Kickin' Pirate Booty is a story in Scooby-Doo #121, by DC Comics.

Premise[]

Fred takes the gang to the Nautical History Museum owned by his childhood friend, Albert Sylver, when the ghost of Long Gone Slivers comes back from the dead to reclaim his treasure.

Synopsis[]

Mystery Inc. travels to the Nautical History Museum to meet Fred's childhood friend, Albert Sylver, an explorer who discovered the Black Mirage, the ship of pirate Long Gone Slivers. They attend a party aboard a ship to see Slivers' famed treasure. However, during the party, the ghost of Long Gone Slivers appears, kidnaps Sylver, and sails the Black Mirage into the fog, threatening to harm Sylver if anyone followed them. Though Mystery Inc. meets with the ship's captain, the Black Mirage disappears from their radar. They meet the museum's assistant director, Lisa Melville, who helps them begin their investigations.

As Fred and Daphne sail into the fog looking for the Black Mirage, they realize that the fog is strangely concentrated and static. Back on land, Shaggy and Scooby visit the party's dining area, but Scooby finds two suspicious businessmen looking for Sylver. Meanwhile, Velma and Melville search Sylver's office looking for historical files on the Black Mirage, but the password to Sylver's computer has been changed. As Velma holds a picture frame showing Fred and Sylver as children, the ghost attacks them, claiming to be looking for a map. After a confrontation, the pirate flees, jumping into the sea. Velma realizes the picture frame contained the map to the treasure.

Mystery Inc. returns to the party and uses a searchlight to reveal the Black Mirage. The ghost pirate climbs onboard and reveals himself to be Sylver, who faked his own kidnapping to escape loan sharks. He got funding for his expedition from the loan sharks but also falsely claimed to be Long Gone Slivers' descendant and fabricated the treasure to attract them. Although Sylver paid back his loan, the loan sharks demanded more, so he created the disguise in an attempt to scare them away. As police apprehend the two businessmen, Sylver reveals the "treasure" he hid on the ship was a shoebox of baseball cards.

Reception[]

Ray Tate of Line of Fire Reviews said, "'Aaaar!' Writer Robbie Busch, artist Scott Neeley and Heroic Age turn toward a storm cast by Long Gone Slivers in "Kickin' Pirate Booty." The characters have a little more salt to them than usual, and aye, but Daphne bedecked in a purple glittering gown is a fetching addition to any crew. The Gang pieces together the clues and finds their formula for mystery set adrift in favor of a clever twist."[1]
