Diamonds Are a Ghoul's Best Friend is the seventh episode of the third season of What's New, Scooby-Doo?, and the thirty-fifth overall.

Premise[]

When the gang goes to Russia to watch the Moscow Invitational Hockey Tournament, they encounter a ghostly hockey player known as the Frozen Fiend.

Synopsis[]

Mystery Inc. travels to Russia to watch the Moscow Invitational Hockey Tournament, though they note the high security. Before the game, they meet the American team captain, Brett Hull, who reveals that an icy ghoul has stolen the tournament's trophy encrusted with the diamonds of Tsar Nicholas II. They also see three American fans calling themselves the Super Fans and figure skater Galina Korzhakov, though she is booed off the rink by hockey fans, prompting Daphne to stand up and scold the crowd for booing Galina. Shortly after the Finnish team scores a goal against the American team, the Super Fans exit just as the Frozen Fiend appears.

As the fans flee, Russian team member Nicolai accuses Hull of staging the attacks to cancel the event and avoid their loss. After escaping the monster, they follow Nicolai to Tsar Nicholas' statue at a museum, where they discover Nicolai is the tsar's descendant, so they suspect Nicolai stole the diamonds to return them to his ancestor. They split up to follow different suspects; Velma follows Korzhakov to a tailor shop, watching her order a sparkly dress, Fred and Daphne find light blue paint in the Super Fans' trailer, and Shaggy and Scooby watch Nicolai ice fishing at a frozen lake, though the Frozen Fiend attacks them. Hull appears and wards the monster away.

Reuniting with the rest of Mystery Inc., Fred decides to stop looking for evidence and catch the Frozen Fiend right away. Entering the rink disguised as the Finnish team, they play against the Swedish team to lure the monster into appearing. They then attempt to bind the monster with ropes, but it quickly frees itself and chases them off the rink and around the venue. After the monster somehow escapes through a very small window, Inspector Malpumpkin and his officers appear at the crime scene, finding the trophy with the diamonds removed. Finding Hull's uniform at the scene, Malpumpkin orders his officers to arrest Hull for the crime. Nicolai mocks him, leading Mystery Inc. to suspect he committed the crime to frame him.

Mystery Inc. returns to the rink to investigate further, finding both Nicolai and Korzhakov at the scene. However, the Frozen Fiend appears and attacks them on a Zamboni, though the vehicle suddenly brakes, forcing it to flee. With this, Velma finds enough evidence to arrest the culprit, so Shaggy lures Scooby onto the ice with Scooby Snacks, overcoming his fear of ice, which lures the monster into appearing. Fred and Daphne use a hose to spray the monster with water, which quickly freezes it in place. Velma uses a hockey stick to break the ice, revealing the culprit underneath.

The Frozen Fiend is revealed to be Korzhakov, who attempted to steal the diamonds. She froze the diamonds under the ice rink to hide them, then switched them with the fake diamonds on her dress to smuggle them out of the arena. She used inline skates to skate even on pavement, and skated on stilts to appear taller as the monster. After Velma realizes that Korzhakov still had the diamonds on her dress, Korzhakov suddenly runs away. Mystery Inc. finds her hiding in a matryoshka doll and hands her over to Malpumpkin, and they finally return to the rink to cheer for Velma, who is replacing an injured goalie on the American team.

Notes/trivia[]

  • Fred tries to shortcut Mystery Inc.'s traditional ghost-catching formula by trapping the villain before finding enough evidence first. Unfortunately, the trap fails.
  • Scooby is shown to have a fear of ice (pagophobia) because of an incident where the hotel ice maker lid slammed shut on his tail, freezing it.
  • Although this episode aired on March 3, 2005, it was actually produced in 2004 according to the end credits.
  • It would seem Fred's skills in speaking Russian are a bit better than speaking other languages, as despite its broken nature, his message of introduction was still understood by Inspector Malpumpkin, with no mistaken words.

Miscellaneous[]

  • Disguises: Mystery Inc. as Finnish hockey players.
  • Traps: Mystery Inc. forms a chain and attempts to capture the Frozen Fiend (failed); Mystery Inc. uses ropes to bind the Frozen Fiend (failed); Fred and Daphne douse the Frozen Fiend with water which freezes it in ice (succeeded).
  • Clues: Light blue paint and Brett Hull's hockey uniform.

Cultural references[]

  • The title of this episode is a parody of the song Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend, performed by Marilyn Monroe for the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.
  • Tsar Nicolai II, of which a statue is present in the episode, was the last emperor of Russia before his abdication.
  • Shaggy and Scooby enter a casket with Vladimir Lenin, the leader of the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution and the founder of the Soviet Union.
  • Also present in the hall of leaders are statues resembling Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev, and Mikhail Gorbachev, all leaders of the Soviet Union.
  • The ice resurfacer is called Zamboni after its creator, Frank J. Zamboni.

Animation mistakes and/or technical glitches[]

  • When a Finnish player scores a goal on the Swedish team, the Swedish goalkeeper's uniform is miscolored in white and blue, making him look like Finland's goalkeeper.
  • Shaggy's neck is fatter when he is carrying Scooby.

Inconsistencies/continuity errors and/or goofs/oddities[]

  • None known.
