History[]

Early life[]

In the 16th century, the Fraternitas Mysterium was a group of Spanish friars who arrived at Crystal Cove. However, upon their arrival, they encountered the conquistador Fernando El Aguirre, who warned them of the mysterious source of evil in Crystal Cove before his madness got the best of him. Though the conquistador fled, he left behind for the monks two of the pieces of the Planispheric Disk. As they solved mysteries, they did not discover that the disk marked the location of the Evil Entity. However, they were aware there was an evil at work behind the pieces and intended to destroy them to rid themselves and Crystal Cove of the evil. However, their mascot, Porto, was especially corrupted and stole one of the pieces, destroying much of Crystal Cove by using dozens of gunpowder barrels planted beneath the town. Their leader, Gabriello Serra, chased Porto into the alligator-infested swamps outside of town (which later became Gatorsburg) and retrieved the disk piece while Porto was dragged away by the alligators, but the other disk piece, thankfully, sank into the ocean with part of Crystal Cove after the gunpowder exploded. To prevent others from finding the disk piece, Serra hid the piece in a wheel of cheese.

Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated[]

Season two[]

After catching an imitator posing as the ghost of Gabriello Serra, the true ghost of Gabriello Serra (though initially thought to be a fake) first appeared to warn the young Mystery Inc. not to "evoke the memory of Nibiru" while attacking Velma Dinkley and George Avocados, ominously informing them that such a thing will only amplify the coming misfortune until Fred Jones got rid of him by turning on the stage lights. Unbeknownst to everyone, though, he had only reappeared to watch them from above.

He appears again to the gang, but is more reserved as he explains the severe danger they are in and how the story concerning the salvation of the town was fictionalized. In truth, Porto, influenced by the Evil Entity, destroyed the original Crystal Cove before he met his end. Informing them that this has all happened in the past and that Nibiru is not long before arrival, he goes on to say that the animal mascot in each mystery-solving group had always became corrupted prior to the terrible events that followed and transpired. He points to Scooby-Doo as he told them to "heed the warning of the alligators" and "the dog dies" before crumbling into dust. (Theater of Doom)

Post-Nibiru[]

When the Evil Entity was destroyed, it altered all of reality; thus the Fraternitas Mysterium wasn't formed in the past.[1]

Notes/trivia[]

  • Mystery-solving monks may be a nod to the fictional detective Brother Cadfael.
  • Their name means "Mystery Fraternity" in Latin.
  • The Ghost of Friar Serra's warning to the young Mystery Inc. concerning Scooby-Doo's status as their animal mascot, "heed the warning of the alligators" and "the dog dies", may have been a reference to the sign in Gatorsburg that blinked out some of its letters to spell "The dog dies."
  • It is an unexplained mystery how the monks who saw the arrival of the ship with the conquistadors survived to see the destruction of Crystal Cove, about 150 years later (according to Velma's tour narration in Beware the Beast from Below).
