He is relatively kind and is determined on getting the grand prize at the convention. He did show some rivalry against another contestant named Professor Pinch, who was secretly a cheater in stealing his idea.

John was the first contestant Shaggy and Scooby met during their weekend of eating different hamburgers at the convention. He greets them, and showcases a special creation of his, a hamburger that was around ten feet in size, which he hopes it'll make him win tonights prize.
While the two were trying out the magical burgers made by his rival, Professor Pinch, his tent was unexpectedly blown up by dynamite, which not only ruined his experiment, but the secret ingredient was also stolen. He tells the duo and gets rudely made fun of by Pinch for his "bad luck" and leaves, which brought suspicion in Shaggy and Scooby, who promise they'll get to the bottom of the case.
Later on, he ended up trying again in making the giant hamburger while Pinch and his henchman named Lefty attempted the same thing. John shortly became the champion of the competition after Pinch and Lefty were exposed and arrested for the large explosion and the theft behind John's secret recipe thanks to Shaggy and Scooby revealing the truth to the police.
