The Fastest Food Fiend! is the ninth episode of season 1 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?

Premise[]

Shaggy and Scooby compete against celebrity Jim Gaffigan in a food eating contest, which involves racing across a fast food chain celebrating its 70th anniversary. During the contest, a grotesque, yellow racer comes into play.

Synopsis[]

At the Doc Tally's fast food restaurant, a mascot actor meets with the restaurant owner, Rick Tally, where Tally berates the actor for not committing to his job. However, the actor encounters a mysterious goblin-like monster.

Mystery Inc. travels to the restaurant, where Rick Tally and his brother, Bill, announce a competition to celebrate the restaurant's 70th anniversary. Shaggy and Scooby prepare to compete, but discover that one of their competitors is comedian Jim Gaffigan. The competition, consisting of a car race and burger eating contest, will award its winner with the first burger at the restaurant. However, the opening ceremony is interrupted by the monster, identified by an elderly contestant as ghost Spectral Speedster, who drives his car into the vehicles.

Despite the monster posing a threat to the safety of the guests, Rick Tally refuses to cancel the competition. The first race begins and ends with all competitors arriving at the restaurant at roughly the same time; although Shaggy, Scooby and Gaffigan arrived first, they slowed each other down, allowing the other competitors to catch up. During the burger-eating component of the contest, Fred, Velma and Daphne find the actor sealed in a freezer, who had been kidnapped by the Spectral Speedster. Velma notes the branded belt used to restrain the actor's wrists as well as the sabotaged freezer.

The second lap begins. Gaffigan encounters the Spectral Speedster, causing him to crash his vehicle. Mystery Inc. allows Gaffigan to enter the Mystery Machine. As they drive, Velma discovers that the restaurant is on the verge of bankruptcy but has an insurance policy worth millions of dollars. However, they are the last to arrive back at the restaurant, and as they begin eating the restaurant is attacked by the Spectral Speedster, who sabotages an ice cream machine.

During the final lap of the race, the Spectral Speedster runs many of the competitors' vehicles off the road, disqualifying them and leaving the Mystery Machine the only remaining vehicle. Using the vehicle's rocket mechanisms, the Mystery Machine arrives safely back at the restaurant, While Shaggy, Scooby and Gaffigan eat, Fred prepares a trap for the Spectral Speedster. However, the monster arrives early and the trap fails, and the monster sabotages the kitchen equipment and causes an explosion. Fred returns to the road with the monster and chases its car to a pier, performing a sudden U-turn and tricking the monster into driving his car off the pier and into the water. The monster is captured.

The monster turned out to be Bill Tally. Tally wanted revenge against his late father, Doc Tally, who left his entire business to his brother. So, in order to destroy the restaurant chain, Bill sabotaged the business to the verge of bankruptcy, creating the Spectral Speedster disguise to finally close the restaurant on its 70th anniversary. After Bill is handed over to authorities for his crimes, Scooby, Shaggy and Gaffigan agree to end the competition in a three-way tie, each simultaneously eating their last piece of food. They share the prize, eating the decomposing burger.

Notes/Trivia[]

Miscellaneous[]

Cultural references[]

  • The episode is a parody of Wacky Races, another TV series produced by Hanna-Barbera. This is evident from:
    • the old woman who dresses similar to Penelope Pitstop
    • the numbers on the race cars are in a similar format to those in Wacky Races- black numbers inside a white circle, or in the case of the Old Lady, a pink number.

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • When the fiend sabotages the slushy machine, he pauses pouring a green liquid into it. When he pauses, the liquid also pauses momentarily in mid air.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • The Mystery Machine hasn't been given a number.
  • The Moon is first crescent then full.
  • Rick and Bill are credited with their full names, but their surnames are called Rowdy, instead of Tally.
  • As the monster is about to be unmasked, Jim Gaffigan guesses it is the "old lady". But she can clearly be seen in both the preceding and following crowd shots.

Quotes[]

Jim Gaffigan: Hey, I've always been curious. Why are you guys more freaked out by pretend ghosts than a talking dog?

Shaggy: Like you guys, you don't understand. Mr Gaffigan is the competition! He made hamburgers say mean things to Scooby-Doo.
Scooby: And dancing french fries.

Bill Tally: And I would have gotten my revenge too, if it weren't for you meddling kids and that comedy legend Jim Gaffigan.
