I Put a Hex on You! is the twenty-fourth episode of season 1 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?
Premise[]
Daphne's makeup vlog gets her the chance to be the prime consultant to the rock band, the Hex Girls, which also gets the gang another mystery in the form of a haunted guitar that can control people's minds.
Synopsis[]
A delivery man delivers a package from an anonymous fan to the Hex Girls, a rock band. Opening the package, they find an electric guitar and recognize it as the guitar of the late Ester Moonkiller. They give the guitar to their roadie, Tiny, who tunes it. However, as he plays the guitar, he mysteriously falls into a hypnotic trance and jumps out the window with the guitar.
Later, Mystery Inc. helps the Hex Girls prepare backstage for a concert, with Daphne having been invited to be their consultant. They meet the fan club president, Xander, who interviews them about Tiny's situation. However, Tiny suddenly appears and attacks them. Using an impromptu trap, they manage to restrain Tiny and acquire Moonkiller's guitar. The Hex Girls then go onstage and perform, but when Thorn plays the guitar she begins to behave differently, and when Luna takes the guitar from her she also becomes affected. Thorn and Luna begin to wreck the stage, and Shaggy is forced to use a tranquilizer gun to sedate them. The ghost of Ester Moonkiller suddenly appears onstage and declares that all people who touch her guitar will become cursed.
After the Hex Girls awaken at their mansion, they explain the story of Ester Moonkiller. Moonkiller was a failed rock musician who, in an attempt to gain fame, sold her soul to demonic forces. She was given a demonic guitar which helped her perform, but she still failed to gain any recognition. On her deathbed, she placed a curse on her guitar which would affect those who played it. Thorn and Luna feel the effects of the curse, as they no longer want to be gothic rock singers and change into more modest clothing. They also meet their lawyer, who attempts to replace the Hex Girls with a knockoff band, the Jinx Gals.
Velma discovers a bottle of calamine lotion and receipt inside the guitar's package, which was supposed to be mailed to a different address. They decide to go to the address to investigate, where they find a mixing board. They also accidentally uncover a secret door opened with a light switch. Travelling into the secret room, they find an old picture of the Hex Girls, taken when the band had four members. Velma discovers a second secret passageway, where they are attacked and chased by Moonkiller's ghost. After escaping the ghost, they discover the passageway leads backstage. With this, Mystery Inc. decides they have enough evidence and begins preparing a trap.
The Hex Girls hold a do-over concert, with Velma preparing a certain contraption for the trap. When ready, the Hex Girls go onstage, and while they initially play a calm, simple tune, Velma finishes her contraption, playing a sound frequency which reverses the effects of Thorn and Luna's "curse." With Thorn wielding Moonkiller's guitar, they play I Put a Curse on You, gaining praise from the audience, but are attacked by the ghost, furious that the curse was broken. Though she initially chases Mystery Inc. around the stage, she becomes intimidated by the large crowd and attempts to retreat. Fred, however, triggers the trap, crushing the ghost under a falling decoration resembling Thorn's head. Mystery Inc. then unmasks the ghost.
The ghost turned out to be Xander. A former member of the Hex Girls, Xander was forced to leave as she suffered severe allergic reactions triggered by her anxiety about live performances. She then became the fan club president, though out of jealousy disguised herself as the ghost of Ester Moonkiller to sabotage the band. With the ghost unmasked, the Hex Girls finish their performance.

- The Hex Girls originally appeared in Scooby-Doo! and the Witch's Ghost.
- Daphne introduces the celebrity guests.
- While Dusk and Luna have the same personalities they have always had, Thorn is notably more comedy-based than before, with a lot of energy. They even use some Hanna-Barbera sound effects on her.
- This was the four hundredth television episode in the Scooby-Doo franchise to be broadcast.
- On HBO Max, it shows up as Episode 25.
Miscellaneous[]
- Disguises: Lifejackets and scuba gear.
- Traps: An impromptu pulley snare trap capturing Tiny; a falling head which captures the ghost of Ester Moonkiller.
- Clues: A bottle of calamine lotion, a receipt, a mixer board, and an old photo of the Hex Girls.
Cultural references[]
- The title of this episode is a spoof of the song "I Put a Spell on You" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
- When the delivery man hits the Hex Girl's doorbell, it plays the first bars of Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, an organ composition written by Johann Sebastian Bach.
- Strangely, the doorbell is engraved with the face of a different composer, Ludwig van Beethoven.
- Scooby-Doo shouting "Hello, Cleveland" when onstage before the Hex Girls'performance recalls the scene from the movie This is Spinal Tap when Derek Smalls yells the same thing, while lost backstage.
Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]
- None known.
Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]
- According to Velma, Xander breaks out in hives if she is placed in front of a large crowd. However, in a previous scene, she is seen directly cursing the audience as the ghost of Ester Moonkiller.
