A Mystery Solving Gang Divided is the second episode of season 1 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?

Premise[]

While investigating the mysterious appearance of ghost zombie Civil War soldiers at a historic battlefield in Pennsylvania, Scooby-Doo and the gang come face to face with a rival mystery-solving gang and learn an important lesson about teamwork, with a little help from Abraham Lincoln's ghost.

Synopsis[]

Zombie ghosts are spotted on a historic battlefield in Pennsylvania, prompting both Mystery Inc. and another investigative group, the Funky Phantom Crew, to investigate the crime scene. Both groups attempting to claim the mystery for themselves, they begin to conflict with each other, both following each other to crime scenes and refusing to share clues.

At the monument site, the groups damage evidence as a map is torn in half by their fighting. This prompts the ghost of Abraham Lincoln to appear in an attempt to encourage the groups to cooperate. They begin to form an agreement, but still decide to investigate independently.

During the investigation, they discover that during the Civil War, a large supply of gold meant to pay the soldiers was lost in the battlefield, presumably buried, so the zombie soldiers are likely attempting to locate the lost gold. With this new information, the groups decide to set a trap to capture the zombie. Luring the zombie sergeant with the map containing the treasure and pursuing the ghost, the groups successfully captured the ghost after he crashed his tractor into a fence.

The ghost was revealed to be Jebb, an antique store owner. While his brother, Ebb, wanted to use the lost gold to maintain the historic site, Jebb wanted to keep the gold for himself. So, he dug up various locations around the battlefield in search of the treasure, using a ghost disguise to keep others away from his operations and using a holographic projector to create the other zombies. After Jebb is handed over to authorities, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln is also revealed to be Muddlemore, who created the disguise to encourage the groups to get along.

Continuity[]

Production[]

In the early stages of working on the title card, Tracy Mark Lee did original line art and rough sketches of Mudsy and Boo, before being told to use Abraham Lincoln, to keep the former a surprise for older Hanna-Barbera fans.[1]

Notes/Trivia[]

Miscellaneous[]

Cultural references[]

  • The title is an allusion to the real-world Abraham Lincoln's House Divided Speech on June 16, 1858.
  • Muddlemore refers to the Burr-Hamilton duel.
  • Having fictional Abraham Lincoln promoted as the celebrity guest, hides the real guest star attraction, that this is a crossover with the cast of The Funky Phantom.
    • The cast of Hanna-Barbera's Speed Buggy also makes cameos in this episode.
  • When Fred suggests that they "head 'em off at the pass", Daphne replies with "I hate that cliché!" Slim Pickens and Harvey Korman had the same exchange in the 1974 Mel Brooks film Blazing Saddles.
  • While trying to work out how Muddlemore is faked, Velma mentions Pepper's Ghost Effect. This refers to a magic trick that dates from the 18th century, using lights and mirrors to create a ghost effect, or to transform one person into another[2].

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • None known.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • Even though this is supposed to be a continuation of The New Scooby-Doo Movies, Shaggy & Scooby are in hysterics at the idea of Speed Buggy being a talking car, despite having had an entire case together in the aforementioned series episode The Weird Winds of Winona.
  • How the statues became ghosts is unknown.

Quotes[]

Fred: We've got a van, with "Mystery Machine" painted right on the side.
Augie: Paint that yourself, did you?
Fred: I totally did... (catches on to the insult) Hey!

Ghost of Abraham Lincoln: A mystery solving team divided shall not stand. It breaks my heart to see such skirmishing.

April: We found this. Do you know what it is?
Velma: I know exactly what this is. And now this memory stick totally makes sense.
Mudsy: A memory stick? Is that like a broomstick but for brainy bits? I certainly could use a good sweeping, don'tcha know.

Fred: Hold the phone... The fake ghost of Abraham Lincoln has a point.

Fred: Since when does a ghost drive a tractor?
Augie: We did that bit already.
Fred: Oh. OK, sorry.

Jebb: And I would've gotten away with it, too, if it wasn't for you meddling kids--um--er--ten of you!
