Gavin Swendig, often referred to as Mr. S, was a United States Army scientist working undercover as a high school biology teacher. He was involved in Project SCOOBI and developed the super-soldier Scrappy-Doo, but was killed by Scrappy in his rogue homicides.

Physical appearance[]

Swendig was a muscular Caucasian man with short, brown hair and glasses with rectangular frames. In his first appearance, he wore a grey jacket with blue buttons and sleeve cuffs over a white dress shirt, as well as brown pants, a yellow belt, and brown shoes.

Personality[]

Swendig appeared to be an affable and approachable biology teacher, having a positive reputation. Diya Dinkley was infatuated with him, and Velma thought very highly of him because, according to her, he could give her an internship at any criminology laboratory she wanted. He kept good relations with the Dinkleys, willing to provide Velma with valuable information for her investigation.

However, he was posthumously revealed to be a genius scientist who aided in a secret military operation to suppress "meddling kids." In doing so, he helped develop a dangerous super-soldier, supporting making it invincible, and aided the other scientists in abusing him. The abusive treatment Scrappy endured at the hands of the scientists eventually turned him rogue, causing him to kill his creators as an act of revenge against humanity.

History[]

Early life[]

Swendig was a researcher for Project SCOOBI, a military project designed to combat "meddling kids," which the military thought was a threat to society. Each of the scientists worked undercover to spy on society, with Swendig becoming a biology teacher at Crystal Cove High School. However, after operative Uncle Scoobi stole the research of Dr. Edna Perdue, the scientists were able to create a super-soldier in the form of a puppy, Scrappy-Doo, designed for espionage purposes.[1]

However, the scientists regularly abused Scrappy, and this led him to turn rogue.[2] After Scrappy killed scientist Earl Cogburn (also the police sheriff of Crystal Cove), the scientists attempted to kill him, but he was designed to be invincible. Evading responsibility for the project, they abandoned the project, with the exception of Uncle Scoobi, who aided him in his crimes and intended to escape Crystal Cove with him.[3] Swendig left Crystal Cove, supposedly for a sabbatical.[4]

Velma[]

Season two[]

Swendig returned to Crystal Cove just as Velma began investigating Cogburn's death. During the investigation, Donna and Linda Blake cast suspicion on Swendig, saying that he had spoken about Dr. Perdue during their campaign party. Velma contacted Swendig, who agreed to meet her the day after to tell her what he knew about Perdue. However, that night, Scrappy broke into his duplex and killed him by biting off his penis.[4] He was reported missing soon after, but authorities found his body in his home during Crystal Cove's Creaky Friday celebration.[5]

Daphne and Amber found his body in the morgue, awaiting autopsy with Cogburn's body. However, they were horrified by the injuries, reporting their findings to Velma.[5]
