In Space is the eleventh episode of season 2 of Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!, and the thirty-seventh overall.
Premise[]
A bad parking space gets the gang a ride to a space station, where an alien contagion has spread among the crew and trust is at an all-time low.
Synopsis[]
Mystery Inc. flies in space after Fred accidentally parked the Mystery Machine in the back of a space shuttle. However, when they arrive at the Bromidic space station, they find the place deserted and destroyed, with the entire space crew missing. They begin investigating the station for clues with the shuttle's crew, Captain Lewis and Lieutenant Feigenbaum. However, while Shaggy, Scooby, and Feigenbaum search the mess hall, Feigenbaum is pulled into a ceiling vent and replaced. This new Feigenbaum transforms into a Space Kook-like monster and attacks them.
Meanwhile, Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Lewis use the holo-display to look at the station logs. They find that the space crew found something on Asteroid 5512-J. Shaggy and Scooby reunites with them, claiming Feigenbaum attacked them, but Feigenbaum denies it, claiming he was abducted. Suddenly, Lewis is pulled into a ventilation duct and a Space Kook attacks Mystery Inc. and Feigenbaum. After escaping it, Fred, Shaggy, Scooby, and Feigenbaum find a member of the space crew, Garret.
Reuniting with Mystery Inc., Velma finds in the medical bay that the station had been infected by an alien pathogen, according to the station's medical officer, Officer Soung. To avoid risking infection, they decide to evacuate the station, preparing the shuttle for departure. However, Daphne is revealed to be infected and sabotages the shuttle to prevent it from working. Another infected Space Kook opens the dumping bay, launching Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby into open space. Fred rescues them by entering the Mystery Machine, travelling to them by launching firework rockets, and reentering the space station just before the gate closes.
Daphne rejoins the group, claiming Fred locked her in a supply closet. With this, the group begins to doubt each other and suspect each other of being infected. However, continuing the investigation rationally, they prepare to capture the Space Kook in the ore processing plant. The trap fails, and the Space Kook poses as several members of Mystery Inc. to confuse them. However, it, disguised as Fred, fights with the real Fred on a conveyor belt. Mystery Inc. initially hesitates, but rescues the real Fred from the conveyor, feeding the doppelganger into a machine which destroys the costume.
The Space Kook turned out to be Officer Soung. Soung found gold on an asteroid, so he plotted to eliminate the crew from the space station so he could extract the gold and keep it for himself. He kidnapped them and kept them in the ore-processing plant as he used holographic technology from the holo-display to pose as them infected. As Soung admits to the crimes, he berates Lewis and Feigenbaum for not noticing the Mystery Machine parked in the space shuttle.

Continuity[]
- Velma again controls a giant grabbing arm. When she first used such an arm - in All Paws on Deck - she missed multiple times. This time she successfully grabs the real Fred on the first attempt.
- The artificial wormhole takes Scooby, Shaggy, and the alien back in time to previous episodes:
- The gang are sitting on the ground of the Crystal Canopy in Be Quiet Scooby-Doo!.
- Velma carries the gang on her back up the stairs of Lutz Manor in Where There's a Will, There's a Wraith.
- Scooby & Shaggy are trapped with the Gremlin on the outside Air Gigantica during flight in Gremlin on a Plane.
- Fred, dressed as a knight, taking on the Giant in Giant Problems.
- The gang finding the spanner while underwater in the Mystery Machine in All Paws on Deck.
- Fred transforms the Mystery Machine into different forms and activates different objects from previous episodes:
- The underwater form from All Paws on Deck.
- The face grabber from Area 51 Adjacent.
- Daphne's sockpuppet versions of the gang from Mystery 101.
- Ironically, Fred makes the comment that they were invited in the Space Shuttle by Velma's old science mentor. While not true on this occasion, that is exactly what happens in the later Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? episode Space Station Scooby when Bill Nye invites Mystery Inc. on his experimental shuttle.
- The monster, while not explicitly named, seems to based on the Spooky Space Kook from its titular episode of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, though its appearance is different. A more traditional version of the monster can be seen in the theme song of Be Cool, Scooby-Doo!.
Notes/trivia[]
- Soung estimates that the Mystery Machine with the Gang inside weighs 2.3 metric tonnes.
Miscellaneous[]
- Disguises: None.
- Traps: Mystery Inc. releases a dirt pile onto the monster (failed).
- Clues: logs from the holo-display; Soung's records in the medical bay.
- Running gag: Fred ends many sentences with "in space," including other characters' sentences. He even gets the last word in the episode - saying "in space" in Spanish.
Cultural references[]
- The episode is inspired by the film Alien (1979).
Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]
- None known.
Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]
- Garret has one "T" on the station's screen, but two in the voice credits.
- When the alien impersonates others, the shape of his space suit also changes to match the body of whoever he is impersonating. Additionally, when he is disguised as Scooby-Doo, he has four-fingered paws similar to Scooby's, but after revealing himself, they change on-camera to clawed five-fingered hands. How the alien achieved this effect is never explained, as his hologram device is only limited to his helmet.

Quotes[]
Fred: Did you ever think we'd be flying the Mystery Machine "In Space"? |
Fred: I mean, what are the odds your old science mentor would invite us up on a space shuttle? |
Officer Soung: And I would have gotten away with it if you kids hadn't accidentally parked your van in the back of a Space Shuttle! I mean, seriously, you guys didn't realise you were carrying an extra 2.3 metric tons of meddling on board? |
