Dark Diner of Route 66! is the twenty third episode of season 2 of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? and the forty-ninth episode overall.
Premise[]
Scooby and Shaggy meet up with their biker buddy, Axl Rose, on a tour of famous roadside diners along iconic Route 66, when a group of Mud Men steal the Mystery Machine and kidnap Fred, Daphne and Velma.
Synopsis[]
The gang are driving along Route 66, when some mud splats the Mystery Machine and the van crashes. They try to see where the mud came from, but instead run into a bunch of Mudmen, who steal the Mystery Machine. Fred, of course, is in despair about this act of carjacking, falling down on his knees and cursing the Mudmen for leaving the gang stranded on an empty open road.
The gang walk to the Sunnyside-Up Diner and see the friend that Shaggy and Scooby came to meet: none other than Axl Rose. They explain that they became friends over a piece of pie, and are self-proclaimed 'Pie Brothers'. They are looking for the best pie out there.
The gang head into the diner, ordering some pies and looking for clues. Velma and Daphne notice 3 miners sitting at a nearby table, which is strange since there isn't a mine around the area for miles.
Meanwhile, outside, the cook notices a muddy footprint. Just as he begins to inspect it, he is taken by a mudman.
Fred reports through phone that the Mystery Machine is missing, acting as if it is a person. The reciever hangs up, confused.
The waitress notices that some college kids haven't paid their bill. Carelessly, they walk to the exit. Axl stands up for the waitress, forcing them to pay and telling them to get out. One of the college kids warns that Axl will 'pay tommorow'.
Something catches on fire in the kitchen; the gang and the waitress come to check it. There are no clues to what started it. Suddenly, a mudman takes the janitor behind them. Superstitious, the waitress attempts to leave, but she too is taken by a mudman.
Velma reports that the mud from the mudmen isn't actually mud. Abruptly, Fred and Daphne are taken. Shaggy, Scooby, Axl and Velma run to the diner, but Velma looses her glasses and gets taken by the mudmen too.
Shaggy, Scooby and Axl discover a hole in one of the walls of the diner, covered up by a Vending Machine; they explore it and find a lost city in the middle of some caves. They try to look for the rest of the gang in the lost city, before they halt at a cliff blocking the way. They manage to swing to the other side with Axl's rope. They find some ancient paintings on a cavern wall, and Axl translates it. According to Axl, The Golden Sun God is guarding this lost city's treasure. Anyone who enters will be cursed.
Shaggy, Scooby and Axl find the skeleton of Zaragoza in the caves. He was a Spanish concquistador; the legend says that he and his men were attacked by a group of horrible mudmen after finding treasure in the same caves.
The mudmen interrupt the conversation, chasing the trio through the lost city. A Scooby-Dooby doors scene plays. Axl, Shaggy and Scooby disguise themselves as waiters and throw mud pies at the mudmen and run away.
They run into a set of ancient booby traps; Axl tells Shaggy and Scooby to be careful not to step on any octagons. Confused, Scooby steps on an octagon, releasing the traps. Thankfully, Axl carries Scooby through the traps as they get away from the mudmen.
In the next room, the rocky ceiling starts to close in on them. Axl carves a stone and jams the trap with it.
After getting out, they find the mudmen loading gold into the Mystery Machine. After hearing, muffled voices, they find Daphne, Fred and Velma, before getting into a chase with the mudmen who are getting away.
Axl, Shaggy and Scooby hop on their own motorcycles and catch up to the mudmen in the Mystery Machine. Scooby abandons his own bike, which crashes into the Mystery Machine. The mudmen end up crashing on a sidewalk, which results in more Mystery Machine damage.
The Mudmen are revealed to be the waitress, the cook and the janitor. They learned about the legend of Zaragoza 10 years ago and have been tunneling in search of the lost city of gold ever since. But when they found it, they realised it was way too much gold to carry by hand, so they stole the Mystery Machine, which was a perfect fit for the entrance of the lost city.
The "mud" of the mudmen was actually just pie filling. After the thieves are taken away and the gold is turned over to the tribal authorities, Axl reveals that his crew upgraded the Mystery Machine for Fred. They ride off into the distance.

Notes/trivia[]
- Shaggy and Scooby are “biking buddies” with Axl Rose.
- Daphne announces the celebrity guest.
- Fred mentions that the Mystery Machine was born in 1969, which is the year Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? premiered.
- This episode aired 41st in the United States, though the URL on the Boomerang streaming service lists it as episode 49.
- Rose prefers to work late wanting to get in at 11PM, but Bailey, concerned about his staff being too tired, countered with a compromise of 9PM.
- The director, Mike Milo, believed it would be easier to get Axl Rose since he had already played an animated version of himself in the New Looney Tunes episode "Armaggeddon Outta Here, Part 2." The plot of the episode came from Rose's interest in archaeology and motorcycles.
- Miloville is named after the director of the episode, Mike Milo.
- The cave of gold used in Velma's explanation is the same one used as the cave of King Soloman's treasure in The Lost Mines of Kilimanjaro!.
