Night on Haunted Mountain is the eighth episode of the second season of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, and the thirty-fourth overall.

Premise[]

After an accident on top of a mountain, the gang come face to face with Dark Lilith, who is terrorizing anyone who approaches nearby.

Synopsis[]

While Gary and Ethan climb Mount Diabla, they're attacked by Dark Lilith. She causes them to fall off a cliff, and as a result they lose the soccer team's lucky soccer ball and they are injured. As the gang begins to investigate, the monster attacks them and a band of hillbillies at their camp in nearby Scorpion Ridge. One of the hillbillies named "Ugly Jimmy," catches Daphne's eye as, unlike the rest of the tribe, he is handsome and muscular. Jimmy decides to help the gang solve the mystery.

The gang falls into a cave and meets an amnesiac explorer calling herself "Boron" who is holding Fred's soccer ball, believing it to be her lover. She leads the gang to the Dark Lilith's hideout after the monster attacks Jimmy; the hideout turns out to be an old Spanish galleon. The gang realizes that Dark Lilith is guarding the ship and after getting past all the traps they find a piece of the Planispheric Disk. While investigating they also find a journal written by the same Spanish Conquistadors who founded Crystal Cove. While traveling they found a great treasure: A crystal sarcophagus but it soon drove mad for power and wealth. After realizing what they were doing they used the disk pieces they had to map out their location and bury the treasure underground. Seconds later, Dark Lilith appears to get the disk piece, too they gang releases the ship and head downhill. After crashing Velma is outside the ship and sees Dark Lilith walking away with the disk piece. Velma soon notices the stripes on Lilith's leg. Dark Lilith is Hot Dog Water who is still working for Mr. E. She unmasks herself and reveals she made the costume and used some of the super helium she made to help her fly. She told Gary and Ethan how great soccer stars climb Mount Diablo to draw the gang here and Fred would have set off all the traps to let her get the piece. When Velma asks what she's going to do, Hot Dog Water lets her have the disk piece as a sign of true friendship and will avoid Mr. E. After she is gone, the gang comes out of the ship and ask where Lilith is and Velma says she flew away. With the mystery solved, the gang is thanked by the hillbillies as it is revealed that "Ugly Jimmy" was deformed in the fall, being renamed, "Handsome Jimmy." The gang drives off with Velma becoming concerned about the location of the sixth and final piece of the Phanispheric Disk. Unbeknownst to the group they're being watched by the ghost of a Conquistador, which mumbles about "Nibiru" and laughs ominously as it fades away while they return to town.

Notes/trivia[]

  • This episode was aired in Latin America and Brazil on October 22, 2012.
  • Velma is the only one who currently knows about Hot Dog Water being Dark Lilith.
  • The desert with saguaro cactus, within a short driving distance of Crystal Cove, is another clue that the town is in California rather than Florida.
  • Cartoon Network, the DVDs, and online streaming sites refer to this episode as The Night on Haunted Mountain.
  • The 'previously on' recap at the start of the episode, narrated by Fred, heavily features Hot Dog Water and her involvement with the gang thus far in the second season, foreshadowing her role in the coming mystery.
  • This is the first mention of Nibiru but would not come to light again until The Midnight Zone.

Miscellaneous[]

Cultural references[]

  • The title may be a reference to the song "Night on Bald Mountain".
  • This is one of many episodes that has references to Bavaria. Gary wears lederhosen, like Shaggy and Fred did in the previous episode.
  • Lilith is a female demon figure in Jewish mythology.
  • The soccer ball's painted face looks like the painted face on the Wilson volleyball in the Tom Hanks film Cast Away.
  • Fred's "trapping sense" tingling is a reference to when Spider-Man's "spider-sense" would tingle.
  • Hideous Ugly Jim is a reference to the Twilight Zone episode The Eye of the Beholder, where the main character's beautiful appearance is considered ugly and deformed.

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • None known.

Inconsistences/continuity errors and/or goofs[]

  • It is impossible that Fernando El Aguirre was able to build the mechanical traps, because they are very advanced for the time.
  • Not an error as such, but Dark Lilith is credited as "Lilith".
  • It is never actually implied or explained what happens to Boron after the gang discover the ship. Fred calls her name out but there is no response, and she doesn't reappear within this episode or any other.
  • Granny Snaggletooth appears very annoyed with the gang for the damage to their trailers and City Hall, which they weren't even directly responsible for, telling them to 'leave before things get ugly', yet when they come crashing down the mountain aboard the Santa Lucia, blowing up propane canisters and causing considerably more damage, she appears unbothered and even asks Shaggy for a 'smooch for the road'.

Quotes[]

Gary: It hurts my feelings that you think I did that on purpose, Ethan.
Ethan: I-I'm sorry.
Gary: Psych! (hurts himself) Ow.
Ethan: (turns red and growls) I. Hate. You.

Daphne: For attacking Ethan and Gary, we should find this monster and give her a medal.

Shaggy: Like, are you sure this is a town? It looks more like a place where old trailers come to die.

Marcie: So humiliating having to rely on a guy.
