Lost Soles of Jungle River! is the fourteenth episode of season 2 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? and the fortieth overall.

Premise[]

Jason Sudeikis joins Mystery Inc. in searching the Amazon for the lost sneaker factory of La Pesadilla, where he hopes to find a rare 1912 sneaker. However, they are frequently attacked by El Hombre Serpiente, a mythical creature said to protect the forest from intruders.

Synopsis[]

Actor-comedian Jason Sudeikis writes in his diary as he rides on a boat along the Amazon River. He explains that he has collaborated with Mystery Inc. to locate a certain treasure. However, while he is finishing his entry, he is attacked in his quarters by a snake monster. Mystery Inc. and Sudeikis run from the monster while Sudeikis protects his collection of sneakers that he brought along. Shaggy and Scooby use a powerful hose to blast the monster overboard, escaping its pursuit.

Sudeikis explains that he met Mystery Inc. at a sneaker store. When Sudeikis and Scooby fought over a rare pair of sneakers, they found a treasure map hidden inside one of the sneakers. The map appeared to indicate the lost sneaker factory of La Pesadilla, a factory that was destroyed by a flood and has been lost for decades, but still contains rare and valuable sneakers. At that moment, they decided to collaborate in locating the treasure, though both Sudeikis and Mystery Inc. want to claim the treasure for themselves.

After loading Sudeikis' sneaker collection and the Mystery Machine onto the ship, they met with the captain, who explained that a snake-man monster, El Hombre Serpiente, roamed around the area. They set sail and narrowly escape the monster on the port, but soon crash after the captain neglects to watch the helm. As they explore the land on foot, they find La Pesadilla, but Sudeikis fights with a lost tour guide over the map, wanting to use the map to find civilization. Velma finds still-warm coffee in the village, indicating someone had recently been there.

Suddenly, they are attacked again by El Hombre Serpiente, who chases them back onto the ship. The captain abandons the ship, preventing them from setting sail again, and the monster bumps into a flammable tank, which sets the entire ship ablaze and forces them to evacuate on the Mystery Machine. With the ship sunk, they trek the rest of the way on foot, eventually finding the factory. Sudeikis attempts to acquire a special pair of sneakers in the factory, but sneakers are protected by a deep pit, preventing him from acquiring the sneakers.

Upon finding a rubber footprint, Mystery Inc. decides they have enough evidence to expose the perpetrator. After Scooby lures the monster into appearing, Mystery Inc. turns on the machinery and attempts to fire sticky rubber at the monster with a hose. However, Shaggy and Scooby instead find themselves glued to conveyor belt, which threatens to feed them into the machinery. Sudeikis rescues them just in time, and after a brief chase El Hombre Serpiente falls into the trap pit. During the chase, Sudeikis managed to acquire the rare sneakers.

El Hombre Serpiente turned out to be the clerk from the shoe store, who was also in pursuit of the lost sneaker factory. Velma found that the coffee from the village was not a local variety, instead coming from a coffee shop near the shoe store. She also found that the shoeprints were made with a modern sneaker, not one from the time the factory was open. Bringing the perpetrator with them, Mystery Inc. and Sudeikis start sailing back to civilization, where Sudeikis and Scooby decide to share the sneakers from the factory.

Notes/trivia[]

  • Shaggy announces the celebrity guest.
  • Both Fred and Shaggy grow a beard during their trip up the Amazon. Even Scooby-Doo grows a five o'clock shadow. Ironically Shaggy's beard, a goatee held in place by a rubber band, is the better kempt of the two.
  • Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy all rip the sleeves off their usual tops while travelling up the Amazon.
  • The coffee cup shown during the end reveal of the episode says Chen's Coffee, which is a reference to a coffee shop by the same name in Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated.
  • Jason Sudeikis mentions that Daphne and Fred like each other, which was a first for this series.
  • This episode is continuously being referred as Lost Shoes of Jungle River on STACKTV.

Miscellaneous[]

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • In the final scene, we see a long shot of Jason Sudeikis and Shaggy on the roof of the Mystery Machine. But when the shot switches to close up, Scooby-Doo is there as well.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • The map used by Mystery Inc., as the map of South America shown in the shoe store scene, contains numerous errors:
    • Based on the location indicated on Velma's tablet, this episode takes place in Brazil, a Portuguese-speaking country. However, the monster, the town La Pesadilla, and most of the labels on the map have Spanish names.
    • Most of the labels are in Spanish, but one label says "Carte du Bas-Amazone" ("Map of the Lower Amazon"), which is in French, not Spanish.
      • Additionally, this is labelled as a particular point on the map, rather than being the map title.
    • The map depicting the factory indicates that the Atlantic Ocean is south of the Lower Amazon. However, as shown by Velma's map, it is north.
      • Velma's map also shows that the point is much further from the Atlantic Ocean than the map suggests.
    • The map labels an arbitrary point with "La Jungla" ("The Jungle"), even though the entire map depicts a jungle.
    • The map labels the Amazon River as a point on land.
    • The map contains an image of a pyramid on water.
    • Despite the map being in Spanish, the compass rose uses the letters N, S, E, and W for the English-language names of the cardinal directions (north, south, east, and west). The Spanish-language letters would be N, S, E, and O for norte, sur, este, and oeste.
    • The country of Argentina is missing from Velma's map of South America.
    • Velma's map also shows the borders of a non-existent country southeast of French Guiana.
  • The first bird sound heard in the rainforest is a kookaburra - a bird only found in Australia. This kookabura sound effect was often used in classic Looney Tunes cartoons whenever there was a jungle.
  • When Jason narrates his diary, at first he calls the day when they arrive at the Amazon "Day 12", but when he runs from the Snakeman, he calls it "Day 21".
