Howl of the Fright Hound is the tenth episode of the first season of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated.
Premise[]
A robotic dog terrorizes Crystal Cove and frames Scooby. The gang has to capture the hound and clear Scooby's name.
Synopsis[]
An animal asylum is put on lockdown after being attacked by an extremely hostile hound creature. Meanwhile, Mystery Inc. meets at school, where they meet Velma's old companion, robotics enthusiast Jason Wyatt. Wyatt desires a romantic relationship with Velma, but Velma rejects his advances, not wanting to be associated with him.
That night, a tour bus led by Angie Dinkley is attacked by the same hound that attacked the asylum. Mystery Inc. later finds the upturned tour bus, and Sheriff Stone accuses Scooby of the crime and places him under arrest. The other members of Mystery Inc. later visit him in the animal asylum, where Scooby is in captivity with other dangerous, more hostile animals. One of the animals, a parrot in its own high-security prison cell, is revealed to be Professor Pericles, a former member of the original Mystery Incorporated. Pericles strangely gives Fred an ominous warning to be careful of those closest to him.
Mystery Inc. returns to the scene of the crime and find a robotic leg, indicating that the hound is a robot dog. Given this, they suspect Wyatt for building the robot, who would have a reason to frame Scooby to split up the group and thus be closer to Velma. They visit Wyatt's house to confront him, but Wyatt denies the accusations and breaks down in tears. While driving home, they are attacked by the fright hound once again, and though they report the incident to Stone, Stone refuses to acknowledge Scooby's innocence and does not release him from captivity.
Just then, Stone receives a report of another fright hound attack at the animal asylum. Mystery Inc. rushes to the crime scene, and as the guards are unable to neutralize the threat, the hound chases Mystery Inc. to a nearby robotics factory. Though the hound initially terrorizes them, they eventually get the idea to use the factory's machinery to crush and damage the robot. Scooby then uses a bulldozer to run the robot over, finally destroying it. Fred then uses the same machinery to capture the person that was controlling the robot.
The robot's operator turned out to be Jason Wyatt's mother. Mrs. Wyatt was upset with the bullying Jason endured at school, and blamed Mystery Inc. for contributing to the bullying. So, she created the robotic fright hound to terrorize them, with the intention of framing Scooby and splitting the group up so Jason can pursue a romantic relationship with Velma. However, after the confrontation at her house, Wyatt became even more enraged and attempted to use the robot to kill them.
After Mrs. Wyatt is handed over to Sheriff Stone, Velma finally confronts Jason Wyatt, rejecting all his romantic advances and desiring only a friendship with him; Jason accepts this offer. However, Shaggy decides to end his relationship with Velma so he could remain close to Scooby. Velma is devastated and deeply offended by this and breaks down in tears. Meanwhile, Sheriff Stone discovers that Professor Pericles has escaped from the asylum. At that moment, Velma receives a text message from Mr. E, telling them to "follow the parrot."

Cast[]
Continuity[]
- Jason has a newspaper clipping of mentioning how stocks have dived and the ghost-based economy has been undermined because they uncovered the monster scam of Professor Emmanuel Raffalo, which happened in the first episode.
- Daphne asks if the Mystery Machine's engine is missing again when it comes to a stop, which happened in The Creeping Creatures.
- This episode formally introduces Professor Pericles.
- Professor Pericles warns Fred to be careful of those closest to him. This foreshadows the events of All Fear the Freak, in which Fred's own supposed father, Mayor Jones, is revealed to be a corrupt manipulator responsible for the downfall of the original Mystery Incorporated.
Notes/trivia[]
- The Wax Phantom is based on a case that happened in the original series in the episode Don't Fool with a Phantom.
Miscellaneous[]
- Disguises: None.
- Traps: An improvised trap in which Fred uses factory machinery to capture the robot operator.
- Clues: A dog collar (intentionally planted at the crime scene by the perpetrator) and a robotic leg joint.
- "Jinkies" count: 2
Cultural references[]
- This episode is a homage to the 1984 film, The Terminator, with a robotic dog taking the place of a humanoid robotic skeleton, the T-800.
- The Fright Hound survives the flames of an exploding car, similar to how T-800 survived the flames of an exploding fuel truck.
- The police station scenes.
- Its disguise is burnt off at the police station, showing its exoskeleton underneath. This actually happened later on in Terminator.
- The climax takes place in a factory, they also both managed to bust down a factory door, just like the movie, and after the robot is believed to have been destroyed it makes one final attempt before being crushed to death at the very end.
- Even the music is alluded to.
- "Jason Wyatt" is also the name of the production manager of this series.
- This episode has similarities with the 1995 short film from Wallace & Gromit, A Close Shave, with a robot dog framing a real dog for their crimes.
- The room holding Professor Pericles is similar to the cell for Magneto in the first two X-Men movies.
- The uncanny way Pericles disturbs those who visit him is similar to Hannibal Lector in The Silence of the Lambs.
- Scooby's use of a forklift against the Fright Hound is reminiscent of Ellen Ripley's fight against the Queen Xenomorph in Aliens.
- When Officer Johnson calls up Sheriff Stone stating that all of the animal inmates have been rounded up (except for Professor Pericles), one of the inmates being wheeled in at the time resembled Yogi Bear.
Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]
- None known.
Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]
- The Crystal Cove News has a photo of Shaggy, Scooby, and Velma has them depicted in a happier place than what has been depicted during season one. Not at one point in the season (or even season two) would this likely have happened.
- After being damaged by the Fright Hound, the roof of the Mystery Machine looks untouched when the van drives to the factory.
- The Fright Hound is credited as the "Demon Dog", which is actually a description given of it within the episode.
- Jason's mom said she created the Fright Hound after seeing her boy being bullied. However, the Fright Hound attacks some officers in the episode's opening scene, which would not relate to her goals.
- No one could tell the difference between Scooby-Doo and the Fright Hound, although it was obvious that the Fright Hound was extremely scary and looked horrible and fierce.
- Mrs. Wyatt wants revenge on Mystery Inc. for bullying her son despite Gary and Ethan being his real bullies.

Fred: Quick everyone, into that abandoned factory. We'll be safe among the dangerous machinery. |
Mrs. Wyatt: (to the Gang} I saw how you treated my Jason at school. So naturally, I did what any mother would do. I built a demonic robot dog to destroy you! |
Shaggy: I don't think I'm ready for a girlfriend right now. But we can still be friends. Right? |
