Don Messick was an American voice actor, a veteran of Hanna-Barbera 's animated series. Roles other than Scooby-Doo , included Papa Smurf from The Smurfs , Astro from The Jetsons , Boo Boo and Ranger Smith from The Yogi Bear Show , and Dr. Quest from Jonny Quest .
During a recording session in 1996, he had a stroke and quit soon after.[citation needed ] The following year, he died of a second stroke, at 71. Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island was dedicated to him as it was the first official Scooby-Doo production without him as the voice of Scooby-Doo, and was succeeded by Scott Innes . Previously to that, the Johnny Bravo crossover episode Bravo Dooby-Doo , also had Hadley Kay as Scooby as Messick was too sick by then.
