Melbourne O'Reilly is an Australian archaeologist and adventurer, and one of Fred Jones' heroes. His trademark catchphrase is "Crikies."

Physical appearance[]

Melbourne is a well-built, middle-aged man with blond hair. He wears a tan shirt over his white undershirt, tan shorts, and brown hiking boots. His accessories include a wide-brimmed hat and a black bandanna around his neck.

Personality[]

Melbourne is adventurous and friendly. He is also intelligent when it comes to historical artifacts and languages (like Egyptian hieroglyphics), but seems to not be very knowledgeable regarding minerals, as he confused real gold for iron pyrite (fool's gold).[1] He seems to enjoy dangerous activities, as when Fred recounted his adventure of hand-catching Piranha's on the Amazon, he laughed it off, and called it nothing, likening it to a day at the beach compared to collecting the dinosaur bones of El Oloroso, and is very confident in his skills. He is also very brave, bordering on fearless, as when Velma revealed Luis Cepeda hoped his scheme would scare away O'Reilly, he immediately stood up and shouted "Never!"; though, in Mummy Scares Best, he does seem to know when to flee, as he tells the gang to flee from the Mummy of Scamses and his Zombified minions.

Season one[]

Melbourne excavated dinosaur bones for the Costa Rican Museum in Costa Rica. He ignored the warnings of Luis Cepeda while gathering the bones of a Dinosaur Spirit. While retrieving them at the Temple of Agazar, he was attacked by the spirit.

He was present at the showing of the dinosaur exhibit where he met Mystery Inc. When the dinosaur spirit started to terrorize the museum, he decided to find and capture it. He took the gang to search the abandoned gold mines under the museum. He went alone when the group split up and then reappeared after the gang escaped the dinosaur spirit.

Daphne Blake suspected him of being the spirit, believing that he'd do anything to be a hero. However, he was cleared of suspicion after the true culprits were revealed.[2]

Season two[]

Melbourne O'Reilly unmasked

Melbourne unmasked.

He invited the gang to a dig at the Pyramid of the Moon, but was hypnotized into dressing up as the Mummy of Pharaoh Scamses.[1]

Notes/trivia[]

  • Melbourne O'Reilly has some characteristics in common with reality-tv zoologist Steve Irwin.
  • He is very likely to have been named after the city of Melbourne, the coastal and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, which in turn was named after British prime minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.
