Fright House of a Lighthouse is the first episode of the third season of What's New, Scooby-Doo?, and the twenty-ninth overall.
Premise[]
When Mystery Inc. stays with Fred's uncle Karl, they attempt to unmask the ghost of a lighthouse keeper who is haunting an old lighthouse and causing terror to ships out on the water.
Synopsis[]
A cargo ship navigates a foggy storm on Lake Michigan, relying on a lighthouse for navigation. However, the monstrous lighthouse keeper turns out the lighthouse, causing the ship to crash and forcing the sailors to abandon ship. Later, Mystery Inc. visits Fred's uncle, Karl, at his house in Wisconsin. However, at night, the lighthouse shines into Shaggy and Scooby's bedroom, keeping them awake. When they inspect the lighthouse, they are attacked by the keeper, scaring them back to Karl's house.
Karl explains that the Creepy Keeper is the ghost of a lighthouse keeper that was killed while trying to sink the Dauntless to scavenge its wreck. His ghost has been turning off the lighthouse, crashing cargo ships and preventing any goods from entering the town. While Mystery Inc. investigates the lighthouse, they meet another investigator, Verona Dempsey, who casts suspicion on a nearby van. Dempsey, revealing herself to be a tailor, gives Daphne a pair of long underwear. Entering the lighthouse, Daphne is grabbed by the monster and almost falls off the lighthouse, but is saved from falling by the long underwear.
At the lighthouse, Mystery Inc. spots the ghostly Dauntless, so they go to a nearby boat rental to rent a rowboat from Crusty McPete. At the rental, Shaggy and Scooby find a small motor, but Mystery Inc. meets Dempsey again, who also investigates the crime. At that point, they split up; while Shaggy and Scooby pursue the suspicious van, Fred, Daphne, and Velma board the Dauntless and find it occupied by a skeleton crew. However, they are caught, and the skeletons escape on a lifeboat. Fred, Daphne, and Velma are left stranded on the Dauntless which threatens to crash into the mainland.
Shaggy and Scooby watch as the operators of the van, obscured by their suits, use unidentified equipment on the ground. Shaggy and Scooby speculate they are aliens. Fred, Daphne, and Velma call Shaggy and Scooby, and the mysterious men, hearing the ringtone, chase them away. On the call, Velma asks them to return to turn the light on at the lighthouse so Fred could safely steer the ship back to port. Shaggy and Scooby, following from the light switch by the Creepy Keeper, but shout into a foghorn at the top of the lighthouse. Fred, hearing the sound, uses it to dock safely.
Returning to the dock, they meet Dempsey yet again, who has prepared a net trap for the culprit. They capture Crusty McPete, who admits to faking the ghost ship and its crew (which were really robots) so he could scavenge the wreck of the Dauntless. After McPete is arrested, Mystery Inc. returns to Karl's house, though Velma is disappointed that Dempsey solved the crime before her. However, she suddenly realizes that McPete did not admit to actually posing as the Creepy Keeper. So, Mystery Inc. returns to the lighthouse and prepares a trap for the actual culprit, They prepare a trap for the Creepy Keeper, and although this trap fails, Fred eventually captures it using a lasso. The Keeper falls down the stairwell in the process, leaving it hanging on a rope.
The culprit turned out to be Dempsey, who wanted to sabotage businesses competing with hers by sinking their cargo ships. She would only leave the lighthouse on for her own shipments so she could have her cloth imported. The people in the van, while suspicious at first, were actually scientific storm chasers unrelated to the crime. After Dempsey is handed over to authorities, Mystery Inc. returns to the town, where many business have been reopened now that goods can be imported. Shaggy and Scooby eat at Karl's cheese shop.
