The Headless Specter was the disguise of Penrod Stillwall.

Physical appearance[]

The Headless Specter appeared exactly like the portrait of Jefferson Stillwall that hung in the parlor, but without a head. He wore a 1800s style attire consisted of a brown double-breasted overcoat with dark brown cuffs and lapels, a light tan formal shirt with frilly cuffs, and a dark pink neck scarf tied formally and tucked under the coat like a Victorian-era puffy necktie. The specter also wore gray slim pants, black shoes, and formal white silk gloves. The Specter also appears to be abnormally tall, as he is roughly the same height as Shaggy in his headless stature.

Personality[]

He had an eerie laugh as he chased people around.

Penrod Stillwall shows his head

Penrod Stillwall unmasked.

The portrait itself was somehow rigged to periodically show the headless form as part of the spooky special effects Penrod set up (which included a floating candle) to scare potential thieves away, while he searched his broken-down home, looking for the hiding place of his great-great-great grandfather's secret treasure.

Notes/trivia[]

  • How could Penrod see if his head was inside his shirt? Unles he used some sort of electronic video camera and or simply peeked out of his shirt or he simply used his ears to guide him.
  • With no head, the Headless Specter shouldn't be able to make a sound, although as a ghost (or at least as a pretend one) he could have the power to make sound.
  • Whether he's standing or kneeling (most likely the former), the way the Headless Specter is positioned at the bottom of the chimney, there would've have to be a removable panel in the floor.
  • Even if Penrod was just trying to scare people away, it didn't stop him from jumping on top of Scooby, Shaggy, and Velma, who he thought were hiding under a bed, unless he knew there was just pillows underneath the sheet. He also tried to knock Shaggy off his balloon.
  • Clearly minutes have passed between the time it took the gang to catch Penrod and Asa, yet the former managed to change into a sweater by the time of the latter's capture. Either this is an animation mistake or he was wearing one underneath his costume.
  • When Penrod receives the bag of treasure, he's wearing the gloves of the Headless Specter.
  • The Headless Specter is a recurring enemy in the 'Mystic Manor' area of the PS2/GC video game, Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights. He's also unlockable in the Monster Gallery via Monster Token.
    • In the PlayStation version of the game, the Headless Specter was to be the final boss of the first area, known as "Major Miner's Mining Town", which was removed from the final game. Although inaccessible via normal means, a cutscene in the code shows that after defeating the Headless Specter, it was to chase after them, with Shaggy and Scooby finally defeating him by running him over with a cattle stampede.
