stick of liverwurst, but Shaggy and Scooby ran for cover behind a barrel when that proved unsuccessful. Though the sword tried to chase them, it became lodged in the barrel and caused it to start pouring out its contents. Shaggy and Scooby filled mugs with the liquid and began drinking it, believing it to be a beverage, but quickly spit it out when they discovered that the barrel was full of oil.[2]
