Don Messick was an American voice actor, a veteran of Hanna-Barbera's animated series. Roles other than Scooby-Doo, included Papa Smurf from The Smurfs, Astro from The Jetsons, Boo Boo and Ranger Smith from The Yogi Bear Show, and Dr. Quest and Bandit from Jonny Quest.
During a recording session in 1996, he had a stroke and retired soon after.[citation needed] The following year, he died of a second stroke, at 71. Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island was dedicated to him as it was the first official Scooby-Doo production without him as the voice of Scooby-Doo, and was succeeded by Scott Innes. Previously to that, the Johnny Bravo crossover episode Bravo Dooby-Doo, also had Hadley Kay as Scooby as Messick was too sick by then.
